If anyone needs another reason to avoid online dating, this takes it to another level! It's hard to believe this guy got away with it for so long.

I don't think investing in property gives the same thrill as pretending to be a billionaire diamond mogul

bananaleafy · 06/02/2022 12:03

Why did the bodyguard go out partying with him and getting drunk if he was always in danger?

Who were his enemies and how comes they were able to track the bank accounts of him and everyone employed by his company?

His stories are very far fetched. Surprised alarm bell's didn't ring

TrippinEdBalls · 06/02/2022 12:34

I think even if he was prosecuted, it would be hard for the women to get their money back because they willingly took out the loans in their own names. It's not the bank's problem if they were taken in by a professional con artist.

I was really shocked by the total lack of due diligence done by the banks. She took out nine big loans in a few weeks, based off one fake payslip that showed money that had never actually entered her bank account. Surely the credit check should have set off huge alarms, especially by loan 9 (I'm sure the credit check shows if you've recently made other applications)? And it was a bit worrying how easily he was flying around on fake documents!

TrippinEdBalls · 06/02/2022 12:37

Hopefully it does make people think and be careful.

I was slightly worried about the opposite - that people could think it looked easy and pretty consequence-free to scam people like this!

VladmirsPoutine · 06/02/2022 12:40

The women in question have now set up a Go Fund Me in an attempt to raise 600k Confused

Newrunner29 · 06/02/2022 12:53

I found the wowan with child the most fascinating, she was one of 3 first victims who had child with him and then helped him in further cons !

LemonSwan · 06/02/2022 12:54

I always hear about these types of love scams and think what idiots!

But this one I can see why it worked. And I say that because I have sent money to friends in tricky situations before. On one occasion I did even ring the bank to get an overdraft increase to do it - poor chap was being held in a croatian police station cell illegally with no charge and being bribed for release. We was black and it was a racist thing. He was very grateful and did pay the money back straight away when out.

So I can see how when a friend is in danger you would help out.

And yes she was a complete cunt!

Gilda152 · 06/02/2022 12:57

I think if you are attracted to money you stand a very good chance of being scammed - these women saw him as an equivalent 'get rich quick' scheme of sorts and ,as would likely happen, they got burned.

Newrunner29 · 06/02/2022 12:58

So just looked for gofundme not to give money just to have nosey and there are few! The main woman who says london, uk and then same woman on another with US location im guessing a scam! How ironic!

That's the old saying, isn't it - 'you can't cheat an honest man'? And the first woman committed fraud herself for him (and in a much more straightforwardly, clear cut and prosecutable case of fraud than him) - which of course got her stuck even deeper into the mess because it made it harder for her to seek help.
isthismylifenow · 06/02/2022 13:08

One thing I didn't understand is that they were speaking in dollar currency, the Norwegian girl gave him $250k. Do you think this was edited for the documentary as surely it would have been in pounds or euros.?

HollowTalk · 06/02/2022 13:14

Apparently there have been loads of fake campaigns on GoFundMe to raise money for these women - I wonder how many were set up by the guy in question?

icelollycraving · 06/02/2022 13:17

I think when I was young, I probably would have fallen for this. I fell for other loads of old shit tbh.

WonderfulYou · 06/02/2022 13:25

I agree.

I haven’t watched it as I struggle to have sympathy for people who fall for these catfish.

I remember watching a few and the women had never even met these men but were sending them thousands.

This sounds even worse as the women saw him as a meal ticket and was only after his money - sort of ironic that they lost money from it.

CreativeCharlie · 06/02/2022 13:29

I watched this last night, bloody hell!

We can see it as an obvious scam because it's condensed down into and hour and a bit but with these women it would have been planned with timings that have proved to work already, he's practiced it well. Not every woman would fall for it but I can see why someone with a trusting nature might.

This doesn't happen just with billionaire (fake) status, women are conned by men like this regularly, we just don't hear so much about it.

Ghastlyghoul · 06/02/2022 13:30

LemonSwan. How long had you known the chap who was stuck in a Croatian police cell though? I’d help friends out if they were in that situation too but someone youve only known a month or two? I’d like (hope) to think I’d be more on my guard.

Ghastlyghoul · 06/02/2022 13:33

The other thing I can’t get my head round was how Simon shortly after meeting these women would be whatsapping google map details and expecting them to drop every and go meet him wherever - might be nearby or it might be in another country. Why didn’t they get pissed off with this sort of demand. A lot of his messages read or sound like orders - come here, get this, do that etc. Awful.

bananaleafy · 06/02/2022 13:34

Cecille had known him for ONE MONTH when he asked for money

🥺

busyeatingbiscuits · 06/02/2022 13:38

It was an extremely slick scam, and con artists know exactly who to target - they're looking for a vulnerability.

I also wanted to know more about the victim-turned-accomplice!

LemonSwan · 06/02/2022 13:40

@Ghastlyghoul

Yes absolutely I had known him years. The first women was more silly with a month, but he played the long game with the second and it seemed to be years of groundwork and a whole summer travelling together before he asked for the money. She caught on pretty quick though.

Isnt that just crazy, people watch this then go pay money into something that they have no idea is actually real thing so literally being conned same as women they are watching! 🤯
UserBot9to5 · 06/02/2022 15:04

watching this now, I cannot believe the norwegian cecile took out several loans for him (after he'd maxed out her credit card). I know his name came up when she googled him but she just didn't have the money!

UserBot9to5 · 06/02/2022 15:18

Oh that poor Cecile. My heart breaks for her.
