I think I'm the only CTM viewer who doesn't and never has liked Phyllis.

Hmmm, well Iike Phyllis.

As for Reggie and the Buckles - can't stand them! Well, Fred is ok but Violet and Reggie... hate them! So boring.

ZZGirl · 26/12/2021 22:57

I loved it, my favourite Xmas special of theirs so far

LaBelleSauvage123 · 26/12/2021 23:06

I thought it was one of the better Christmas specials. Didn’t take itself too seriously and had a healthy dollop of humour amidst the drama. The one set in Africa a few years ago was truly dire.

OneMorePieceofCheese · 26/12/2021 23:09

Did they replace Angela (one of the smug YAY kids)?

Could have sworn she used to be blonde.

Jeffjefftyjeff · 26/12/2021 23:16

I’m sure I remember actresses saying in an interview previously that the Christmas specials are filmed in the height of summer. So they have to pretend to be chilly in scarves and big coats while it’s 30 degrees. If that’s true for this year then the social distancing might just be because they were following the rules at the time.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 27/12/2021 00:03

I found it really moving as my (adopted) DD was a heroin addicted baby. Her foster cater used to talk about the high pitched cry. She was abandoned by her birth mother immediately after birth and was looked after by the nurses at the hospital for the first five days of her life before being transferred to the care of her foster family. She was given her name by the nurses.

Clawdy · 27/12/2021 08:15

How is she now, AngelsWithSilverWings?

Samcro · 27/12/2021 08:45

i enjoyed it. do find L&C cloying though. no one is that nice all the time.

Gatehouse77 · 27/12/2021 14:50

I agree it’s gone downhill. Personally, I find Miriam Margoyles an abhorrent character (and in real life these days) and wish they’d write her out.

Clawdy · 27/12/2021 15:06

Yes, I can’t stand her either.

RainbowConnection1 · 27/12/2021 15:19

The episode was okay but the social distancing is so obvious in almost every scene and it ended up being distracting.

Alyssasbackrolls · 27/12/2021 15:22

It was my lockdown comfort watch and I thought last year's special was incredible given the restrictions but I barely made it 20 minutes in this time, just too twee. It has jumped the twee shark if such a thing exists.

ffscovid · 27/12/2021 15:45

@thenewduchessoflapland

Very obvious social distancing amongst the cast on this one;it looked abit strange in parts but it is what it is.
I found this a bit odd given that social distancing hasn't been a thing since July (I think?).

I might rewatch tonight as I got headache half way through but I enjoyed it and looking forward to the new series.

Gilmorehill · 27/12/2021 18:43

@lazymum99

The actor who plays Reggie is Leslie Grantham (dirty den) son. Just found that out while trying to see which tv program he went to live with his girlfriend in
No way!
PatriotCanes · 27/12/2021 18:58

Given there is so much tragedy and so many accidents in Poplar, once again I have been found wanting that none of it has happened to the Buckles Grin

LIZS · 27/12/2021 20:33

According to the fb page the Christmas special was edited by mid September, and I don't recall Helen George having a noticeable bump, so was presumably filmed early in the summer when social distancing applied. The bts snippets show mask wearing while actors are out of shot. The new series had finished filming by early November, so wonder how much we will see of Trixie.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 27/12/2021 21:10

@Clawdy

How is she now, AngelsWithSilverWings?

She's a beautiful and typically moody teenager! She struggles a bit at school but we always knew she might due to the drug exposure in the womb.

SantaClawsServiette · 27/12/2021 21:25

It's not the worst Christmas special. But there are some signs of wear, that's for sure. Some of the really compelling stuff just isn't up to the same level and the newer made up characters are never quiet as real as the ones based on real people.

I wondered a bit about some of the historical elements - was heroin addiction not more of a later phenomena, it seems to me it was more late 70s/early 80s?

Rockbird · 27/12/2021 21:47

I love it and love the Turners but it definitely isn't the show that it was at the beginning. The social distancing thing is annoying but I'm hoping that will reduce throughout the series. The Christmas special was filmed way back starting in March so lots of them wouldn't have even had their first vaccine.

MorrisZapp · 27/12/2021 21:54

I've just watched an old christmas special with Anita Dobbs as an elderly woman whose abusive husband died in the snow. She is just superb.
