Hurrah! That is all.

Didn't like Sue at all

PeppermintMocha · 20/10/2021 21:30

Mel and Sue chose to leave - but it doesn't mean that their replacements aren't really ,really terrible!! I just watched German week and was cringing the whole time at them.

Giuseppe as star baker was right, though I felt they did keep piling on the pressure on poor Jurgen at bit, and his was more like what real German yeast cakes might have been like. I too thought it was funny when he compared it to stacking apple crumbles!

Quite glad Freya left in the end, as I don't think her bakes really stood up to the others, and she didn't seem to learn from the criticism very well, just insisted it's how she wanted it. I do find Lizzie's a bit messy and over-bright, but that's just my taste. I thought George was more likely to go than Freya though, with his raw dough.

But overall, this week was one of the most impressive, with practically everyone doing well in at least some of the rounds, no stand out disasters!! All of their biscuits were pretty amazing, and the technical cakes were decent too.

Helenluvsrob · 20/10/2021 21:42

I want a jürgen and Giuseppe show.
They can do pretty much anything and I’ll watch ,❤️

Mel and Sue were on R5 Live with Nihal. They were painfully unfunny. Mel and Sue went to the loo together and Mel did a shit. Hmm
AppleKatie · 20/10/2021 22:12

Late to the party this week but I enjoyed it. Guiseppe and Jürgen are obviously amazing but I do think Crystelle is underrated and her stuff is usually brilliant too.

Amanda/George both on thin ice I reckon.

lovablequalities · 20/10/2021 23:15

I love Noel. He's going to be my next husband. I like the weird bits he does and I think he's really nice to folk when they are upset. I am sure Matt is lovely but Little Britain and being dressed as a baby are quite a lot for me to forgive. I'm warming to him slowly.

Gussiepie and his gorgeous curls will be in the final along with Jürgen and I think Chiggs.

MrsFin · 21/10/2021 00:18

An all male final would be fab!

Mydogisagentleman · 21/10/2021 07:34

Well said @Dancingonmoonlight
I saw Matt on extra slice. He does seem genuinely interested in the contestants

absolutelynotfabulous · 21/10/2021 09:52

I like both Noel and Matt but I don't think GBBO needs the input from anyone other than the contestants and the judges.

I quite the voiceover though.

antsinyourpanta · 21/10/2021 10:04

I don't watch extra slice but this doesn't come across at all in the main programme!!
I don't know what it is but the jokes and skits don't come across well and there doesn't seem much rapport with the bakers. (This might be wrong but that's how I perceive it it as a viewer)

UselessASD · 21/10/2021 10:10

I don’t like the messing about. There seems enough drama and fun within the tent. May not need a presenter, but if they gave one I’d prefer a bit more serious, just comforting or encouraging- definitely not throwing things, behaving stupid and messing with giving the time left ( they could just have a large clock and a count down clock.)

Flavabobble · 21/10/2021 10:10

I like Noel and love Matt. But they're pretty awful on this and have no chemistry. The 'jokes' are the same thing over and over. Mostly of the "I'm mad, me, dead mad" variety.

Matt has the most wonderful voice though.

Dancingonmoonlight · 21/10/2021 10:46

But they're pretty awful on this and have no chemistry.

I’d say the complete opposite is true. I think they make a great double act and seem to genuinely like each other. I think they bring an awful lot to the show.

We all have such different perceptions and sense of humour.

I’m thankful they are there be over a bland dull Holly/Tess type presenter any day!

bibliomania · 21/10/2021 11:06

Excellent point!

Deadringer · 21/10/2021 11:17

I quite like Noel and Matt in general, but on bake off their humour is so unoriginal and hackneyed, if there is something really trite and obvious to be said, it's guaranteed that one of them will say it. They are spoiling the programme for me tbh; dd wants me to watch it with her, i think i will just fast forward their bits.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/10/2021 12:13

I think Noel and Matt work very well solo - especially when they are interacting with the bakers - they both seem to get on well with them and are good at letting the bakers be the centre of attention.

One thing I remember reading about Mel and Sue (from a GBBO contestant) is that, if a contestant was getting really stressed and upset, Mel or Sue would go over to them, and use words unsuitable for before the watershed, so that footage of the contestant getting upset couldn't be broadcast - I liked that. Clearly they didn't do it all the time, otherwise the footage would have been very bland, but it does sound as if it happened sometimes, and shows they were supportive of the contestants.

Dancingonmoonlight · 21/10/2021 12:23

I remember reading that too but that was when the BBC had it. Their format was lovely and gentle and focussed on baking.

C4 want drama and panic and rushing around and tears. It isn’t the presenter’s fault. It is the format of the C4 show.

It is a completely different show to the original. Just look at The Great Pottery Throwdown, The Sewing Bee etc - they still have the gentle format that the BBC create. I much prefer it to the mad dash C4 format personally but that’s not what C4 want.

I hated how they kept cutting between Jürgen & Giuseppe. There was no 'rivalry' or 'tension' apart from how they edited it. They seem to be good pals.

The strudel we got was very nice. Pastry week next week so I might make a fruit tart or apple pie.

Crackletranton · 21/10/2021 20:25

I thought it was a real testament to the relationship of the contestants that Jürgen gave tutorials in the preceding week.

I'd love the pair of them to do a my cooking heritage type show, like Nadiya did when she went to Bangladesh.
Maerchentante · 22/10/2021 19:17

Just caught up with this week's episode.

Giuseppe definitely deserved Starbaker. All his bakes just seemed so good.

Looking at the showstoppers I thought Jürgen's was the only one that actually looked like a yeast "cake" should look like. Not so sure about the filling as I am bit more traditional and prefer to just have raisins in the cake. I'm also fully behind Jürgen's statement that you wouldn't stack this cake
Had to smile a little at Prue's comment about his cake looking a little like breakfast cake. It can often be found on hotel breakfast buffets in Southern Germany.
The texture of Guiseppe's cake looked perfect for a yeast cake. Not so keen -lookswise- on the other cakes. This was at some point a "poor people's cake" as it needs very little other than flour and yeast. Just an egg, 250ml of Milk, 70g of Sugar and 70g of melted butter. Everything else, like raisins, almonds, etc. were just extras.

The Prinzregententorte definitely was quite tricky and worthy of a technical challenge. Shame about the heat in the tent, though.

Loved all the biscuits and would love the recipe for Amanda's Glühwein jam.
Happily could have eaten my way through the offerings.

I think Freya going was the right decision.

Ellmau · 22/10/2021 21:34

For anyone that misses Mel and Sue, Mel, solo, is presenting the new woodworking contest show.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 22/10/2021 21:45

Freya, on Extra Slice, said her and Lizzie are great friends and got matching GBBO tattoos in Liverpool Smile

I don’t miss Mel particularly but the wood turning programme sounds great. Do you know when it is on?
