Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:

Freya sounds exactly like our niece's mum. It's disconcerting at times.

We used to do the Bake Off elimination bake too, we'd have to bake whatever the theme was as well - within reason. But we've not been in office since March 2020!

Dancingonmoonlight · 29/09/2021 14:25

I would like to see some simpler bakes like Victoria Sponge, fatless sponge, scones etc judged really strictly with some useful baking tips.

I would rather see the above any day over biscuits being attached to batteries!

RiotAtTheRodeo · 29/09/2021 14:39

Yesss. I do a big sigh at the gimmicky bakes. Just get them to bake something without the baked part being a mere vehicle for ridiculous bells and whistles. A fancy Victoria sponge would be refreshing.

@SkepticalCat

www.horlicks.co.uk/recipes/posts/horlicks-malt-loaf/

Horlicks has created a malt loaf recipe, without the dried fruit for those who don't like it.

I was thinking about making it, but I only have Ovaltine, and not Horlicks (would that work??). I also don't have any malt syrup.

I have Horlicks!

I buy it to make Malteaser cupcakes every now and again, but never use much and Horlicks doesn't last long. It goes hard after a while.

I will check out that recipe. Thanks.

@SkepticalCat

I know the judges weren't convinced that Maggie's construction met the brief, and I wasn't sure either.

Even if you didn't have many toys or a favourite toy as a child, wouldn't you just make one up? Off the top of my head - a dolls' house, spinning top, jack-in-box.

I thought the snooker table was great. Really effective and possibly not too tricky. My mum made my brother a snooker table birthday cake one year.

I thought the same re: George's plane, that the motor element saved it.

Also agree about the unfunny jokes. What Matt said about Paul Hollywood possibly being George's(?) father. Totally unnecessary and insulting. Not sure how that made the cut.

What did Maggie make? I can't remember. Says it all really.
iklboo · 29/09/2021 15:40

@knittingaddict - a beach scene with a beach hut, really basic gingerbread people and the 'interactive' bit was pulling a biscuit boat on a string across the 'sea'.

knittingaddict · 29/09/2021 15:51

Ah yes, I remember now. I thought she might have gone out because she had such a bad week. I think she might lack artistic flair.

Tulipomania · 29/09/2021 16:04

Just don't think Matt Lucas is funny in this.

SkepticalCat · 29/09/2021 16:25

@knittingaddict ooh Malteaser cupcakes! Would you mind sharing your recipe please?

@longtompot - do you have a malt loaf recipe that doesn't need malt extract? I reckon a combined recipe would work. I often look at several different recipes for various things and work one out using the ingredients I have to hand.

EsmaCannonball · 29/09/2021 16:45

As I also said about Tom not meeting the brief last week, the bakers have to submit all their recipes at the application stage so if they don't fulfil the brief they should either be asked to change them then or not get through to the televised contest. Don't ok the recipes only so the judges can complain about them during filming.

It's in The Cupcake Book by Cupcake Jemma. I assume this is the same recipe:

They are delicious.

Fizbosshoes · 29/09/2021 18:42

Just don't think Matt Lucas is funny in this.

Me either. He peaked when he did the impersonation of Boris last series. Some of the alleged jokes have fallen so flat its quite cringe-worthy to watch.

JemimaTab · 29/09/2021 19:58

I agree that Matt’s “comedy” bits don’t often seem to land with the contestants (or Noel’s “comedy” bits for that matter). It can be a bit awkward to watch which doesn’t enhance the viewing experience exactly.
As for the contestants: Jurgen and Giuseppe just look streets ahead of the others at this stage

Good point! 👍

EekGoesTheBaby · 29/09/2021 20:49

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius Ds2 is a teacher, and some of his school staff do a sweepstake - whoever gets the baker who is eliminated, has to bake something for everyone to have on Friday.

What a great idea! How fun!

I liked seeing more of Rochica this week. She has a nice way about her. And Jurgen is so well-natured, not to mention talented.

I liked the showstoppers, but they were definitely "style over substance". The judges hardly talked about the flavours...on a baking show.

SoMuchToBits · 29/09/2021 23:02

I'm pleased that Juergen did well again this week. He comes across as a nice chap as well as being very competent at baking.

Mydogisagentleman · 30/09/2021 09:52

Either Juergen or Giuseppe will win.
I did notice that the younger women really drag their words out and each one takes about 4 times as long as it ordinarily would

Ellmau · 30/09/2021 12:13

Jurgen and Giuseppe are both lovely and great bakers.

Egghead68 · 30/09/2021 12:34

I would like Juergen to win.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/09/2021 12:46

I watched on catch up today and one thing really gets my goat.

It’s when the throw away something and start again. Rochica did it twice, with the cream and her jam and someone else did that with the cream as well.

It’s so wasteful. I don’t think they should be allowed to do that.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/09/2021 12:48

Oh and Matt Lucas is painfully unfunny.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/09/2021 13:10

I do take your point, @ChardonnaysPetDragon - but they are trying to win a competition, and it would not be fair to make them use a spoiled element. Basically, it would mean that, as soon as anything went wrong, that person would be out of the competition.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/09/2021 13:23

Yes, but the element is spoiled because they spoiled it themselves, they have no one to blame but themselves, so they have to be careful if they don’t want to leave the competition.

Rochica did it twice, in one single episode.

Ellmau · 30/09/2021 13:24

They're usually pushed for time anyway, so I don't think redoing something is much of an advantage.

Peaseblossum22 · 30/09/2021 13:24

The thing that gets me is the way there is so much hair flying around, massively unhygienic
