Hurrah! That is all.

OP posts:

For the record I thought the 19 year old vegan contestant did a grand job, she came second in the technical and her piping was excellent, and as the mother of a 19 year old I think she is very brave to put herself out there

Absolutely. And she made me laugh too. I’m all for a bit of critical TV ‘banter’ but being bitchy about a kid is just not on.
VoyageInTheDark · 23/09/2021 17:24

Agree @TheHouseIsOnFire. I thought she seemed very sweet

AppleKatie · 24/09/2021 10:07

Just caught up now. Was anyone else surprised that we didn’t see the discussion about who would be star baker and who would go? I wondered if there’d been a big disagreement. They usually show it right before the announcement.

I would assume it was an editing decision because they had to spend so much time introducing the new bakers. If Paul and Pru had had a row channel 4 would definitely have broadcast it!!

EsmaCannonball · 24/09/2021 20:49

Watching Tom on Extra Slice. I agree that his showstopper didn't meet the brief but we know from that blog that was doing the rounds a few years ago that the contestants have to submit all their recipes at the application stage. It seems unfair for the producers to ok a recipe only for it to be deemed to fail the brief during filming. It's almost like they are setting people up to fail (again).

I thought she was great and her recipes seemed to work well. She made me laugh by admitting what a faff the whole aquafaba (sp?) process is!
JustDanceAddict · 25/09/2021 11:20

Agree re vegan contestant. I thought she was great & not too militant. She must’ve used non-vegan Ingredients for the technical as it had butter in it.
It’s easier to bake using vegan ingredients than gluten free (I avoid gluten free cakes etc as they’re never as good unless they’re supposed to not have wheat flour in them).

Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/09/2021 13:36

I'm wondering how all the technicals will pan out for the vegan competitor
Pie week for example have often been meat based
Will they tweak the technical in some way
Make sure all technicals are meat free

SkepticalCat · 25/09/2021 13:47

I was wondering the same about the vegan contestant and how she feels about using non-vegan ingredients for the technical challenges.

Fizbosshoes · 25/09/2021 14:05

I'm pretty sure the technical this week used egg and she did the same recipe as far as I saw. I don't remember previous technical challenges including meat.
The most offensive thing someone made was a healthy cake. Where is the joy in that? Grin

Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/09/2021 14:35

I'm sure years ago they made pork pies for a technical
Just musing really
Am going to enjoy this series whatever Grin

I had wondered this too - part of this week's technical required them to make their own butter!
desperatehousewife21 · 25/09/2021 15:43

Just caught up with it, watched it with DS (11) he’s got really into bake off over the past few years.
We like Gieseppe and Jurgen too.

She'll have known about it going in. There may even be non-technicals she has to relax her principles, eg I remember they had a signature Meat Pie once, and others where the alternative ingredient really doesn't work. Not sure I can imagine vegan choux or laminated pastry...

She may only have become a vegan recently so has used non-vegan products in baking before.

EekGoesTheBaby · 25/09/2021 20:48

I think it said Freya (do I have the right name?) just became vegan a year ago. So, so maybe she's somewhat relaxed/flexible about it?

Watched Extra Slice, and Baker Tom seemed really nice. It must be so disappointing to be the first to go.

Choccyp1g · 26/09/2021 22:04

@jay55

I wish they put the names on screen every time they speak for at least the first two episodes.
Me too, how can we get channel 4 to take up this brilliant idea?
Sunbird24 · 27/09/2021 09:53

I ended up buying 2 malt loaves this weekend - they were on offer and you can’t have just one slice at a time! Wonder what this week will have me wanting…?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 27/09/2021 10:13

I made a tea brack. It was only gorgeous.

Housewife2010 · 27/09/2021 23:03

I made a malt loaf with Prue Leith's recipe at the weekend. Very nice.

iklboo · 28/09/2021 13:26

Got the biscuits for later Biscuit

What are you going to build iklboo? I am planning on a two layer ginger nut wall going all round the rim of a small plate. I will be employing the drystone wall method so no butter cream or tricky caramel glue required. I might go for three layers if I can still my shaking hands .
jay55 · 28/09/2021 16:38

I'm going for a cardio routine of alternating between lifting ginger snaps and penguins to my mouth.

That’s a good idea, remember to alternate left and right hands , you don’t want to end up with fabulous Michele Obama upper arms on one side and Gemma Collins upper arms on the other.
TheDogsMother · 28/09/2021 20:03

Evening all. I do love a Brandy Snap.

ILoveYou3000 · 28/09/2021 20:04

Channel 4 have listened, they're putting bakers names on screen 😁
