Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:

@Skiptheheartsandflowers

Chigs did really well but felt like they overegged it to effectively say 'It's not just between Jurgen and Giuseppe, you know!'
Agreed. They didn't want to give it to either of them again.
Ellmau · 12/10/2021 22:26

I'd begun to find Maggie's insistence on simple classics a bit frustrating, especially when she wasn't managing to pull them off.

When you do simple/classic, you absolutely have to do them perfectly on this show.

Maggie was the obvious boot this week. I'd have given Jurgen star baker again, but I can see why they didn't want to give it to him three weeks out of the first four.

I wonder how long Freya has been vegan

I think she said at one point only about a year? She was really annoying again this week after having been quite tolerable the previous two.

PrincessScarlett · 12/10/2021 22:55

@ChessieFL

Jurgen will have a bit of an unfair advantage in German week!
Didn't they have French week a couple of years back and there was a French lady that series - Manon was it?
WeAreTheHeroes · 12/10/2021 23:19

Tbf you can't get more British than sticky toffee pudding so it should be levelling the playing field for Jürgen!

I'm not sure that's true. He got a hand shake in the signature, came 3rd in the technical and his show stopper apparently tasted fabulous. I'd say he earned it.

They've also given star baker to same person multiple times in the past. Richard from season 5 had it for 3/4 weeks in a row, Stephen in series 8 had similar and I think Ian in season 7 had it for a few weeks in a row quite early on then didn't get it again.

Still wondering why Maggie's showstopper was called "Paris Skyline" when the collar was just images of strawberries?

JemimaTab · 13/10/2021 05:33

I was wondering that too. I thought I must’ve misheard something.

HarlanPepper · 13/10/2021 06:30

Just popping in to say it's Jürgen or Juergen (if you can't find your umlaut - usually you just hold down the letter key) but not Jurgen. Umlauts aren't like optional letter sprinkles.

Do you think something went wrong with the concept and was cut in the edit ?

Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2021 07:26

Twitter seems to think it's a C4 issue with voiceover or subtitling.

No comments to make on the bakers or their bakes then? Lovely. Hmm
CaptainMyCaptain · 13/10/2021 10:34

Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurgen. No, it doesn't work on my keyboard.

Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2021 11:36

Well, I think it is fair comment but I also can't do acute accents for French names or words or double dots over eg Chloe on my laptop.

I have A Level German and French and it does annoy me that I can't. (and it isn't pedantry: it's his name)

I shall endeavour to remember to write Juergen from now on, personally.

To be fair to me harlan, I am saying it right in my head Smile

On physical (UK English) keyboards you can get aeiou with an acute accent by holding the 'alt gr' key and the letter

For lower case u & umlaut hold down 'alt' and then on the number pad (not the row of numbers above qwerty) type 0252. If you're on a laptop without a separate number pad then there's usually a way of doing it, on mine I hold down fn and alt and then m k i k. The letter doesn't appear until you release all the buttons.

When I started learning Icelandic I had to memorise the codes for æ ö ð þ & ý or 0230,0246,0240,0254 & 0253....

On my phone I just added another keyboard!

ChessieFL · 13/10/2021 15:57

I have no idea how to do umlauts or accents on my phone.

The English word for umlaut is dieresis. "Umlaut" is a German word.
Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2021 16:14

Yes.... and we were discussing a German name....

SirYawnsAlot · 13/10/2021 16:40

Tell you what, let's make a joke about a mouth being a bum-hole and burping in someones face but it comes out a fart and they can smell it and try and waft it away.

Lovely start to a baking programme.

I don't think so... this was posted a couple of hours ago and they're sticking with Paris Confused

Yeah, I thought that was weird. I didn't know the target demographic for BakeOff was twelve-year-old boys.

Oh, what a great word! I will try to remember the umlaut/dieresis for Jürgen (have a feeling he will be around for a while).

Re: Maggie, I agree with PP that if you're going to do something traditional it has to be absolutely spectacular. At least creative recipes are interesting to try.

For those of you who like the engineering side, you might want to check out "Baking Impossible" on Netflix. They pair a baker with an engineer to pull off some amazing challenges. Warning 1: Not a good show to watch if you hate food waste due to the scale. Warning 2: You will have to endure frequent use of the cringe-worthy neologisms "bakineer" and "bakineering".
