New thread, looking forward to finale, but wishing it really was the last episode, with all storylines and characters ending satisfactorily.

Thanks BIWI , something to read with my lunch. Blessed day.
torchh · 24/08/2021 12:56

@BattyOrange

Not sure why people who clearly don't enjoy it come on this thread and slag it off Hmm

Me neither. Who does that?

It's so weird. Just turn your tv off, and unwatch the thread!

@LadyEloise1

In light of what is happening in the world today and in particular in Afghanistan, Margaret Atwood 's The Handmaid's Tale was sadly all too prescient.

I know all the awful things done to women in the book had happened in real life.
That it is still continuing is utterly heartbreaking.

Margaret Atwood said that she wrote The Handmaids Tale after visiting Afghanistan in 1978, shortly before the war broke out. I think she said that trip was very influential in writing the book.

@torchh Odd because I don't get how people who actually watch Handmaids Tale don't see the irony of trying to stop women having an opinion about something....

It is a discussion forum, we are expressing our opinions about the show. I can like it and watch it but recognise that it has flaws.

Exactly! It's a discussion about the show, not an echo chamber. It's been a weak season, but still one of the best things on TV.

Crinkle77 · 24/08/2021 16:40

@JaninesEyePatch

June has killed/been responsible for killing a lot of people too.

She also let Eleanor die when she could probably have been saved.

Oh yes forgot about Eleanor!
Crinkle77 · 24/08/2021 16:43

Ooh and she was also mean to OfMatthew who thought June was talking about her to AL and she ended up dead when OM lost it in the supermarket.

Sorry I'm missing something - I remember OM losing it in the supermarket but who ended up dead?
TeaStory · 24/08/2021 17:17

OfMatthew did.

BIWI · 24/08/2021 17:18

I don't think this has been a weak season at all. I think it's been fantastic.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/08/2021 17:19

Even the milk wagon?

BIWI · 24/08/2021 17:38

OK. Apart from the milk wagon Grin

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 24/08/2021 17:59

Why does June say, give me a five minute?

Is June going to be prison? What's going on

Iggi999 · 24/08/2021 18:08

She could have washed the blood off, come home and got into bed. She doesn't need to go, in that sense. I'm sure Emily isn't planning to go away from her dc.

BIWI · 24/08/2021 18:11

I think she means that she's going to leave. She just wants 5 minutes with Nichole before she goes.

goinggently · 24/08/2021 18:11

I think it's been brilliant too!

Especially with all the gymnastics they've had to do to work around covid...! I think it's pretty miraculous really... listening to the show runner on the podcast yesterday, it sounds like it's been a nightmare!

BIWI · 24/08/2021 18:21

I doubt if June will go to prison, because a) Fred's murder happened in No Man's Land and b) the manner of his death was one that he, himself, designed in Gilead.

Crinkle77 · 24/08/2021 18:49

It's so weird. Just turn your tv off, and unwatch the thread!

I don't want to turn off despite not this season as much because I have invested so much in it. Thd first season was so amazing I got obsessed with it. It affected me the way no TV show has ever done. I studied the book for A level English and hated it probably because I was young and just didn't get it. Watching with age and experience I totally got it. Even though I knew where the storyline was going in the first series it was so tense and horrifying I couldn't sleep on a Sunday night. I also enjoyed the back stories and discovering the inner workings of Gilead.

The second series was good but they dragged it out a bit and by the third series they were starting to stretch the realms of possibility a bit with all June's failed escape attempts, ending up back at the Waterford's for the umpteenth time and people have ended up on the wall for far less than June.

However I will continue to watch because I've invested so much time in it and I've read The Testaments so want to see if they follow that in any way. Oh and also cos I'm willing Janine to get out. I think though that possibly stretching it out to 10 series is a mistake and they should wrap it up sooner before the audience starts to switch off. Too often a programme get so huge it becomes a victim of its own success. I feel the same about Killing Eve. First series was so amazing that the subsequent ones couldn't live up to the brilliance of the first and it should have finished after 1 or 2. I wish Phoebe WB hadcome back to write the rest.

@BIWI

Yes, *@SoupDragon* Fred was a rapist - you're only allowed to have sex with your handmaid during the ceremony.
Not to mention that the handmaids weren’t exactly giving consent . If you are coerced then you are not giving consent.
SoupDragon · 24/08/2021 19:12

Not to mention that the handmaids weren’t exactly giving consent . If you are coerced then you are not giving consent.

The point I was making was that consensual sex would have been rape.

I presume any spilling of seed would be against the rules, plus I think all men are assumed to be fertile and any issues are because of the woman"

That was my feeling too. It was always the woman's fault in Gilead.
Interestingly (to me anyway!) I had IVF in 2002. It took my male GP 3 years, & only after extensive tests on me, to consider my H's sperm count. In fact he was infertile & I was 'super fertile'. I was advised by the male GP & the male Embryologist not to mention it as it might 'upset him to emphasise the issues were male factor'. It did.

Just watched the last episode last night, having started Series 1 mid July when my kids went away for 4 nights with my exH so I had a THT binge. Now, I Need to watch it again!!

ohthatbloodycat · 24/08/2021 20:03

Oh for fuck's sake, wash your face June.

ActonSquirrel · 24/08/2021 20:17

@ohthatbloodycat

Oh for fuck's sake, wash your face June.
I thought that. She even got Fred's blood on the baby's face. It's macabre.
52andblue · 24/08/2021 20:56

@Crinkle77

She couldn't leave Hannah in Gilead but she'll happily leave Nicole? Wtf???
But Nicole is safe and with Luke and other friends. And just a baby still. Whereas Hannah is growing up with strangers in a totalitarian regime which is violently anti women. Plus Hannah is forgetting June is her Mother more every day whereas June still has time on her side with Nicole.

(sorry, just catching up with thread..)
