Hi, couldn't see another thread about this.
So the first episode of Moon Knight, the new Marvel tv series was released today - what did everyone think?
I really enjoyed it. I live Egyptian mythology; thought Oscar Isaac was really good, loved the car chase, he does bumbling idiot very well.
New episodes every Wednesday.

We have just watched it. I'm a little confused at the moment but it has me hooked.

APurpleSquirrel · 30/03/2022 23:22

Oh I'm totally confused! Not read the comics, no idea of the origin story. Clearly there is some sort of split personality/two people in one body thing going on with added godly interference.
I found it engaging in a way some of the other series weren't in their first ep - Falcon & Winter Soldier, & even WandaVision, but that redeemed itself later.
Was a bit discombobulated by Issac talking with a English accent, so used to him in Star Wars.

I've just watched it, loved it. My ds has told me the basic story behind it. I think, if I remember rightly, Steven is 1 of 4 personalities. Marc being the mercenary, then moonlight (the dude in the white cloak thing) and the beaky God who has gone into his body. I think the back story is Marc was dying on the desert, beaky God went into his body to not only save him but to be free?!?

nipersvest · 01/04/2022 16:29

Also just watched it, really liking it so far, OI's acting very good.

BrinksmansEntry · 01/04/2022 20:10

I'm just watching episode 1 now. Co fused but entertained!

APurpleSquirrel · 01/04/2022 23:19

Just been reading an interview with OI talking about his English accent for the series & how he modelled it on British comedians like Russell Kane, Karl Pilkington & Russell Brand.

Placemarking. Will come join in when I've watched it. I know nothing about this character.

Malalaa · 01/04/2022 23:30

I lived it! No idea what's going on but very happy to see Ethan Hawke!

But Karl Pilkington was an inspiration for his accent? Has he got that right? Karl's from Manchester and Oscar definitely has a London accent in this.

APurpleSquirrel · 01/04/2022 23:54

Yep, watched this snippet of interview - definitely says Karl Pilkington, but maybe more for attitude than accent..,

Really enjoyed the first episode. Dark, confusing, fast paced and the car chase was something else!

When Ethan Hawke appeared, DH said "I didn't know Kevin Bacon was in this" 😆

Well it's batshit so far but I'll persevere.

His accent reminds me of Stephen Mangan in Dirk Gently.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/04/2022 23:02

Thoughts on ep2?

I'm still not clear on who's body it is? Mark's or Steven's. I think Mark, but it does seem slightly bizarre. Why would Steven never see Mark again after this mission/debt is finished? Will one of them cease to exist?

Not as pacey an episode as last week, but I guess we need more explanation/exposition.

Ethan Hawke's character is clearly in the crazy as a bag of cats category; but believes his actions justify the means. Echoes of Thanos?

The accent is not good! But I also thought, oh its someone doing a Kevin Bacon, so I reckon your DH was on to something! I like it so far.

BrinksmansEntry · 08/04/2022 13:18

I watched episode 2 and am confused... Mark said he was an avatar? So does that mean the body belongs to Steven and he is hosting Mark? But how did the woman recognise Mark if he didn't... own the body?

Urgh. I'm enjoying it but don't quite understand it. I'm just going to surrender to the storyline and hope it makes sense in the end.

It is less bleak than the Falcon & Winter Soldier series. But not as much fun as Wandavision (yet) or Hawkeye. I am really enjoying all these series from Marvel!

NurseButtercup · 09/04/2022 14:53

I'm still a bit puzzled about the storyline, but I will watch every episode just to see Oscar Isaac.

Strugglingtodomybest · 11/04/2022 14:45

I watched the first two episodes last night. I really enjoyed the storyline, I think it is really interesting that he has dissociative identity disorder.

However, I'm finding his Britishness very off-putting. I thought it was his accent that was annoying me at first, but although it's not perfect, it's not that. I think it's the script, he comes out with phrases that just don't sound right. I can't remember any now of course, but I kept thinking, someone like him just wouldn't say something like that.

Did anyone else notice it, or is it a symptom of my overall pedantic-ness when it comes to language?!

APurpleSquirrel · 11/04/2022 16:19

@Strugglingtodomybest from what I read in the interview me I think that's part of it, part of the give away to a UK audience at least, that Steven isn't 'real' so to speak? For the same reason his accent isn't quite right, it jumps about & there are too many 'sayings' that a true Brit wouldn't say? That's my thoughts anyway.

OP posts:
Figmentofimagination · 11/04/2022 21:03

That would make sense about emphasising Steven not being real. I read up on the moon knight comics. Marc was the real person, and Steven (as well as another person) were his extra identities/personalities.
Also, has anyone found it weird that Steven never speaks to his mother. It's always a message on her answerphone. Another thing that could point to Steven not being real as mum is also not real.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/04/2022 12:10

@APurpleSquirrel that makes sense! They've made it seem at first like Steven is real and Marc is an identity, so that it will be a twist when we discover it's the other way round.

@Figmentofimagination I hadn't thought about him not actually speaking to his mum, but that makes sense too!

APurpleSquirrel · 12/04/2022 14:34

Yes we picked up on the messages to his mum - never actually talking to her.

Watched the new episode tonight - starting to get more of the story.
Obligatory reason why the gods didn't intervene in Thanos (convenient).
Tbh the other gods seem a bit ... uninvested? Why did they believe Arthur (EH)? Why was there no further investigation?
Layla is pretty kickass.
And was nice to see that Steven was actually really useful this time.
Clearly there is also a third personality we haven't met too.

OP posts:
Figmentofimagination · 13/04/2022 22:21

From what I've read there is a 3rd personality. Can't remember the name though.

Something I noticed whilst watching it tonight was that during the end credits, an image of Marc appears, but his face splits into 3, which I think was hinting from the beginning of the 3rd personality, so the people who read the comics would notice this but not the newer marvel fans.

But I'm totally confused by Arthur Harrow's speech when Khonshu has been imprisoned. He talks about doing it for Knonshu but hates Knonshu and what Khonshu did to him. I'm struggling to understand his motives. Is he bad? Is he doing this for the greater good?

And I really don't like hearing the crunch of the glass in his shoes. Makes me feel sick.
