Wow. I've never filled a thread before!

SMJ's actions in this episode are very incongruous:

  • being superstitious about the raven
  • seeking guidance from a medium
  • wanting to know when she is going to die

Her whole life is based around believing that God is in control and that she is subject to God's will.

Nevermindful · 06/02/2022 22:04

I think Matthew’s interest in Clover was believable, his wife did die giving birth to his son, he’s going to get worried about a young girl in a filthy squat.

The squatters did seem shoehorned in to give a bit of 60s colour. The social distancing pissed me off again. Patrick and his measles saviour pissed me off to. Was that storyline really just there so Lucille could realise she was sad? And as for the clairvoyant…

Looks like we are getting some Timothy drama next week.

Nevermindful · 06/02/2022 22:05

Also surely that was a crow and not a raven? Ravens a MASSIVE.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/02/2022 22:08

@Samcro I also thought that! Or one of the twins in an earlier series who had identical twins and gave one to her sister.

I find it inconceivable that Sr Julienne would not think that Lucille would struggle with midwifery. She's always the most switched on of all of them.

The paraffin thing was weird, there were at least two shots of the word on the side of the cans, so it was obvious something was going to happen - and then it didn't.

IsadoraQuagmire · 06/02/2022 22:21

It certainly looked like a crow to me. And what a fuss they all made about a little bird, it was ridiculous.
SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 06/02/2022 22:24

It's like they've spliced a whole tonne of footage together and it doesn't really make sense.

viques · 06/02/2022 22:25

Has Sister J not clocked that she currently has two other midwives with children? And that one of them is married.

Good to see that the Good Dr is familiar with a tea towel. What a renaissance man he is.

viques · 06/02/2022 22:29

@Toddlerteaplease

Did I miss the whole storyline about the clairvoyants son? Who was he and where had he been?
Buckingham apparently. Though how Sister MJ tracked him down is a mystery known only to God and directory enquiries.
LaBelleSauvage123 · 06/02/2022 22:31

The funniest thing was them saying goodbye to Timothy at the beginning - six feet apart, little wave, bye then. And did anyone notice the socially distanced teddy bears in the final Turner scene?

DH and I reckon clairvoyant woman was hiding her face behind half a curtain so that we didn’t realise she had a previous incarnation as a back street abortionist.

Puffalicious · 06/02/2022 22:39

God, it was dire tonight. I can't decide who annoys me most: the Saintly Turners (esp Dr himself); dottery, Bible quoting Sister MJ; no personality/ one dimensional Cyril and Lucille; patronising, bossy Councillor woman; or wooden actress, new Irish midwife.

I only persevere as my late mam loved this show and it reminds me of her (she'd read the books years before.).

viques · 06/02/2022 22:47

@OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea

Yes yes. Clover in labour on her own, big fire, she gets forgotten. I'm going for Matthew rescuing her rather than Dr T. She will of course recognise the error of her ways and quit the squatter life.
That is the plot as it should have been.

Then Matthew offers her a job , either in his office ( someone needs to be there, if only to answer the phone because he sure ain’t, I think the scriptwriters have forgotten that in the sixties people used phones to communicate, no texts, no e Mail, no mobiles, no fax machines, no pagers, just proper phones that stayed in one place and needed someone to answer them and write down messages on bits of paper headed while you were out.....) or as an au pair to the neglected child who apart from a trip to the park hasn’t been seen for months.

I felt rhe same last week with Nurse Crane's reaction to the money - it feels like they had different storylines planned, filmed some scenes and then the SD rules changed or they just realised that the ideas weren't possible and so they had to hastily rewrite them to take a different direction, but couldn't reshoot the scenes that had already been filmed so they just had to try and make it all fit and it came out as a jumbled mess
toomuchlaundry · 06/02/2022 22:50

Is it possible the warehouse may go up in flames next week?

Hellosunshiner · 06/02/2022 22:52

It seemed certain there'd be a tragedy with the paraffin. Maybe another time, as they definitely made a point about it, what with it being sold in the newsagents and also "across the road'?

Not sure where Matthew would have found "greaseproof paper" in a derelict warehouse squat!

SMJ very sprightly and managing to get herself around and about pretty well these days unlike previous episodes. I also find her character much more bearable in its current form and some of her words of wisdom are really meaningful and succinct.

All in all, a good solid episode tonight I thought.

EngimaticDisappearance · 06/02/2022 22:55

Last week was an incredible heatwave and all the ice cream melted. Today temperatures are dipping below freezing.

Dr Mansplain knows more about measles than the actual measles committee.

Sister MJ has the world's only case of dementia remission.

Matthew becomes a main character because he has white teeth and we need more men's opinions.

The Turners have tears in their eyes watching their children play with gender appropriate toys. Roll credits.

Wizzbangfizz · 06/02/2022 23:01

Lucille and Cyril certainly don't seem happy to me - loss aside. Agree this series is not good, shoehorning storylines in and the social distancing is beyond ridiculous.

LazySaturday · 06/02/2022 23:01

Good point about the weather, what season are we supposed to be in now?
I loved SMJ having a starring role tonight but she is surprisingly lucid compared to earlier seasons.
Did they write this series then have to quickly adapt it to fit Covid regulations and the Trixie and Phyllis actors suddenly needing to be written out? It all feels quite odd and scrappy like a big build up to something then "oh never mind, everybody was fine actually..." type thing.
I am really struggling with Lucille. I dislike her character intensely for some reason but did think they were all hugely insensitive.

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/02/2022 23:04

The hippy clothes, hair and make up were all wrong!

And where did they get the electricity for the record players for the music?

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/02/2022 23:06

AND Nurse Crane was only going to be away for a week!

cheapskatemum · 06/02/2022 23:06

The backstreet abortionist (Valerie's Nan?) was played by the actor who played Cora in Eastenders.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 06/02/2022 23:13

The fabulous Ann Mitchell.

Forever Dolly to me 🙂

TrashyPanda · 06/02/2022 23:16

Oh dear, Matthews acting gets worse with every episode.
He really is dire. If Charlie ever leaves Casualty he would slip into his shoes perfectly.
And why was he wearing a three piece suit and an overcoat when just last week it was high summer?
Still, at least the hippies showed just how square he is.

Dr Turner and his God Complex. He kept saying “we need to do X, Y and Z” when what he actually meant was all the little women had to do the actual work, why he sat back and looked smug. Still, at least we know the other GPS in the area can’t stand him either.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/02/2022 23:36

There was definitely supposed to be a fire - when he switched the lamp on right at the end of the delivery there was a massive close up on the battery box sparking!!!
