Well this is boring.

Just when he was out at night and playing snowballs. I kept thinking oh no he's going to have a heart attack or fall and bang his head

lozengeoflove · 26/12/2021 11:31

Agree with PPs — what a dull episode. When L&C spun each other in the snow, I nearly threw up my Christmas dinner. DM seemed to be enjoying it, so had to stick with it 😬

LIZS · 26/12/2021 12:07

Enjoyed it but there were way too many subplots which never developed to the extent of previous episodes. Would the self righteous Dr Turner really have treated a wounded criminal himself and not informed authorities?

iklboodolphrednosedpaindear · 26/12/2021 12:38

I didn't watch it but they're probably skirting round 'doctor / patient confidentiality' with a massive dollop of 'Isn't Dr Turner wonderful (simper, simper). How many 'Oh, Patricks' were there? Enough for a drinking game?

Frazzled2207 · 26/12/2021 12:42

Used to love it but I feel it was really gone downhill last two years. Boring.

And like a PP said I really can’t believe Trixie would still be living at nonnatus house. I know she’s had her issues but she surely would have married years ago.

Olliesocks · 26/12/2021 12:43

@home2012

Did anyone else feel they are foreshadowing something happening to reggie.
What would be the life expectancy of someone with Down Syndrome in the 60’s?

Probably only early to mid 20s according to the Down Syndrome website.

tribpot · 26/12/2021 13:06

I do think it's a shame Sister Hilda never gets more to do, she's far more interesting than most of the other characters. And her background in the WAAFs is crying out for a prequel series where she gets to kick arse instead of deliver the occasional baby and spike the punch.

AlbertBridge · 26/12/2021 13:43

It's very predictable. You could see the breech birth coming as soon as that midwife said she'd never done one.

The problem is, there's never really any jeopardy. It's gone like Ted Lasso went in series 2; no real threat. Everything always works out a bit too easily.

Imayhaveerred · 26/12/2021 14:42

Was the episode with the young red haired girl giving birth by herself in a derelict house with a booklet she’d picked up somewhere a Christmas one? That was extraordinary and shows how far yesterday’s falls short.

MrsJBaptiste · 26/12/2021 15:13

I've just watched it and thought it was one of the better Christmas specials, quite gritty in places whereas some years have been quite boring and a bit pathetic.

As for the social distancing, what is it with Cyril and Lucille? They are the only ones whonstand a mile apart from each other. Most of the other people aren't really socially distancing anymore except for the hideously cringy nativity at the beginning of the programme.

Yes. That one was excellent. And the one about the woman who's children died in the workhouse.

Oh goodness.

That’s within my lifetime.

Just shows what huge strides have been made in medicine.

Emmelina · 26/12/2021 17:52

The “kiss” on the bed between Cyril and Lucille was absolutely ridiculous! And they were so far apart at the altar.
Are either of the actors clinically vulnerable? Is that why they’re so far apart? It’s just so awkward and weird.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 26/12/2021 17:58

I hate the social distancing in it. Watch tv as an escapism and that just reminds me of the shit of covid

Yes. It stays off until they stop that nonsense its unwatchable

no other dramas are sticking to this social distancing rubbish
Theoldcuriosityshop · 26/12/2021 19:58

A friends brother had Downs, he was born in the 30s and lived until he was 68. They didn't all die young.

Oh I'm not saying they did, just it seemed like something was about to happen. Would not be surprised if something happened to him next series
LavenderAskew · 26/12/2021 20:17

I really enjoyed it. Absolutely loved Lucille's wedding dress. The ways around social distancing cracked me up. Though Cyril and Lucille appeared to be actually holding hands coming out the church so u did wonder why they bothered.

It seemed very colourful!! They appear to have replaced teal with all the colours.

LavenderAskew · 26/12/2021 20:20

@middleagedmarch

Shelagh and the dr are so cringy. Why is she so irritatingly simpering?

Have I dreamed things though? I could have sworn that a previous episode showed Reggie moving in with a girlfriend who also had a learning disability. I'm sure Trixie went out with that rather dashing good-looking and rich bloke with the nice car. Anyone else remember these things?

Best bit of last night's episode: nuns getting drunk.

Dashing good-looking and rich bloke with the nice car was in it @middleagedmarch

Improving living and proving how clean living he is .

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 26/12/2021 21:14

Phyllis and her pearls broke me. I love Phyllis. And the bridesmaids and page boys.

Love Mother Mildred.

Loved the plastered nuns.

Love Reggie and Fred.

Loved the frock.

I have to say that Phyllis provides me with 99.9% of my CTM moments. Lorca recital? Beautiful.

But sister Emmanuel and Mrs Jenkins? The workhouse howl?

Sometimes I feel more than I’d care to.

CoffeeWithCheese · 26/12/2021 21:24

Oh god if it's still socially distancing-tastic I'll give it a swerve - I really hate the TV programmes shoving it down our throats (I had to turn Strictly off the other week because there were so many pointed face mask in audience shots, and Sewing Bee went ridiculous with it at one point) - I need escapism when I watch TV at the moment - not more hammering with it all.

Shame cos I used to love CTM - not so much the characters but the social history aspect of it always fascinated me.

Clawdy · 26/12/2021 21:51

The leech bit was weird! She had a massive haematoma which vanished completely like magic. Guess they must have researched it though.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 26/12/2021 21:58

It is a shame they can’t train leeches to like fat…

The speed they sooked down her eye, I could be in a size 8 by Tuesday week.
