Hurrah! That is all.

They're usually pushed for time anyway, so I don't think redoing something is much of an advantage

It’s the waste though. Not a care in the world, in the bin it goes.

You and I would think twice about doing it.

iklboo · 30/09/2021 13:44

Jurgen and Giuseppe are both lovely and great bakers.

Poor Jurgen when he phoned home last week to say he was Star Baker and nobody was in.

What happens to the actual cakes, breads pies etc that they make.
And they all say they've made tons of practice bakes beforehand.

Egghead68 · 30/09/2021 17:08

I think samples are put out for the bakers to try and the rest goes to the crew

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/09/2021 17:40

I suppose the filming crew gets those, and the practice ones are for friends and family, but this isn't about this.

It's seeing someone blatantly discarding something and starting again, and doing it again.

It might not bother you, but I hate waste.

iklboo · 30/09/2021 17:55

Amanda should have said hers was a jigsaw 😄

EekGoesTheBaby · 02/10/2021 21:12

About the food waste, I always thought someone should make a cookbook/blog with recipes for ingredients that went wrong. So, for example, if you've over-whipped your cream or whatever, maybe it wouldn't work for what you're making but you could pop it in the fridge and use it for something else.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/10/2021 21:39

If you over whip your cream, keep on whipping it and it will turn into butter. Rinse it in cold water, in a sieve, squeeze it out and add sea salt - home made butter.

EekGoesTheBaby · 02/10/2021 21:41

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius
Perfect! Yes, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. Thanks! Now you just need 50 more like that and you can get your cookbook going. Smile

ApplesinmyPocket · 02/10/2021 23:13

Agree with CaptainmyCaptain and Gaspode - I'd so much prefer a Village Show type selection of bakes rather than structures with a motor, a paint palette, and 'interactive lights'! I don't want them to go down that path of thinking they have to make it always more and more dramatic.

The process of pursuing baking perfection is really absorbing in itself, with all its complexity and risks and pitfalls and even people who weren't into it before can get drawn into it (see this funny tweet that made me laugh last year!)

I also heard you can gently stir in some I whipped cream and rescue it that way, although I haven’t tried it.

I'm a bit late to the GBBO party but do they ever or have they ever published the recipes of what the competitors have made ?

I thought the blackcurrant chantilly cream ( to accompany the brandy snaps ) sounded delicious.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/10/2021 09:15

They have a book out every year.

shrugshrug · 03/10/2021 10:07

Really !
That's brilliant.
Thank you.

PeppermintMocha · 03/10/2021 11:06

I've started watching again this year after not watching for a few years. I really miss Mel and Sue! It's just not funny now. But the baking is fun - I like Jurgen best I think.

I wish it wasn't all just a race against time, though I know that makes for good TV. And it all has to be a bit gimmicky in the showstoppers, instead of just impressive baking.

It sounds like they don't go home each week this season - something about a covid bubble, and a practice tent?

I wonder how that works. Surely they don't stay away together for 10 weeks or whatever? But if it's done over just a few weeks, there's not much time to practice and try things out and plan all the different showstoppers. I thought they'd usually be told about the next week's showstoppers a week before, so they could work it out that week, along with the first challenge. If they're all in the same practice tent, they'll all see each other. And they must need ingredients and equipment and so on from home to practice all the constructions and things?

MrsFin · 03/10/2021 14:57

I've been watching Junior Bake Off
Harry Hill is very good and would be great at GBBO.

Please no... I can't bear him...
MrsFin · 03/10/2021 15:31

He's very good with the contestants (kids). And 100% better than Matt Lucas.

EekGoesTheBaby · 03/10/2021 20:56

@PepperminrMocha, I miss Mel and Sue too. They were funny and entertaining, but they kept the focus on the bakers and the baking, not trying to steal the spotlight. They seemed genuinely interested in what people were doing. To me, Noel and Matt are like rose flavouring...a little goes a long way!

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 03/10/2021 21:36

I love rose flavouring! And I love Noel... less keen on Matt... I preferred Noel with Sandy, but actually would love to have Mel and Sue back if I'm honest...

AppleKatie · 04/10/2021 06:31

Yes the obvious fact that neither Noel or Matt give a shit about the baking is awkward to watch.

Dancingonmoonlight · 05/10/2021 08:45

I don’t find it awkward. They are tv presenters and not bakers and the presenters in all the shows are similar ie they are there to entertain.

Mel and Sue chose to leave. Whether their reasons were valid or not, they still decided to go. I don’t see the point of wishing they were still presenting years later. They moved on a long time ago.

Personally I’d like Paul to go more than anyone else, I find him sleazy and arrogant and he talks over Pru, but it seems we’re stuck with him.

Egghead68 · 05/10/2021 09:00

They all stayed on site together until eliminated last year. They each had a practice room in another tent. They showed some footage from it on an extra slice, I think. They all ate together in the evening except the judges and presenters ate separately until the last night.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/10/2021 09:12

I must admit I've never seen the point of the Mel & Sue/Sandi and Noel/Noel and Matt roles at all. I'd be perfectly happy with a baking competition where the contestants just got on with it, with occasional chats with the judges, like Masterchef. GBBO is a Gregg Wallace-free zone, thank god, and long may it remain so.

If there has to be a non-judge involved, there only really needs to be one, like the Sewing Bee, or like Harry Hill on the junior Bake Off. I agree he's very good on that.

AppleKatie · 05/10/2021 13:50

I might be old school about this but I prefer presenters who ‘present’ the topic/contestants not ones that present themselves.

That said Matt and Noel aren’t as bad as I feared they might be 😂 I just think there are better people for the job out there.

Still, looking forward to tonight.
