Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:

I learned that an umlaut was the word used for the mark that changes the vowel sound, as happens in words from German ( like Jürgen) but a diaeresis, while looking the same, is actually a different sort of mark - it shows that a second vowel is pronounced instead of forming part of a digraph (i.e., like in Zoë, to make it sounds like Zo-ee, rather than rhyming with toe).

I watched the catch-up tonight, and poor Maggie, but it was totally obvious and right that it had to be her.

I still wanted Jürgen to be star baker, but Chigs did do well too, and I think they probalby thought they should spread the star baker awards out.

Crystelle still seems to slightly be putting on this 'flapping' act but I think she's pretty controlled and competitive underneath.

Not keen on Freya, and the vegan stuff sounds a bit grim to be honest.

I think Amanda might be at risk now, though Paul might like her. Paul was never keen on Maggie, maybe because she never seemed intimidated by him really, and he probably thought she should be, given all the mistakes she was making and his criticisms of her - she kind of laughed them off.

NandJ · 14/10/2021 03:55

I'm still rooting for Crystelle, she's barely put a foot wrong but never even been in contention for SB.

Whereas all the men have to do is not fuck things up and the sun shines out of their backsides.

Newgirls · 14/10/2021 08:28

Crystelle is excellent yes. I like the young vegan baker - shows what can be done and Paul Hollywood’s comments on her baking do seem out of touch.

YouJustFoldItIn · 14/10/2021 15:52

Sorry, late to this thread but only just watching on catch up.

Am I the only one who is developing a massive crush on Chigs?

Freya. Hmm. Apart from the REALLY annoying voice (was ready to hurl the telly through the window if she said Cappucci- nurrrrr one more time) I feel that she is hugely disadvantaged by only baking with vegan ingredients. Vegan cakes can be alright but they have their limitiations and they simply are not as good as non-vegan cakes.

You need to decide what works in vegan baking and then only showcase the recipes that are really great and can stand up against non-vegan cakes. But that doesn't work when you have to stick to a tight brief - the meringue for example. All that's happening at the moment is that her cakes seem 'quite nice considering they are vegan'.

That's not good enough to go much further but this was always going to happen. They can't sling her out too soon in case they are accused of picking on the vegan.

I think she's on thin ice now. She needs to decide whether staying in is more important to her than keeping to her vegan principles.

@CaptainMyCaptain

I'd watch the Jurgen and Giuseppe show. They are both so lovely too.
Oh this would be lovely! They could be like Bert and Ernie Grin
EsmaCannonball · 14/10/2021 17:11

I like Crystelle but the three men who have won Star Baker so far have done so by having particularly stellar weeks. I've got her down as a finalist but this week, for example, her technical round was a disaster and there's no way they could have justified her beating Chigs. In other series she would have been the stand-out contestant but the EuroBakers have made such a strong start this year.

To be fair, the men have done a lot better than just not fucking things up.
Davros · 14/10/2021 22:42

Why can't I get episodes 2 and 3 on catch up? I've been trying for over a week

WelshDaffodil · 15/10/2021 00:50

Not sure Davros, it's definitely on catchup, I watched it tonight on there. Try resetting your device or set the Daleks on em ;)

shrugshrug · 15/10/2021 09:31

@Piggywaspushed "... chocolate has no place on a pavlova."

Whaaaat !!!
Dark chocolate swirls are divine with raspberries on a pavlova.

Passion fruit and pavlova are lovely together- the sweetness and tartness combine well with the cream.

iklboo · 15/10/2021 13:41

@Davros - are you checking 4OD? They're on there.

Davros · 15/10/2021 13:59

I tried various ways and could only get S1 and S4. I'll try again. Not that I love it anyway, it's a handy filler

Davros · 15/10/2021 13:59

Thanks btw

lomaamina · 15/10/2021 19:53

@Davros, I had the same, but found it on the front page as a popular show.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/10/2021 19:57

Love Jurgen and I love Pastime with good company. He's a man after my own house.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/10/2021 20:21

@HarlanPepper

Just popping in to say it's Jürgen or Juergen (if you can't find your umlaut - usually you just hold down the letter key) but not Jurgen. Umlauts aren't like optional letter sprinkles.
Sörry.
IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 15/10/2021 20:27

You're not the only one with a Chigs crush Blush.
Saying that, I really want Jürgen to win. I'm half-German, which is partly why I'm rooting for him. But, also, he just seems so lovely - and he obviously he knows his stuff. I'm looking forward to German week!

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/10/2021 06:40

It's Freya's accent that means she pronounces cappuccino like that. They've done vegan week on Bake Off before now. There are lots of baked goods that are naturally vegan or where one element can be replaced to make the ingredients completely vegan, but I agree she's not going to go the distance.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2021 07:31

I don't think Freya will go the distance either, but it's good to show that veganism doesn't restrict people to a diet of grass and potatoes.

Which is pretty much what I was fed for a week on retreat, even though the retreat house advertised as catering for any diet, including vegan, gluten intolerant. I dare say that strictly speaking they did cater for me, but it was totally unimaginative and unhealthy (yep - you can have unhealthy vegan food) and I didn't go to the lavatory for the week, I was so bunged up.- and it took about a week after I got home to get my digestive system into its previous good order.

Newgirls · 16/10/2021 08:39

I hope they have another vegan week. It works for those of us with diary free diets too.

SandDunesAndSaltyAir · 16/10/2021 09:35

I love Freya and her cappuccinü

What happened to Extra Slice last night? Confused

What happened to Extra Slice last night? Confused
It was on Thursday instead due to Stand Up To Cancer on Channel 4 last night.
absolutelynotfabulous · 16/10/2021 10:24

Thanks @ChildOfFriday

It's a bit dull these days imho but I usually watch.

LadyAddle · 16/10/2021 20:42

I've stopped watching Extra Slice because I cannot bear Tom Allen - if I mute him, that's a good chunk of the programme gone so it's not worth it. He's all about him, and that dreadful arch twinkling and gurning drives me mad. I'm yearning for the day when he is less ubiquitous.
