I’m three episodes in, and I’m like “meh”
Not very funny and depressing…
Hate all the “box ticking “ it’s overtaking the show
Charlottes daughter can’t just be a tom boy ( which in itself would be funny ) she has to be -whatever they were saying? Transgender?
3 min “comedy sketch” about being Bi….?
Charlotte and Stanford don’t like each other?
Big wanking ..( eew)
Steve just going “eh? What?”
Carrie totally ignoring Charlottes warning about Miranda’s drinking?
Miranda’s Prof saying she was a White Saviour when trying to point out to the guard he was being unreasonable?
Everyone mentioning their age every scene?
Why would Carrie be putting herself through the embarrassment of a vulgar podcast when she’s clearly retired writing and married to a millionaire?

I’m debating whether to just imagine them, all running home from the desert where my imagination left left after SATC2 …

I quite like it.

Although I don’t like how ‘old’ they’ve made them - they’re in their 50s, Insta and podcasts etc shouldn’t be something either new or weird. I don’t know any people in their 50s going deaf due to age either. Also don’t know anyone of a normal weight in their 50s who gasps ‘my knees’ if they briefly run down a street.

I particularly don’t like how clumsy and out of touch they’ve made Miranda - doesn’t fit with her character at all.

I think charlotte’s daughter saying she doesn’t feel like a girl is a really normal thing - lots of parents are navigating this. I don’t find it especially ‘woke’ or ‘PC’ it’s a really common thing to come across as a parent now.

I’m not sure about the Che character - they’ve made them very much like black characters are often portrayed in these kind of shows, as fonts of wisdom providing breakthrough moments for white straight characters. Che’s not really a character with flaws and difficulties and complexities.

Agree with a PP it was always vacuous rubbish and nothing has changed. I’m enjoying the escapism, they remain as entirely non-relatable as they were the first time round.

dayswithaY · 22/12/2021 07:22

I just keep thinking why isn't it fun? It used to be a bit of gorgeous escapism with the clothes, shoes, dating hot men. Now it's all so heavy and serious.

I think it was a mistake to open with that Big storyline as it set the tone for the series ie, Carrie dealing with misery and grief.

I know lots of women in their fifties who are having fun and adventures, these three are just dreary and that's not who they are.

The podcast is ridiculous - Carrie would have her own!

Thank goodness for Anthony and Stanford - they are the only characters who haven't changed.

Benjispruce5 · 22/12/2021 07:49

I think maybe if you’re are also older, you’re looking at it through a different lens. It’s not that deep( as my teen DD says) and never has been.

Apple1971 · 22/12/2021 08:01

Hated the first episode which felt like it was trying fart too hard to be politically correct (hate the term woke!) . Second one was just sad. By the third episode I was enjoying it a bit more - felt a bit like the old characters were back and had moment of funny in it again.

Love the clothes. Quite enjoy the way the characters are messing up (I like the Miranda storyline - the fact someone so successful is messing up so much is refreshing) and carrie ignoring the drinking problem is like the old days where she was shamelessly self obsessed.

It clearly has some awful aspects. The white saviour comments are cringey . These women live in one of the most diverse cities in the world - why they find it so hard to mix with people of a different culture is hard to understand. And for a show hoping to remove stereotypes, having the Chinese child being the musical genius doesn’t really do that!

It’s not like the old series but I’m quite enjoying it in some ways. It’s just a bit of clumsy writing and escapism.

Benjispruce5 · 22/12/2021 08:05

It made me go back and watch a few old satc episodes. They weren’t as good as I remembered. I think this is part of the problem.

No, it’s never been deep in the slightest, but it now seems bent on depicting affluent 50something New Yonkers as continually bemoaning their advanced age, being baffled by podcasts, younger academics and black people’s hair etc. And why has the always irritating Steve morphed into a cliché old man — it’s not just deciding to give him hearing loss, it’s the weird crackly octogenarian voice and continual ‘Eh?’
ElectraBlue · 22/12/2021 08:21

No for me.

There is no Samantha and the current Chris Noth sexual assault stories have really put me off.

Also everything I have read make it sound like it is all about complaining about age and politically correct rubbish.

I would rather prefer to remember the show as it was before: fun, bitchy and silly but also comforting and about female friendship.

Ginger1982 · 22/12/2021 08:34

I find myself fast forwarding through certain bits (Big masturbating, Miranda kissing Che etc). Some of it is unbearable.

ttcpatronisers · 22/12/2021 08:39

I am enjoying it!! Not so sure about the funeral episode but the first one I liked.

Not sure why people find the 'woke' aspect so irritating. It's a reflection of modern life obviously exaggerated but these things are happening in the world - a black lecturer with braids probably wouldn't be taken seriously by many - I think it's good they're highlighting these issues?

Transgender is everywhere so why the issue?

mumofEandE · 22/12/2021 08:42

I feel like SATC was proactive and instigated and provoked discussion/ ideas but AJLT is 'just' reactive to what's going on in society.

