Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:
EllieLondon5 · 22/09/2021 01:37

I don’t like Maggie Confused she’s highly irritating. Think Prue agrees with me.

I saw on Twitter that the vegan teen has had to remove her Facebook because she’s been getting all sorts of abuse for the fact that she rides a horse. Or something.

PrincessScarlett · 22/09/2021 07:12

@EllieLondon5 I saw that too, obviously has been irritating people on social media long before Bake Off.

knittingaddict · 22/09/2021 07:15

So riding a horse is irritating and worthy of online abuse?

knittingaddict · 22/09/2021 07:21

@ScienceSensibility

Taking a while for the names to stick in my head!

Loving Jurgen and Giuseppe. Precise and clean baking.

Can’t bear the vocal fry girl and also the awful Liverpool woman with the stupid hair. So many of them are incredibly messy.

The older woman with the beautiful diction ? Is that Maggie? She looks nothing like Prue, although their speech is similar.

It seems more balanced this year in terms of ages. Good. Looking forward to the rest.

The Maggie thing? She's an older lady, has grey hair and sounds posh. Apart from that she's nothing like Prue. It was all a bit silly really, but maybe it's more manic in the first episode to get people to relax.🤷‍♀️

Militant vegans might think she is abusing the horse. There are people who think that way.
knittingaddict · 22/09/2021 07:29

Ah yes, never thought of that. I hate social media sometimes. Can't do anything without offending somebody.

Housewife2010 · 22/09/2021 08:44

I wish Vegan Teen would tick those tufts behind her ears. What is vocal fry?

Tulipomania · 22/09/2021 08:47

The comparison between Prue and Maggie was both sexist and ageist, I thought.

Two grey-haired middle class women, so what?

A few years ago there was a contestant called Paul with silvery-grey hair and a goatee (other than that, not looking particularly like Paul Hollywood). They made many jokes during that series about contestant Paul and Paul Hollywood.

I agree it is a lazy source for jokes, but I don't think it comes from a place of sexism/ageism with Prue and Maggie.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/09/2021 09:37

@Toddlerteaplease

I want Jurgen to win just because I love his accent!
Same here!

Also love Giuseppe.

Actually, they are all nice (so far), but Vegan Teen's once, as others has said, is painful to listen to.

EllieLondon5 · 22/09/2021 09:41

I didn’t mind Vegan Teen 🤷🏻‍♀️

Totally buying a malt loaf today though I haven’t stopped thinking about it since last night

SunSeaSurfGin · 22/09/2021 10:12

I'm loving Juergen & Giuseppe

Don't mind Vegan Teen and Maggie

Not keen on the Liverpudlian with the silly hair

EsmaCannonball · 22/09/2021 10:36

Love Giuseppe and Jurgen. Otherwise, there are far too many people selected for being 'quirky' rather than being good bakers.

To me the lookalike guy looked like the angry, quizzical lovechild of Andy Garcia and Anthony LaPaglia. The fact that he's only been baking for 6 months belies the 'Britain's best bakers' stuff.

Again the showstopper is a set-up to produce disasters. I wish the producers would realise it would be more exciting to see a tense competition because everyone is so good. It's a bit like the Channel 4 version of Changing Rooms being made for reactions on Gogglebox and Twitter rather than as good viewing.

If they had a similar, colourful style of dress I would have understood it. They had nothing in common, not even, really, their age.
ihavespoken · 22/09/2021 12:15

Hello Smile can I join?

I love this year's lot! They are all a bit odd in some way - I really like it.

The lookalike guy reminds me of Lord Dave from the Ranganation if anyone's seen that.

I love Jurgen .

Also Tom - I did think it was ok for him to go but then at the end he said "I'm proud of myself, and I never say that, so it must be true" Sad Sad Sad

Ovalone · 22/09/2021 13:05

I think my money is on Jurgen and Guiseppe to get to the final.

Jurgen has the best eyebrows since Denis Healey.

I can't understand what the Liverpudlian woman is saying - it needs subtitles. She supposedly sells posh cars yet has the hair of a children's party entertainer. I wonder what she looks like in the showroom or has she done her hair just for the show as I assume the have taken a leave of absence to bubble until they are out?

I think Tom was picked originally because he looks and sounds rather "odd" and the whole geek/model railway thing presents him very quickly in that box.

Crystalle has clearly been picked as the pretty, assertive woman who Paul will sort of flirt/be challenging with. Already they are editing it to linger on the interaction between the two of them.

Maggie I am sure will be the most unflustered with the technicals. Suspect she has baked almost everything once that they could throw at them. She does seem to sound rather posh and to the point of not being so easy to follow.

George I hope matures into the show. He looked really nervous but friendly in a burly bloke/matey way.

It does feel to me when they do the introductions that there is a bit of a stress to show lots of family and it feels rather hetronormative - especially with all the men that they seem to show their families and wives very quickly to show they're STRAIGHT men (but in a baking show) whereas the women seem to be shown doing things like playing tennis or in their workplace. The one middle aged gay is always shown doing something really inoffensive like walking a dog with their partner. They always seem to pick nicely partnered gays as the producers I think struggle with how to deal with a singleton gay unless shown being best mates with their mum and living still at home.

JemimaTab · 22/09/2021 13:10

Giuseppe and Jurgen do seem to be the front runners (early days though). I’m still not sure Noel and Matt really gel, with each other or the contestants, but maybe that’s me. I just found myself getting a bit irritated by them both last night which got in the way of the show, for me.

viques · 22/09/2021 13:13

Looking forward to Extra Slice now, I think /hope it’s on Friday, I love the cake failures, especially the hedgehogs, now that would be a really good challenge for the tent - a hedgehog cake, no dentures allowed!

BooseysMom · 22/09/2021 14:13

@ihavespoken

Welcome Smile

I love this year's lot! They are all a bit odd in some way - I really like it.

I agree, they are a good choice, all different characters and ages. I loved Achey Breaky Heart at the beginning. "Dont break my tart, my flaky pastry tart.." Genius. Also Matt's German Flintstones..must have taken him ages to learn.
Matt and Noel on top form, funnier than what I can recall from last year and its only the first one.

I liked Freya.. her saying to Prue about that technique I can't remember being a lot of faff. Smile

ihavespoken · 22/09/2021 15:05

@Ovalone the Radio Times profiles say ?Lizzie? is a car production operative rather than a salesperson

ihavespoken · 22/09/2021 15:08

Thanks @BooseysMom !

I think Matt has been a great edition but he shows up how awkward Noel is - I love Noel under usual circumstances but he and Sandi had no chemistry at all. Although I don't think he's perfect for GBBO, I do think he works lots better with Matt.

Also, I want cake!

Djangor3725 · 22/09/2021 15:10

I was pleased that the first technical was something straightforward - the main test was whether they knew when it was baked. I make tea bread fairly regularly as it is great for my partner with high cholesterol & I usually put a bit of malt extract in it. Luckily had just bought 3 jars as expect it will be out of stock when I next go shopping.
I thought that Lizzie from Liverpool worked on the production line of a car factory rather than in sales.
Looking forward to bread week as hoping for some good german breads. Still remember delicious breakfast rolls from a holiday in Germany more than 20 years ago

My hearing isn't great. I must have mistaken "sells" for "makes" luxury cars. I was having real trouble understanding her accent on replay. Thanks for the clarification!

Mydogisagentleman · 22/09/2021 15:46

Hello.
I adore bake-off and think this year’s will be a good one.
I am super judgey and don’t know names yet, apart from Giuseppe (probable winner), Maggie - irritating and Liverpool bonkers hair is my current favourite because she has the same breed of dog as me
