I must have missed the episode of the original series where we learned that Steve was 40 years older than Miranda. Umm seriously, he was like a very elderly old man in that scene with Miranda. Even before Miranda told him she wanted a divorce, he was just so doddery, like a man in his mid-90s.
And while Miranda is being horrible and insensitive, tbh, Steve's argument in favour of their marriage was pretty bad, "come home, talk about Brady, eat ice-cream, watch some tv. That's life Miranda, married life." It's would have been more realistic for him to say, "I'm content with how we are but I can see that it's kind of a rut and not great for either of us. Lets commit to making more of an effort to have fun with each other and break out of my comfort zone." I'm no fan of this version on Miranda but a life of ice-cream and tv and nothing else would be dull as shit. My grandmother in her 90s has struggled deeply with lockdown as up to two years ago she went dancing and to to her clubs all through the week. On trips around the country throughout the year and on holiday abroad annually. A life of ice-cream and tv has bored her into ageing more in the last two years than she had in the previous decades. For Steve to expect that from middle-age onwards is ridiculous.
It wouldn't even be a natural post-Covid thing for him, where some people have found themselves too comfortable at home, because he's a Manhattan bar owner. He'd be extremely busy right now reestablishing his business. It's such a testament to the lack of ability of these writers to get into these characters lives and heads because if they wanted to show the breakdown of Miranda and Steve's marriage, that's the way to do it. Have it that lockdown caused him insane levels of stress as his business was put on complete hold. And have him now, in their miraculously absolutely post-Covid world, utterly thrown into working to bring his bar back to life and the joy of being back out in a world that Miranda has no part of. Why turn him into a very, very elderly middle aged man?
As an aside, Carrie's downstairs neighbour was a series regular on HBO's Betty. A dramedy about female skateboarders. Maybe they could have her hang out with Rose and show her that like skateboarding doesn't make her a non-girl.
