Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:
Dancingonmoonlight · 20/10/2021 00:10

Amanda not Lisa!

2Two · 20/10/2021 01:03

How could George survive having produced a cake with an entire layer massively underbred?

2Two · 20/10/2021 01:04

Noooooo - underBAKED, not underbred!

EsmaCannonball · 20/10/2021 06:19

I thought it should have been George to go and not Freya. One of his biscuits was rock hard, he was one place lower than her in the technical, and his showstopper was raw. She had an iffy week but his was worse.

Fizbosshoes · 20/10/2021 06:29

I was disappointed lizzie did not win the technical im sure they were more complimentary about her cake than Guisseppes. Her show stopper looked great as well. I actually thought Jurgens looked a bit plain and wasn't "highly decorated" which was the brief. If someone else had produced that I think they would have said it was basic. However we thought they didn't criticise him because he was making something more authentic for German week and maybe highly decorated bread cakes aren't actually a thing in Germany (he already said they wouldn't be 3 tiers)

There was a lot of Paul squishing, squashing and prodding things this week - even DH noticed!

Fizbosshoes · 20/10/2021 06:32

I was sure George and not Freya would go. She's done some really impressive things in previous weeks too, but most of George's ones have either gone wrong, or just look a bit messy. I like both of them as contestants though.

Fizbosshoes · 20/10/2021 06:36

Neither of them seem that interested in the contestants.

...or the food.
Matt catching the cake when Paul knocked it it fell off the table was probably the most entertaining thing he's done.

SanFranBear · 20/10/2021 07:07

Have to agree with the majority about Matt & Noel - it just seems so unnecessary and they just go on and on, flogging an unfunny joke!

I was also sad to see Freya go as I thought she was excellent and I loved the fact she was baking purely vegan stuff (except for the technical, I can only presume). Hopefully opened some eyes as to what can be achieved even if, at times, I thought it put her at a disadvantage! If they can have German week with a German competitor, they should definitely bring back Vegan week and get everyone in on the action.

I actually really like Pastry week so looking forward to next week although I would like to see Chigs do really well again - he's really talented for someone who's not baked for very long and I thought his bakes last night were excellent..

Yes! Funniest moment in the show!
Igneococcus · 20/10/2021 08:06

But German yeast cakes don't get highly decorated (or stacked in tiers) , it's just so wrong, it actually made me squirm. They might get a bit of icing or maybe a sprinkling of icing sugar, and a Bienenstich gets filled with a creme pat (or whipped cream in my family) but that is it.

knittingaddict · 20/10/2021 08:17

For what it's worth my thoughts from this week are:

Guiseppe and Jurgen are so talented and lovely. I can see them on a food/travel tv series together. Guiseppe on his own would be great too.

Lizzie was really funny this week. I found her annoying at the beginning, but definitely warming to her now.

If the judges were at all torn between George and Freya leaving then Freya's problematic vegan bakes probably tipped her over the edge. Having to find decent substitutes for a particular food must be very tricky and sometimes that showed.

Matt and Noel were exceptionally awful this week. I'm starting to dread their sections of the show now. Most of their "jokes' land so flat and even the contestants seem to look perplexed by them or laugh out of politeness. Lizzie could stand in for them in future.

George to go next week.

Noel and Matt seem OK when they are on their own either with the judges or the contestants - especially Noel - but when they are doing their scripted 'jokes' together, they are appallingly unfunny.

I much preferred Mel and Sue - in fact, I want Sue to be my best friend and come round for coffee and cake - and the show did suffer when it lost them and Mary Berry.

I was surprised when Freya was eliminated - before the series started, I saw news reports saying that chose to leave the show, after she had received online abuse and criticism because she is a horse rider, and some felt this was incompatible with being a vegan - so I was expecting her not to be there at the start of an episode - I wasn't expecting to see her eliminated.

I don't know where the stories came from - maybe someone trying to whip up interest in the show.

Mydogisagentleman · 20/10/2021 12:32

Controversially, I was glad to see Maggie and Freya go. I love George,Lizzie and Amanda and chigsand fully expect to see Juergen, Gioseppe and Crystal in the final.

I agree with Juergen and Gieuseppe but I don’t think Crystal is any better than some of the others?
Lizzie’s cake looked a mess to me but the judges liked it? Chiggs is ok too.
I think they are fairly on par?

Whiskyinajar · 20/10/2021 12:59

Matt is, a thoroughly nice guy. He's a friend of a friend and I've only ever heard good stuff about him. Really supportive in shows to younger cast members including helping them with accommodation when needed.

I also like Noel, no idea about him but he's friendly with Rahul who won Bake Off previously. Rahul baked a cake for one of his children's birthdays.

PickAChew · 20/10/2021 13:22

I think Chigs is the biggest improver of the show. He makes mistakes but does appear to learn from them. Either he or Crystel could be the 3rd finalist and it's just a matter of which order George, Lizzie and Amanda will be eliminated in, between now and then. Lizzie could surprise us but I think she's just too busy having a good time.

I'm not sure how social media bullying could have influenced a decision by any contestant to quit, given that it's all filmed months in advance and names of contestants aren't released until a few weeks before the show airs.

antsinyourpanta · 20/10/2021 14:03

I don't dislike Matt (or Noel) I just don't really think they bring anything of interest or entertainment to GBBO
I've found both entertaining and funny in other things but they just seem to fall flat in this. It all seems a bit awkward and you see contestants looking confused like they should laugh out of politeness.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/10/2021 14:29

That’s a good point, about the filming schedule and social media bullying - I should have thought of that at the time. I genuinely did see the story, though.

Newgirls · 20/10/2021 14:35

I like Matt and Noel too but the show doesn’t need two presenters. A presenter doesn’t always need to be funny either - the show is interesting enough

TonyThreePies · 20/10/2021 16:33

I just dropped by to see if anyone knew what happened to Noel and why he disappeared before the end?

knittingaddict · 20/10/2021 16:59

Not a clue. I would love to know too.

He did have that conversation with Jurgen about German Bake Off only have one presenter. Perhaps he saw the writing on the wall and had to have a bit of a lie down.

bibliomania · 20/10/2021 19:29

knitting, I'm warming to Lizzie too. Of all of them, she interacts best with Paul and Noel - I think they are genuinely amused by her. I think she'd be fun on a night out.

Dancingonmoonlight · 20/10/2021 20:30

I don't think its nice to keep reading how people want Mel and Sue back and how much they dislike Noel and Matt. Noel and Matt are very talented and they are not on the show to talk about oven temperatures and raising agents!
There is plenty to complain about since C4 took over the show - not least the ridiculous number of ad breaks, the time pressure the contestants are put under, being told to use chocolate in heatwaves, Paul eyeing up every female contestant under 40, making it into the format of 'reality' tv rather than a show highlighting amateur baking skills.

Its been five years since they were on it and they chose to leave.

There. Rant over. :)

Davros · 20/10/2021 20:35

But Noel and Matt are shite. Just sayin...
