New thread, looking forward to finale, but wishing it really was the last episode, with all storylines and characters ending satisfactorily.

Watching again on +1. The gulf between June and Luke is more obvious. June - I'm going to put Fred on the wall. Luke - they're going to let him go, you have to let him go. June - I'm going to put him on the wall.

Luke can't know what she went through, but I'm not convinced he's tried to understand. If I were him, I'd be raging on June's behalf. But many years have passed too. I think it's a insightful portrayal of their situation.

@goinggently

I will miss Fred making my skin crawl to be honest!
I think he was the ‘least strong’ actor in the show tbh so it will be a relief not to have to endure him. If I decide to watch the next season.
Crinkle77 · 22/08/2021 22:37

I think they were all members of the resistance who had been imprisoned

I thought they looked like they were wearing Martha outfits.

Anyway I thought Fred would end up dead at some point. In the epilogue of the first book Fred was killed in a series of purges to get rid of Liberal commanders so it seems the writers are sort of sticking to the book in some ways in that Fred had to die. Even though Fred was a complete cunt I just don't feel satisfied with his death. I feel like the women were reduced to a pack of animals.

DHandInterview · 22/08/2021 22:37

I loved the episode today but I actually wish that Fred had had to face "official" justice, such as a trial, in Gilead and then got put on the actual wall for his crimes. I hope there aren't any legal ramifications for June or Emily back in Canada next series.

Even though Luke can't imagine what June went through, surely he has hate in his veins because Gilead / Fred / Serena took his daughter from him?

Why is he so forgiving???

Schweetheart · 22/08/2021 22:38

Agree that it can only be one more season to tie up loose ends, get Hannah out and everyone lives happily ever after Smile

goinggently · 22/08/2021 22:39

@MrsRobbieHart interestingly, I found his the least insightful interview on the podcast too! He seemed less engaged with the whole thing

LaurieFairyCake · 22/08/2021 22:39

They've bought the rights to the Testaments so hopefully they will make that too

I don't think Elizabeth Moss will be in it though - I hope they give her a good ending

Tightwad2020 · 22/08/2021 22:40

Are Nick/Joseph directly involved in the management of the colonies then? 'Cos you couldn't move 22 women out without alerting the hierarchy. Probably overthinking it - we're just meant to enjoy the Maenads mauling Fred to death.

He’s pleased June is home, he’s done the honorable thing by taking in Nicole. He’s tired of it and wants to live normally. He’s let Hannah go and wants June to do the same.
Schweetheart · 22/08/2021 22:41

So n my any powerful messages and themes. Very important for women.

goinggently · 22/08/2021 22:42

I think Joseph is very much so.... remember him letting June choose some women to save when she was his handmaid? He seemed to be able to make them disappear somehow

RampantIvy · 22/08/2021 22:42

Why has Fred whispered in every episode so far? Is it to sound more creepy?

goinggently · 22/08/2021 22:42

He was intensely creepy in this one...

RiaOverTheRainbow · 22/08/2021 22:43

I assumed that Gilead okayed exchanging 22 marthas for blabbermouth Fred, Nick will say he tried to escape and was shot, and the commanders won't care that Fred died a day earlier than scheduled.

OverByYer · 22/08/2021 22:43

@goinggently

I wanted to say earlier that I so enjoy Lawrence's performances. He is amazing!!
He’s brilliant.
Faircastle · 22/08/2021 22:44

I think this would be a good point to end the series. There was a sense of closure, and the image of the body on the wall and the "nil desperandum carborundum" brings us full circle from Season 1.

sympatico1 · 22/08/2021 22:44

Have we been told that there definitely will be another series?

I like to think that if he hadn't been killed, good old Fertile Fred might have ended up as a male equivalent of a handmaid 😁
Tightwad2020 · 22/08/2021 22:45

Oh, thanks. I forget a lot because i'm half-bored and massively irritated when watching it, as it is so fucking slow and expensively drawn out. It is like reading the third novel in the Wolf Hall trilogy!

WitchSharkadder · 22/08/2021 22:47

Yes, S5 is confirmed already.

WitchSharkadder · 22/08/2021 22:48

I agree that Joseph and Nick likely got those 22 women out without it being 'official'. We've seen Joseph help people escape several times before.

MrsRobbieHart · 22/08/2021 22:49

Joseph and nick appear to have a level of power that makes no sense in Gilead.

namechange7865 · 22/08/2021 22:51

He’s let Hannah go and wants June to do the same.

How can you just "let" your daughter go to a society like this, yes Hannah might be safe and well at the moment as a coveted child, but what will her life look like when she reaches puberty in a society like that? It's not just about having your child back with you, but protecting them from the evil of Gilead. June will not rest until Hannah is back, and shame on Luke for letting go so easily.
