Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:
Ellmau · 06/10/2021 18:30

what was Jurgen thinking with the kipper and boiled egg focaccia?

I wondered if he was trying to sabotage himself because it was so embarrassing being star baker for the first two weeks and he didn't ant to demoralise the rest;)

Giuseppe was lucky there were two Italian breads in bread week, but having said that, it meant there was more expectation on him and more chance to fail.

Fizbosshoes · 06/10/2021 19:27

I think the older contestant possibly (I hope I'm not being too ageist) enter for the sheer love of baking (and are usually experienced and good bakers) but often the architects or engineers do better when they're making structures or more 3 dimensional type stuff.
The challenges definitely get more complicated every year. Sometimes the signature bakes look like something that would have been a show stopper 10 years ago!

PickAChew · 06/10/2021 20:50

Kippers and boiled eggs, lovely together.

Boiled eggs baked into bread, rubber.

FawnDrench · 06/10/2021 21:02

Love Giuseppe and he deserved star baker.
Would have liked to see 3 different bread "nationalities" and not 2 from Italy though.

I think Crystelle is one to watch and Lizzie is getting stronger - plus I think she's really funny.
I'm warming to Freya.

Getting increasingly annoyed by the "antics" of the so-called "presenters" aka in our house as the terrible tiresome twosome and find them boring and distracting.

Egghead68 · 06/10/2021 22:28

I agree about the bread nationalities. What about making parathas or naans, for example?

PeppermintMocha · 06/10/2021 22:54

trying to avoid this thread until I'd watched the catch-up tonight.

Can't stand Matt and Noel, just not at all funny and don't add anything to the show, not really supporting the bakers the way Mel and Sue did.

I wonder how long they have to practise - normally they'd have a whole week to come up with ideas, but I wonder if it's less this time, if they're all staying together.

I still like Jurgen best, but agree that Giuseppe earned star baker this time. It was ideal tasks for hiim!

I think Maggie will go next time too. She just doesn't seem to have the style needed for this. if it were making traditional cakes or scones or whatever, she'd probably be great.

Lizzie did well tonight, but I'm not that keen on either her or Freya. Chrystelle could be a stealth competitor though.

lollipoprainbow · 07/10/2021 03:27

@PeppermintMocha Noel and Sandi worked together better I think, Noel seemed more caring with her still a bit wacky but nice. Him and Matt just seem to be trying too hard to be funny and not really being that bothered about the contestants.

knittingaddict · 07/10/2021 03:39

Agree about Noel and Matt. They are just so tiresome this year and the unfunny jokey bits just go on forever. They don't seem to give a monkey's about the food. I blame Matt and think he's been a bad influence on Noel, who has been okish in previous series. I think it's the worst year there's ever been for the presenters. Not including Paul and Prue in that criticism.

SirYawnsAlot · 07/10/2021 09:10

I'm feeling sorry for Crystelle, getting told her focaccia was beautiful 3 times yet Giuseppe gets the handshake then getting dough flung at her workstation.
Didn't Mat and Noel smash something last year arsing about batting with rolling pins?

PeppermintMocha · 07/10/2021 09:29

At least Mel and Sue tried to comfort the upset bakers or help hold things and calm them down and so on, as well as presenting, so there was a reason for them there. And they could do innuendo without it sounding sleazy, just kind of funny. Apparently they always tried to stop the cameras showing contestants who were really upset, too.

Noel and Matt are just childish and it's all about them, not about the contestants or the baking.

Yes Crystelle should have got a bit more recognition for her foccacia, even if it was annoyingly thin! I think she is putting on a slightly ditzy/anxious persona, but underneath is going to be a bit competitive in the end.

The milk bread task was odd though. I find all the tasks where they make other food out of bread or cake a bit strange, especially when it's flavoured with something completely different - like hog roast or courgettes made out of hazelnuts or condensed milk. And all the really bright colours, while impressive to look at, would be odd to eat!

And yes, much as I like Jurgen, what on earth was he thinking with kippers and eggs in focaccia?!

PickAChew · 07/10/2021 09:39

I prefer Prue over Mary as she actually appears to enjoy food and strong flavours. Mary would be pulling faces at even a hint of spice (and having seen her make her abomination of a "curry" I lost a lot of respect for her as a cook)

SkepticalCat · 07/10/2021 09:56

I also think Crystelle is one to watch - reckon she'll get at least to the semi-final.

I also don't think she was too far off with her "long prove, short bake" theory for ciabatta.

Paul's recipe says 1-2 hours for the first prove. What did they get, 2.5 hours in total?

Paul's recipe has 15 mins for second prove and 15-20 mins baking. So I guess Crystelle did cut it a bit fine, but I don't think she was wrong with her line of thinking.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/10/2021 10:52

In an interview in the Radio Times Prue said Paul is the one who comforts contestants who are upset but they never show it. It's all in the editing, who knows what any of them do off camera?

My main problem is that Noel and Matt are both funny doing their own thing but not on Bake Off. Noel is very easy on the eye though.

user1471543094 · 07/10/2021 12:23

I'm back to Bake Off from a few series break as it is something my daughter and I have started to watch together. Matt and Noel are a bit of a struggle to watch, they are just trying to hard. Mel and Sue were just so much more naturally funny.

The whole thing is so drawn out as well with all the adverts - its really annoying.

Love Jurgen

I read this as a letter, signed from Jurgen Blush
🤣🤣

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/10/2021 18:08

I make focaccia quite often and I always let it rise overnight and the dough is liquid.

2.5 hours? Madness.

singlemama91 · 07/10/2021 19:40

Im just settling down to catch up on yesterdays bake off with a cup of tea Blush bliss!

I know everyone wants Jurgen to win but im hoping for Freya! Even though she is vegan haha

I agree.

Matt is totally self-promoting. An absolute bumhole.

singlemama91 · 07/10/2021 19:57

Sorry i havent read the thread above because i dont want to see spoilers but ive really enjoyed Noel and Matt this year!

Prue and Paul know and talk about the food so i think its ok for them to focus on the contestants and other things!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/10/2021 20:00

I never bake because I feel I spend enough time in the kitchen as it is. 2.5 hours to make focaccia or ciabatta when you can buy it anywhere now? It just doesn't compute for me!

Cake I don't give a stuff about, can totally take it or leave it.

Yet still I love GBBO.

woodhill · 07/10/2021 20:48

@knittingaddict

I think Maggie said at one point this week that she was sticking to traditional flavours all the way through the competition. I don't think that's going to win her any brownie points.
I really like Maggie

I'm glad to see someone say they like Noel and Matt- I was beginning to think I was the only one Blush I do think that some of the time calls are a bit silly, but they don't seem any worse than from when it was Noel and Sandi doing them to me.
singlemama91 · 07/10/2021 23:24

Haha yeah I think they're great. I probably do prefer Noel to Matt though.

Youre right the time calls are a bit silly but I think that is part of it. Deliberately silly!

Mc3209 · 08/10/2021 08:35

I am predicting final to be Giuseppe, Jurgen, and Chrystelle.

I am still waiting for Matt and Noel humour to catch up on me. Their jokes are a bit forced (to my ear).

PeppermintMocha · 08/10/2021 08:38

yes I think that is a very likely final line-up too!

I don't mind the actual time calls as much as all the little set-pieces they do, that are mostly stupid and unfunny, and the fact that they don't interact with the contestants all that much or in funny/nice/interesting ways, just childish things like flinging the dough around or whatever.

But as someone else pointed out, we do just see the edited version that creates a particular persona for all the presenters, so maybe they are better in reality!
