Anyone watched the first episode ? The US Downton Abbey set in New York in 1882.

Everyone keeps calling it the "US Downton" I loved it. I think possibly even more than Downton.

I would if it really was like that then in New York ie Old Money - v - New Money and the snobbery that came with that

I wonder if she will go to the UK? I hope Jack doesn’t start gambling or anything. Loved the episode.

The previews show Bertha in the UK. It appears that we might have a Bertha-Lady Sarah power struggle. I suspect the matter of Gladys's money that George insisted she have separately from the Duke's might play a role. Let's hope so.

In the US on HBO, after each episode there are previews for the next episode. I don't know if these are available in the UK, but Bertha is crossing the pond, y'all.

Brilliant episode.

I’m so here for a Bertha/lady Sarah stand-off 👏 I absolutely love Carrie Coon as an actress in this. Originally, Bertha was supposed to be played by Amanda Peet who is also a great actress, but I do think that Carrie coon has a marvellous air of haughtiness about her. Completely different to the role she played in the white Lotus. If you follow the show on Instagram, there are some great shots of Bertha eating chocolate cake whilst half wearing the wedding outfit.

I love her rl husband as well. Brilliant actor.

Corker of an episode! Bring on Bertha and Sarah. Come on Gladys!

I'd love to see a Bertha/Lady Sarah power struggle but with Gladys suddenly coming into her own and shutting them BOTH down. Then declaring "This is the way it will be in MY castle!"

George Russel is feeling the pressure. I am confident they will ride it out.

I’m confident too.
I think George’s business will get perilously close to collapse and Bertha will stick by him even though they’re about to be poor. This will make George remember how much he loves her. They will reconcile just in time for George’s business to miraculously recover - leaving them richer than ever.
Cant wait for the Bertha/Sarah showdown and really hope that Gladys learns to stand up for herself - she needs to remember who her mother is!

Such a good episode, with loads packed in. I'm enjoying the gossip in the newspapers. Will they find out who is telling their secrets? What a nasty piece of work the Duke's sister is. I hope Gladys turns the table on her. Bertha will surely sort her out.
I hope Agnes will find out about the medium before Ada gets taken for a ride. It's very tense. Surely Jack won't be able to carry on working once he has his clock fortune.

Rhubarb01 · 23/07/2025 16:40

I"ve spent most of this series so far really disliking Bertha but I couldn't help thinking how true George's words were when he declared that Bertha caused the problems and she should sort them out. There's no better woman than Bertha to take on the snobbery of Lady Sarah and at least she will be entirely in Gladys's corner this time. It's obvious the Duke is under the thumb of his older sister. Without her overbearing presence, I do think he and Gladys have a chance of being happy. He does seem to be a nice man at heart and it's in his interests to keep Gladys happy. Looking forward to the showdown next week.

Anyone else this Hector and Sarah’s relationship is a bit odd? He seems to be completely dominated by her.

Yes, it's a little bit 'ooky'. Not in an incest sort of way, but I wonder if they lost their parents when he was quite young and she became a controlling 'mother figure'. Since it appears that she'll never marry, she needs to keep him under her control. She has no intention of being the 'spinster sister' at the beck and call of her sister in law.

NeedWineNow · 23/07/2025 22:29

Loved this episode. Bertha really went up in DH''s estimation when she was supportive of Mrs Fane in Newport. Looking forward to her power struggle with Lady Sarah on her daughter's behalf. I'm hoping Gladys has inherited some of her mother's strong will and will stand her ground with regard to her maid.

Talking of maids, I'm suspecting Bertha"s maid as the mole.

Yes she’s probably the older and more competent sibling, the girl who had to grow to be a resourceful woman and be the boy who never had to grow up at all (although he seems sweet enough to Gladys, in the circumstances).

MissMarpleRocks · 23/07/2025 23:16

Yes that’s it. A mother figure. She told him off as if he was a little boy.

Netaporter · 28/07/2025 08:23
