Anyone watching?

OP posts:
Aquarius1234 · 07/10/2021 14:09

I read that AMM asked to be on this show before the proper casting started!
She really like the writers previous work on channel 5 ? With the line of duty man. Forgot the names. .

Aquarius1234 · 07/10/2021 14:10

But its gotta be up there with one of the worst dramas I've watched. Very cheesy and stilted bla bla bla

doggyjoe · 07/10/2021 14:15

I am LOVING it!

I was totally gripped last night but was distracted by DH coming in and dancing in front of the TV a few times (don't ask!). I missed some important bits so watched it again on ITV+1.

Love it so far. There is bound to be a few twists.

I agree with the poster who said Ben in his bedroom was like Damian in the Omen.
And the poster who said Teresa looks like Michelle Fowler in Eastenders ......... omg I can't unsee that now !!

PrincessScarlett · 07/10/2021 14:27

None of the characters are particularly likeable so finding it really hard to get into. But maybe that's the point 🤷🏻‍♀️ Agree with PP that I feel sorry for Ben. There's no motherly love there at all is there. What chance does the poor kid have when he's been hated/black sheep of the family from birth. I also think the relationship between Ben and his mum reminds me of We Need To Talk About Kevin.

PrincessScarlett · 07/10/2021 14:30

Also got really angry when I saw head teacher wiping her daughter's abusive messages and then Theresa deliberately falsely identifying the photographer but I'm assuming the plotline is in part about how far would you go to protect your child.

Hdhdjejdj · 07/10/2021 14:44

It’s just so implausible it’s hard to like. And that’s before we start on the awful characters and not so great acting.

ChequerBoard · 07/10/2021 15:46

I really like both AMM and Rachel Stirling - they were both great together in the Bletchley Circle but finding this much less compelling so far.

MissMarpleRocks · 07/10/2021 17:25

It’s a strong cast. AMM, RS & Jim Howick. Surely there has to be more to it! Ben isn’t loved is he?

Surely at some point Alex’s teacher is going to say she showed Helen messages & may tell them about his possible abusive childhood.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 07/10/2021 20:59

Am I the only one who thinks that AMM is dreadful in this. It's like she's never met a real person and doesn't know how people talk or behave

The whole thing is totally unbelievable. Being made in lockdown is no excuse for terrible acting and wooden writing.

Foxlover46 · 07/10/2021 23:08

They are such unlikeable characters it's really hard to care enough to get invested

Wingedharpy · 08/10/2021 01:00

I'm really enjoying it too @doggyjoe.

Watching the 2 sisters tying themselves up in knots while trying to protect their own children, is maintaining my interest.

I think AMM's character is so overwhelmed and distracted by all that's going on, she isn't responding as a "normal" human being would in these circumstances.
She's made most of this mess herself as basically she already thought her son was a bad 'un before anything had happened.
She was very quick to assume his involvement the minute she knew about the missing child.

Agree with PP, she doesn't love Ben.
I don't think she even likes him.

Mooserp · 08/10/2021 18:26

I thought the e-fit that was a perfect match for the local dodgy photographer was hilarious!

And then the detective giving her confidential information. It's just bonkers 😆

lollipoprainbow · 08/10/2021 18:57

I love AMM in motherland but can't stand her in this ! The strange looks all the time and you can barely make out what anyone is saying. Apart from Rachel Stirling and her booming deep voice !!

SydneyCarton · 08/10/2021 21:27

I noticed the weird fake looking houses as well; wasn’t sure if it was a way of conveying the whole unreal Stepford thing or whether it was to try and protect the privacy of the real life residents.

It’s definitely veering into “so bad it’s good” territory for me….. Surely the most basic forensic analysis of Alex’s tablet (and why has none looked at this yet??) would show that messages had been deleted?

It’s a shame, because I think the basic storyline of the child conceived through rape, not knowing anything about the biological father, wondering and worrying about your child’s behaviour and where it might come from is a really interesting idea for a drama 🤔

I wonder if Alex’s mum found out about his dad’s affair and staged his disappearance to try and bring her husband back, but Alex somehow accidentally died, hence the whole “he died the night before he was reported missing” thing….

RevolvingPivot · 10/10/2021 08:39

I know it's their actually voices but they (I can't remember their names Anna / Racheal?) sound so put on.

The boys dad usually portrays rough characters so I can't see him and the headteacher being together.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 10/10/2021 09:17

Watched the first one, switched off halfway through. Tried the second, got a bit more into it so watched the first again 🤷‍♀️ One thing though was I couldn’t read were the messages Ben had sent to Alex ?

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 10/10/2021 09:34

I switched off after 15 mins as I could only hear one in every four sentences…

SydneyCarton · 10/10/2021 12:17

Flibberty It was stuff like everyone hates you, fuck off and die. The girl (Eva?) sent them too, with one calling him a snake I think. They were definitely bullying him but not sure who was the instigator.

GreyhoundG1rl · 10/10/2021 22:00

@TheGirlInTheGreenDress

I switched off after 15 mins as I could only hear one in every four sentences…
Not just me, then... What on earth was the whispering/mumbling in aid of?
CoronaPeroni · 10/10/2021 22:03

Another one agreeing about the poor sound. I was watching on catch-up and couldn't get subtitles, infuriating.

MrsKeats · 10/10/2021 22:06

I have never seen a headteacher's office with not a single piece of paper in it.
I can't stand the way that actress speaks (forgotten her name)
Why were they going on about needing more space when their house is the size of a castle?
Why does no one do any work?

HuckleberryJam · 11/10/2021 15:33

I'm enjoying this. I love TV series like this.

SirYawnsAlot · 11/10/2021 15:45

Who was the flirty guy who answered the door to the BIL? (Is it Raspy's husband?) and why was BIL visiting?
I like that he presented the broken planter without a spec of soil on it.

Fenelladepompom · 11/10/2021 17:25

I didn't recognise him, but comments on here lead me to believe it was the Headteacher's husband. Looked older to me though.

diddl · 12/10/2021 09:01

I think it's rubbish-but will end up watching to find out "whodunnit"Hmm

Perhaps me & others like me are the reason that this sort of guff keeps getting madeGrinBlush

Someone earlier mentioned Rachael Stirling looking like a man in drag.

She was in an episode of Lewis as a man who had transitioned!
