Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:

Aha it's easily misheard- I am so deaf I didn't even know they had mentioned her occupation on the TV Grin

ScienceSensibility · 22/09/2021 16:25

@EsmaCannonball

Love Giuseppe and Jurgen. Otherwise, there are far too many people selected for being 'quirky' rather than being good bakers.

To me the lookalike guy looked like the angry, quizzical lovechild of Andy Garcia and Anthony LaPaglia. The fact that he's only been baking for 6 months belies the 'Britain's best bakers' stuff.

Again the showstopper is a set-up to produce disasters. I wish the producers would realise it would be more exciting to see a tense competition because everyone is so good. It's a bit like the Channel 4 version of Changing Rooms being made for reactions on Gogglebox and Twitter rather than as good viewing.

Agree with every word of this post.

Who are these producers who think we need ‘quirky’ and ‘batshit crazy’ as a priority on these shows?
Ditto with Sewing Bee. These shows filled a niche for ‘gentle’ television showing highly skilled people. I found the original series inspiring and so enjoyable.
Now there seems to be some sort of ‘reality TV’ template regardless of the nature of the show.
The Big Brother/Towie/Love Island formate and features do not work when the programmes are based on skill.
As pp said, we can spot when contestants will have fairly won their place by virtue of their skill, and when they’ve been chosen to tick a box or lift the ‘crazy’ quotient.
Is it a vain hope to wish they would fuck off with the ‘one size fits all’ template.
We just have to endure a few weeks until the crap ones are thrown out and the truly skilled are allowed to shine.

EsmaCannonball

You have summed it up perfectly.

As for the opening ‘band’... What a load of s*te.

SunShinesBrightly · 22/09/2021 19:28

ScienceSensibility
Yes, agree that they have done the same to the sewing bee 😡

Rizzoli123 · 22/09/2021 20:00

Just watched. I like chiggs. I agree guiseppe or Jurgen to win

StoopitAutocarrot · 22/09/2021 21:58

Just caught up.

I laughed out loud at achy flaky tart, but I am easily amused.!

Jurgen made my best friends do wedding cake so I am delighted to be supporting him.

The young vegan seems very talented!

EekGoesTheBaby · 22/09/2021 22:10

Caught up today. I'm rooting for George, Jurgen, and Giuseppe. I thought George had a nice way about him (though I'm not sure he'll make it as far as I hope). Jurgen is affable, and I like his accent. I also selected Giuseppe before I saw his first bake for the strange reason that his son's face was blurred out. I assumed that was him wanting privacy for the child, which I immediately liked. Maybe it was for some other reason, but it doesn't matter now--I like both him and his bakes.

I'm also actively rooting against a few people for equally frivolous reasons, but I'll keep those to myself. It must be hard being a contestant and suddenly people are commenting about you. But they are in with a chance to win...a cake stand...so I guess it's all worth it.

I caught up yesterday as well. I can’t believe so many didn’t know what malt loaf was . My children are only late teens and twenties and they were brought up on it. Great stuff for D of E walks, high calorie , doesn’t go off, tasty. Also a frequent after school snack .

I liked Maggie , I think she was just a bit nervous and embarrassed by the constant Pru comparisons, I think Crystalle is out to win and I loved Jurgen.

Can’t stand Matt Lucas as a host, he always makes everything about him, like the stupid Flintstones episode . Noel has grown on me , he seems very reassuring and has picked up a few baking tips along the way.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2021 08:58

I caught up yesterday as well. I can’t believe so many didn’t know what malt loaf was . I agree there are stacks of it in supermarkets, children take the small wrapped bars in their lunch boxes. Perhaps, they only know it by the brand name 'Soreen'. What they made looked more like a tea loaf to me and the fruit should have been soaked overnight.

I don't know malt loaf or Soreen (I'm in Ireland), but I love tea loaf and it's so easy to make as well. I had a craving for it the other night when the programme was on.
Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 09:45

It’s actually not really like tea loaf at all, it has a very chewy consistency .

I know. What they made looked more like tea loaf though. It didn't look sticky. In fact, Prue, criticised one of them saying it was sticking to the roof of her mouth and DH and I both shouted 'It's supposed to!).
Fizbosshoes · 23/09/2021 10:45

I've mentioned this before (and sorry havent RTFT to seeing anyone else thinks the same) but it offends me that so many mis-haps happen when they are moving the show stopper cakes. DONT MOVE THE BLOODY CAKES!!! Let the judges go round to each bench like they do with the signature (which incidentally is usually a biscuit or cupcake that could easily be moved on a plate or tray)

A professional baker made a 3 tier cake for me. She assembled and decorated it at table, at the venue we had the party. She didnt coerce another person to bring it in and risk dropping it.

Agree! I've often wondered the same.

Maybe it's part of the "jeopardy" part of the show to show things going wrong...? 🌹

Fizbosshoes · 23/09/2021 10:54

Oops sorry I see that this has already been discussed Blush
Agree it adds an element of extra tension (as well as giving a very tight tight schedule)
I watched some really old episodes from the first few series and the show stoppers were just fairly normal, but impressive cakes. Now there has to be back story (self portrait/momentous time in your life/favourite memory etc) as well as an element of impossibility about it. Ie "make a bath tub out of meringue and spun sugar that should be able to bear the weight of an adult human" ....or similar.

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 10:57

The obsession with fondant icing gets me , it was lovely to see the piping on a couple of the contestants show stoppers especially the bouquet and the flower scene

RiotAtTheRodeo · 23/09/2021 11:05

I hate fondant icing, the taste and the look, and always think it's cheating really. Like making a cake topping with playdough. The piped flowers looked so refined in comparison.

They were fabulous. Absolutely amazing.

It's Maltana, basically.

AppleKatie · 23/09/2021 12:25

Late to the party but all caught up now.

I did spend half the episode wondering what MN was making of vegan teen. I wasn’t wrong Grin

Oh yum. Can't get tea loaf (tea brack) out of my head. Definitely going to make one soon :)
Toddlerteaplease · 23/09/2021 13:11

@CaptainMyCaptain I also shouted that as well.

lancashirebornandbred · 23/09/2021 14:17

Just caught up now. Was anyone else surprised that we didn’t see the discussion about who would be star baker and who would go? I wondered if there’d been a big disagreement. They usually show it right before the announcement.

Antsinyourpanta · 23/09/2021 14:33

^ I noticed that @lancashirebornandbred

I thought maybe it's too long winded and complicated with that many contestants. I usually enjoy it more when they are down to about 8 bakers and you feel like you know them a bit better. I was convinced Jairzino (sp) was going to go for the bonkers (and ultimately very unsuccessful ) way he approached the anti gravity cake!

TheHouseIsOnFire · 23/09/2021 14:51

Please do remember that Vegan Teen is 19 years old. All of you spouting on about her being annoying etc just think for a moment how you’d feel about a bunch of internet strangers saying that about your teenage DD. Unnecessary.

By all mean critique their baking skills and have an opinion but FGS there’s no need for nastiness about a young girl who’s put herself out there and is actually pretty talented by the look of it.
