Evening Brew Cake
Setting up the bingeing thread which, same as last year, works parallel to the concurrent one which is TV pace.
This thread is for those of us with no willpower to discuss the whole series freely.
Episode 2 with the loose women references and Pat/Kitty's dance routine was joyous was my favourite from the six.
But the whole series works - whether it's willy-shaped chess pieces or butt jokes. It's just a lovely ensemble. I also thought Mary had better lines/more to her part this time around.

I've just bingewatched all three series in since last Friday. Loving it. My favourite is Robin by a long way. I loved 'his' retelling of the Thomas story, and him going on about zumba.

KimikosNightmare · 25/08/2021 23:36

Just finished series 3. Oh that was lovely!

LemonViolet · 26/08/2021 12:04

“Now man called Thomas do poem”

“Ahem……..something about flowers, or wine, or girls and stuff….”

Grin

I loved Mary’s retelling where the guests literally have wine shooting out of their ears.

I agree Thomas has had zero character development and the joke is done now. But then….can ghosts really change?

NapoleonOzmolysis · 26/08/2021 12:12

….can ghosts really change? I think Julian has had quite a lot of character development. Robin has learnt lots of new things like cryptic crosswords and chess. Perhaps that's what jars with Thomas, he's still a one trick pony and a crap poet.

MartyHart · 26/08/2021 12:20

I hope they give us more on every character especially Mary and the Cap.
I loved it when Mary was telling her dream and Cap said "oh, strap in."
I also loved "Steady the buffs Fanny!"

LemonViolet · 26/08/2021 15:24

True, Julian has definitely grown as a human since he died.

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/08/2021 15:52

They cannot really show Kitty's death (by suffocation? hide-and-seek? sister locks the trunk or closet she has chosen to hide in?) or Mary's (witch trial and burnt at the stake for treason or some such) without it scaring the kids. When it was first on, with Pat's death which was quite nasty, it was shown quite late...but they must have cottoned on to the fact that families are viewing it together now so are avoiding the problematic bits, like death Michael Hutchence style for Julian or whatever went down and the two vulnerable characters.
They could introduce more characters by having someone die on site, they could have one sucked off and the actor pop up later in a different guise, they could have them all go off into the light as a one-off finale. But it is tricky, isn't it? Will there be enough to go off, when the hotel is up-and-running and how do you film that atm?

I reckon Mary didn't die at the stake. Burning at the stake was for treason or heresy. I reckon she was waiting for execution and the gaol burnt down or something.
Humphrey's death wasn't what it appeared.

That's a good call - and would explain why she doesn't want to talk about it!
NapoleonOzmolysis · 27/08/2021 08:25

The end scene of the final series surely has got to be Alison dying in bed at Button House - like Heather Button in the first scene of E1 S1 - while the rest of the ghosts look on, possibly with Ghost Mike with them?

You could easily have a new ghost for 2-3 episodes who then gets sucked off. I thought that's what was going to happen with the irritating guy next door. Then you get some mileage out of them all adjusting to someone new. There's definitely another series in it.

PPCD · 27/08/2021 19:10

I want Alison and Mike to have a baby that can also see the ghosts.

KimikosNightmare · 28/08/2021 11:07

@PPCD

I want Alison and Mike to have a baby that can also see the ghosts.
That's more likely than Alison dieing and becoming a ghost.

Mike really is very sweet- natured. Many / most spouses wouldn't be so understanding of their other half's group of friends they couldn't communicate with but he doesn't make a fuss.

MartyHart · 28/08/2021 12:40

I really want to be Alison. I'd never leave the house

Those are awesome!! I love Pat so much.

dementedma · 01/09/2021 11:28

Love the series but the Captain's rank annoys me. He's a stiff upper lipped senior officer and should be at least a Major or higher...maybe a Brigadier.

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/09/2021 21:30

Can anyone tell me what age they have let their DC watch ghosts?

HenriettaBadger · 01/09/2021 22:38

Coveting mine is 8 and watching. There are some slightly risqué references that go over her head (we hope) but she loves them very much!

pinkflask · 02/09/2021 07:56

They do completely miss the innuendo BUT my 7 year old was really enjoying it until she started having nightmares about the plague pit people and then I banned it! I know they’re not in season 3 so I might let her go back to that later. 10 year old takes everything completely in his stride. We switched back to Horrible Histories instead and now they watch saying “there’s Pat!”

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/09/2021 08:05

My DS is 9 and I think he'd love it but my worries we're Julians character as I can't remember how much detail his back story went into, and the plague pit too.

They do seem to have toned this series down, to make it more family friendly.

It's one of the best things I've watched in recent years, it's both laugh out loud funny and touching, which is a rare thing to do well.

Bloodypunkrockers · 02/09/2021 11:00

I have to say there's a bit in episode 5 that I have to close my eyes at. Not sexy, but horror nightmares

I thought that Robin never quite got the hang of chess. I thought they showed Julian showing him how to play chess in the past, starting with the pawns. They then had an up to date scene where Julian was telling Robin that those were the pawns, again. Have I got that totally wrong?

I need to rewatch.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 05/09/2021 18:03

I think Robin just uses his own names for the pieces like Prawns and Lighthouse and even now poor Julian has to translate as he makes them go dooka dooka across the board.

PPCD · 06/09/2021 21:02

In the first episode of series 1 Robin says checkmate to Julian and Julian replies "fine, best of twenty". I think the implication is Robin is at least as good at him if not better.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 07/09/2021 09:10

I think Robin is much better. Must have had an excellent teacher.
