@BlingLoving

Is it supposed to be a piss take? Because I assumed it was, but every single trailer I've seen does not look like a piss take. If it IS a pisstake, I'd like to watch it, because that bloody book annoyed me so much that I didn't even bother finishing it - just skipped to the last chapter to confirm I knew who the baddie was. I absolutely hated it. I do love the actress but even something slightly serious would irritate me.
It is a spoof but as others have said, the plot really isn't that much more ridiculous or implausible than 'serious' thrillers of the type it is sending up.
sociallydistained · 31/01/2022 13:00

I just got to the flashback of her in early labour for 3 months in a hospital bed painting 😂 It made me howl as I am currently four days overdue and it feels like I've been in early labour for 3 months too 🙈

Pinkflask · 31/01/2022 14:03

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches - my DP says he thinks it was a straight script which they realised was a bit plodding and they've added the spoof bits on afterwards! At least you don't feel like they're insulting you with the stupidness of the plot. It's bearable when it's meant to be kind of funny.

Amandasummers · 31/01/2022 14:19

@the80sweregreat I think you are talking about “the woman in the window” the general plot line is mainly based on that I’m sure! I didn’t manage to watch the Netflix adaption but I read the book!

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:22

The bread text was funny as were the soft focus sex scenes too !

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:25

The woman in the window. ! Oh yes.
It was with Amy Adams and not Nicole Kidman
Same sort of thing as this (but not funny)
I loved her ' oh, I don't drink wine anymore , but I'll have a vodka ' !!

HangoverSquare · 31/01/2022 14:26

The 'hot' neighbour is so weasely looking. I think the casting bods could have done a bit better there.

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:35

I Didn't like any of the men in this !

ScrambledSmegs · 31/01/2022 14:38

@the80sweregreat

Spoiler alert ....

I think it is meant to be funny , as if you would leave your daughter in the cell with a criminal! Plus they were only outside the room too !! As if it's just black humour there , but I can see why it would upset people.
I watched a thriller film ( a serious one ) where the woman had agoraphobia and couldn't go out and was watching her neighbours and also had a therapist on speed dial etc. She was hallucinating some things too , might have been Nicole Kidman in it or someone like that ?
Cant recall the films name. It was very similar to this.
It is a mash up of every type of thriller and book in this kind of genre.
I guess you either like spoofs or you don't and this one is pretty well done I thought , but then I watch and read a lot of these type of things.

It was Sigourney Weaver in Copycat. It got really good reviews but I honestly didn't think it was that great. SW was fab but Holly Hunter annoyed the hell out of me and the plot was predictable.
ScrambledSmegs · 31/01/2022 14:39

Ooh unless it was Amy Adams in that recent thing too? The window thing.

God there's been so many.

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:42

It was a bit more believable than : no particular order ;
' stay close ' Netflix , Jimmy Nesbit.
'Tell me lies' ( or whatever the one was in Australia with Charlie brooks , aka Janine Butcher from Eastenders , was called ?)

The one with Jill Halfpenny and a missing son. Channel five last year
The sister ( Russell Tovey and Bertie Cavell)
The pact ( more big houses )
The one with someone out of Corrie who had an abusive husband and that dragged on for weeks.
The tourist , although I liked that a lot
Jamie Dornan would have played a nice neighbour to have a fantasy about ..
I watch some rubbish eh?

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:44

Not seen Copycat.
I did watch a horror film with Renee Zellweger called ' case 39 ' and that wasn't too bad
It was the child element that reminded me of this a bit.

HangoverSquare · 31/01/2022 14:45

Oh I remember Copycat. Every second film in the 90s was about a serial killer! Grin

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:49

On the 00s it was amnesia stories , which this did touch on a bit too.
Nicola Kidman and Colin Firth had a film out where she lost her memory. Each day was Groundhog Day for her , also a book too?
In the ' girl on the train ' she had amnesia?
The tourist was the same too , great plot line.

HangoverSquare · 31/01/2022 14:50

Memento was a great amnesia film

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 14:55

Always lovely big houses with basements too (for the one with amnesia to live in. )

I know of one person who has a basement who lives in London, but I've never met anyone else who has this as standard.
The painting in the hospital bed made me laugh too !!

IcedPurple · 31/01/2022 16:48

@HangoverSquare

The 'hot' neighbour is so weasely looking. I think the casting bods could have done a bit better there.
I agree. He's obviously decent looking but given that his alleged hunkiness was constantly referred to, he wasn't all that.
BrimfulOfBaba · 31/01/2022 17:38

I don't think they committed hard enough to it being a spoof...the odd line was and spoofy but it was so sparse it didn't fit.

kindlyensure · 31/01/2022 18:20

I'm skimming through this thread coz I actually haven't seen it all yet so am trying to avoid too much detail BUT I am also really enjoying it.

I have a VERY low tolerance of the Girl in the Window on the Train type books/films - really loathe them tbh - but this is v entertaining.

I like that it is not trying to be laugh out loud funny but just nicely placed little gags while still telling a (fairly ridiculous but still decently plotted) story.

It's a very easy and good-looking watch.

I have read some really savage reviews and I'm usually in agreement with critics but on this one I think they're wrong. So far I think this series is pitched pretty perfectly.

I can only manage a couple of episodes however before I start feeling a bit tipsy and slightly headachey. Red wine does that to me though.

sociallydistained · 31/01/2022 18:35

@kindlyensure I agree I think the pitch is just right and perfect for me. I've been on Twitter and there's a divide between people getting it and people not... someone said they only realised at the last episode it wasn't serious! So many things I laughed out loud at that were quite subtle. I imagine there's quite a few blink and you'll miss it moments. I think when a parody has many people fooled, it's just right!

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 20:56

The books she was reading were funny
' the woman across the lane '
' the girl on a cruise'
😂

Inkanta · 31/01/2022 21:06

Ha haa Smile yes, really enjoyed this and realizing that I do like a spoof. Done in a subtle way. Very good!! And a good thriller.

Yes noticed the book titles. Missed the gravestone words. Liked her repeating the same phrase that she felt she'd been knocked down by a .....Grin

Inkanta · 31/01/2022 21:09

Pouring the wine to the brim Wine Grin

kindlyensure · 31/01/2022 21:09

Also loling at her saying 'Bingo!' every time she opens a drawer. Also the ventriloquist's dummy.

I think it works for me because these 'psychological' genre stories are usually so ridiculous and cliched that they irritate me, whereas this is meant to be ridiculous and cliched so I can just enjoy it.

I am also really appreciating the insta interiors - and landscaped exteriors. Nicely observed.