Loved so far:
Anthony's response to Charlotte
Miranda's appearance
The way they have tackled age head on - almost from the first line of episode 1

Not so keen:
Carrie now seems more prudish than before
Steve's hearing issues - I assume that this will be part of a storyline involving Miranda coming out
Charlotte having a daughter who hated fashion would have been enough!

ttcpatronisers · 22/12/2021 08:43

@mumofEandE completely agree with your post

I’m an academic, and have been for almost 30 years, across a variety of institutions in different countries. I can assure you that lecturers have been black, and worn their hair in assorted black styles, especially at a diverse institution like Columbia, which has been investing millions of dollars in diversifying its faculty, for all that time. It makes absolutely no sense for a smart NYC lawyer to be fazed by the youth, race or hair of her professor.

The ‘woke’ is irritating because it misrepresents — virtually every 50something professional woman I know is gender-critical and profoundly concerned about the impact of TRA on the erasure of women’s hard-won rights. It makes zero sense for a successful writer to be kowtowing to this sort of thing and desperately to fit into someone else’s dimwit podcast. Carrie would have her own, and Miranda would probably be campaigning for women’s spaces,.

Orpheline · 22/12/2021 09:21

I'm re-watching the old SATC instead.

NandorTheRelentless · 22/12/2021 09:26

@OLDnightmare

I’m a die hard fan of SATC and enjoyed the first movie. But I found the second film horrendous. And just like that is truly shocking. I can’t face it anymore. It’s not even the woke stuff - although it could have been handled much better. It’s just painful and cringeworthy and not true to the original show or characters in the slightest. Poor Miranda.
Oh agree, the second film, jeez I've seen bad films in my life, but that one... wow

And what on earth is with turning Miranda, the only one from the original series with an IQ higher than her shoe size, into a babbling, dimwit, menopausal lush?

Totally agree with you, hopefully they are all just bedding back in and it will improve

I would have thought that Miranda thought she was not the lecturer because her hair was SO different to her faculty photo, not because braids are bad or frivolous. Kind of like if there had been a dramatic weight loss/gain? (Fully aware I am saying this as a white woman, and not meaning to be disrespectful or rude)

DillDanding · 22/12/2021 09:41

Although I agree with everything the OP says, I’m sticking with it.

I’m hoping to get used to Charlotte’s ruined face at some stage.

TheRemotePart · 22/12/2021 09:44

@NandorTheRelentless yeah that’s what she meant : she looked different from her photo. But they had her babble on inexplicably instead

MuchasSmoochas · 22/12/2021 09:54

It’s cringe but I will keep watching it for the sets and the style.

Was pleased that Anthony was anti woke in his reaction to Charlotte’s daughter- his “wait and see” is different to the woke “affirm”

However I really did not like the way Carrie was shown as a prude in the first episode during the podcast because she hadn’t masturbated in public. When did that become acceptable? They were goading a kink shame 🤢

LittleBearPad · 22/12/2021 10:09

Antony’s response was great.

Carrie was always something of a prude - compared to Samantha etc so that’a not new. Equally that podcast is horrific.

NandorTheRelentless · 22/12/2021 11:09

It was a goady shock jock type broadcast, it was meant to be shocking and against 'social norms' It wouldnt be shocking if they said "hey who has masturbated in public? no? me neither..."

drawhander · 22/12/2021 11:23

Its cringey

Like the movies were

Kim Cattrall is not stupid

Was the original programme this bad? I loved it so much. The 90s and 00s seem so different to now

drawhander · 22/12/2021 11:26

Cant it be woke without being woke?

Have diverse characters, transgender etc but surely sophisticated savvy city professional women would have sailed into the present day without being so bloody clumsy about it

Just weave that into the story without making the girls look like a bunch of idiots

AnnieSnap · 22/12/2021 11:42

@Benjispruce5

☝️ This, as I said earlier, I’m 61 and it’s just a bit of light entertainment showing older women for a change. Miranda is supposed to be 58. A previous poster said no one in their 50s have problems with their hearing or (if they are slim) have a issue with their knee/knees. This is rubbish, plenty of people develop hearing issues in the 50s. In fact most people start to develop a little hearing loss from about aged 40! Back and knee problems often start in the 40s too. Real pain with them can definitely be happening in their 50s!

It’s just entertainment people, it’s not a documentary!

dayswithaY · 22/12/2021 12:06

But the characters have turned into boring fuddy daddy confused old ladies. Have they been locked in a room since 2004? Why are they so fazed by gender issues, successful black women, technology, social media.

They were sassy career women in their 30s who had lived and thrived in NYC for years, why are they being depicted as maiden aunts on a day trip to Manhattan gawping at all the crazy young folk.

Charlotte saying they will all smell of weed after watching Che's stand up. Are they seriously suggesting she never went clubbing in New York around weed before? We've watched the earlier series, we know what they got up to!

dayswithaY · 22/12/2021 12:07

Fuddy duddy not daddy
