Anyone watched the first episode ? The US Downton Abbey set in New York in 1882.

Everyone keeps calling it the "US Downton" I loved it. I think possibly even more than Downton.

I would if it really was like that then in New York ie Old Money - v - New Money and the snobbery that came with that

I had a little cry over what happened with the footman Jack... yes he's got money now but that was his family... 😩. I was interested to learn that the actress who plays Lady Sarah is the real life partner of the actor who plays Oscar - and they've been together since Uni!

I cried too. Lovely scenes 🥰

I just hope he looks after it. I wonder if he will invest in the railways? I hope he takes good financial advice

BasiliskStare · 29/07/2025 02:54

I just loved - Are you unwell. Throughout the series I wasn't terribly keen on Bertha but seeing her daughter stand up for herself I found myself rooting for Bertha . The Gladys / Duke's sister plot I think is fabulous & I hope we see more.

Umanresources · 29/07/2025 02:56

Oh hooray. It's been commissioned for a fourth series.

I loved Gladys speaking up at the dinner table when Lady Sarah was telling the ladies to leave the table. 😄
I do hope we get to see more of her in the future.

Yes, the ending! I literally gasped and put my hand over my mouth 😱

Yes, I wasn’t expecting that …..on par with an event that happened in the Forsyth Saga..

MissMarpleRocks · 29/07/2025 06:51

Poor Oscar. Destined to not be happy. He seems so much sadder this season.

MotherofGorgons · 29/07/2025 11:39

Am only interested in the sarcastic alpha older women: Bertha, Agnes, Caroline Astor, Lady Sarah, and Mrs Kirkland.

Marian and Ada irritate me no end with their simpering, mimsy ways and Cynthia Nixon's completely changed voice..I should like Peggy but find her tedious too for some reason, probably because she seems to lack any sense of humour or wit.

Thought it was rather too pat the way Lady Sarah was put in her place. IRL Hector would have taken some time to fall in line with Gladys given how under Sarah's thumb he was.

I actually thought Larry Russell would be killed in Arizona. Also found it unlikely that Marian would drop him without giving him a chance to explain, given all the men went to the whorehouse. Surely that was acceptable for men back in the day.

I guess Mr Russell loses all his money and Bertha has to come to terms with being poor.

SenecaFallsRedux · 29/07/2025 13:23

I disagree. In those days, it wasn't just a moral issue; but a very serious health one as well. I remember my grandmother telling me about an older relative of hers who broke off an engagement because her fiance visited "women of the night."

vjg13 · 29/07/2025 13:34

Maybe Larry will be called on to bail out the family with his share of the clock money?

Netaporter · 29/07/2025 13:50

Larry is about to save the day by not doing what his Father instructed him to do. He has found that the mines are valuable in Copper (George told him that the mines were worthless and to ignore the metallurgist report)...valuable enough to save the day.

It wouldn't be a Julian Fellowes script unless it all works out ok in the end now would it?

I was so keen on the Gladys storyline that I wasn't paying enough attention to the Morenci one. Would you mind summing it up for me? Why has Larry gone there, and what's this with the mines? Clearly it is going to be important.

No problem.

George instructed Larry to go and get the land bought. The land included ‘worthless’ mines . Larry asked what was supposed to be in the mines. George said the metallurgical report confirmed nothing and they were worthless. Larry was instructed by George to buy the mines valued as such. Larry was obviously curious as to why the mines existed and instructed another metallurgist to provide another report which showed the presence of a rich seam of copper that could supply that metal pretty much ad infinitum. The metallurgist told Larry to not pay massively under the market rate or even the market rate for an empty mine but to pay a fair price to avoid issues further down the line. However only Larry and the metallurgist know about the find. George does not know that this could save his bacon… so I expect it’ll all go to the brink until Larry gets back and yay! Saves the day.

Karmaisagod · 29/07/2025 19:52

Thank you. I have full confidence in Julian Fellowes trying everything up in a nice bow at the end.

Smurfmurf · 30/07/2025 18:47

Can anyone help? I have watched episode 1 again and went to watch episode 2 (have been away) and it’s not recorded. I don’t want to scroll back and read any spoilers but can anyone tell me what happened in episode 2. Ep 1 was just when Miss Scott was unwell and the Van Ryan doctor wouldn’t treat her and Gladys had a fight with Bertha and it looked like she ran away.

Have been binging the whole 3 seasons and just made it to end. I did not see that coming.

S3 Ep 7 of 8

spoilers Don't read on if you don't want to know...

We are of course heartened by the fact that this is Julian Fellowes. If we ignore his unwanted Matthew Crawley demise, he. usually keeps his main characters. I think the bullet misses, but the gunman is caught, only to find it is Clay behind the assassination attempt.

Or... if he is going down the Crawley route, I thin that the bullet kills Larry instead because he defends his Father - which means Marian remains a spinster having never reconciled with him and Bertha left knowing that her last words with her son were cross...

Next weeks finale should be a corker I reckon.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/08/2025 16:41

Blimey!!! What an episode.
Roll on next week.

Anyone else loving Hector ❤️❤️

Yes and I’m rooting for them. But nervous that JF follows Consuelo’s story closely and it ends badly.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/08/2025 17:13

Same! I actually hope not. I want Gladys happy and Bertha to be proved right 😁

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/08/2025 18:21

I think Hector always seemed like he was going to be lovely. I hope they fill that huge mansion with lots of babies.
shocking ending and I do think the Larry theory may be correct. Especially after the spinster conversation. I hope it's not though.

plus really don't want to be deprived of a ball at the end of the season!

EachandEveryone · 04/08/2025 18:45

as it was strongly suggested about Oscar being gay how does his life look for him now? Was it illegal in those times?

what about Nathan Lane do we know his sexuality? Is it ok for him because he’s such a bitchy queen? I mean he could have a wife and I’ve missed it?

HerdMentality · 04/08/2025 18:53

There is a trailer for next week that provides clues…
