Anyone watched the first episode ? The US Downton Abbey set in New York in 1882.

Everyone keeps calling it the "US Downton" I loved it. I think possibly even more than Downton.

I would if it really was like that then in New York ie Old Money - v - New Money and the snobbery that came with that

In the 'Gladys in the UK' plot line I seem to remember before the show premiered that Fellowes hinted at a minor 'crossover' with a Downton character or characters. GA season 3 takes place in 1884. According to the DA timeline, Cora came over in 1888 and married Robert soon thereafter. So it would be easy enough to have a younger 'pre-Cora' Robert or Rosalind appear using younger actors. It may even be used to put the idea of an American 'Dollar Princess' in Robert's mind. I think it'd be impossible to cast a younger Violet. The late Dame Maggie Smith's portrayal of Violet is just too 'one of a kind' to cast another 'appropriately aged' actress.

I also think that George is going to 'default' on the dowry. Wonder if that will result in Gladys being 'returned to sender' to get the money.

The mid season clip indicated it was hector’s sister’s idea. She’s a known actress so I think they’ll use her for a few stories. I’d like a DA crossover. Poor Gladys.

I really hope Jack buys himself a nice property soon before the vultures start circling. Would he still beable to have a job if he lived out? I suppose he may marry up now?

Why? That I said she was interesting? Mrs M is a very interesting character IMO and has stoically enduring 1000’s of critical column inches about her background, whether or not the family was/is ‘good enough’ to be marriage material for the Royal family, her former job, her company and of course the antics of her brother. There are many similarities to the storylines for Bertha in the Gilded Age..

Poor Gladys. I thought the Duke will let her go at the altar. Does anyone think she may start to like him?

The Gladys storyline is based on Consuelo Vanderbilt who married the Duke of Marlborough in 1895. I thought the wedding would go ahead to move the show's storyline on, I'm also wondering about a spin off set in the U.K.? The actor playing the Duke's sister is very accomplished.
Also I loved Merritt Wever as Bertha's sister, I expect she will keep making appearances.

If they follow the Consuelo storyline, Gladys will end up having an affair and divorcing the Duke.

I love Merrit Wever! So good in everything she does. Hattie Morahan as Lady Sarah is great casting, she was fab as Jane in outnumbered. She’s also engaged to Blake Ritson IRL who plays Oscar VR.

Me and DH are really enjoying this. We have differing views on Bertha and her ambitions; DH thinks she is appalling and can’t wait to see her get her comeuppance, and he felt quite upset for Gladys (he’s a bit of a softy). I’m hoping that her story doesn’t follow that of Consuelo and that she and the Duke are actually happy. It will be interesting to see how this progresses.
