And, Serena is scapegoated for Fred's crimes and jailed so loses Nicole and her new baby, Said?

Saidtoomuch · 19/07/2021 13:28

Pretty much @vivariumvivariumsvivaria, he's slippery enough!

Horehound · 19/07/2021 13:30

Just watched it. Not impressed really. Ending was not believable in the slightest.

Janine will be alive, they won't have killed her off after killing off a few other handmaids recently. I too thought we saw her being helped away by someone.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/07/2021 14:12

Can anyone explain how Serena is pregnant after being shot in the uterus?!

How many escape attempts has June had now? From memory (someone who's watched earlier series more recently can probably give more info):

 1. the one when she tried to escape with Moira and Moira succeeded until she got caught and sent to Jezebel's
Punishment: whipped feet
 1. When she successfully escaped and went to that warehouse in early pregnancy. A economics and died helping her, and his wife became a hand maid and child given to a commander family. She got caught trying to get away on a plane
Punishment: none
 1. When she went to the lake house and saw Hannah - I think something happened to Nick that was never explained? She hid in the attic but then gave birth and was found, but she was technically missing as Serena and Fred came looking for her
Punishment: none
 1. When she went to escape with Nicole and Emily, but didn't
Punishment: can't remember but probably nothing
 1. When she escaped at the end of last season after putting the kids on the plane
Punishment: a slap in the face and sent to Magdalene colony
 1. Recent escape narrowly avoiding the human-splatting train.

I agree with others, I just can't believe that she wouldn't have been put on the wall now. I can only suspend my belief system so much

colouringindoors · 19/07/2021 14:12

The Fred and Serena thing is irritating me. Do the Canadians really have no idea of how Gilead works, and how it's men that have all the power? But I guess the irony of Serena taking the flak not Fred would fit within that theme!

On a tangent, where does the phrase "jumping the shark" come from?

Its90minutestonight · 19/07/2021 14:18

Moira told Emily she feels guilty about escaping when June is still in Gilead. Maybe, rather than June going to Canada, Moira will stay in Gilead.

Its90minutestonight · 19/07/2021 14:20

I'm sure Lawrence has a plan. Not sure what it is yet but I think he's a (flawed) goodie.

colouringindoors · 19/07/2021 14:21

Now that would be interesting (Moira) and good given so many handmaids are dead now.

I think Lawrence is mainly a disrupter

Freecuthbert · 19/07/2021 14:22

I don't think it was explicitly said that Serena was rendered infertile after being shot in the uterus. We don't know if the bullet actually went into the uterus even though it appeared that would be the case. To be honest though I do really enjoy this storyline being added into the mix. Though I do agree that it's ridiculous how invincible June is.

Iggi999 · 19/07/2021 14:24

Serena has no power in Gilead but she was part of the reason it was set up in the first place!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/07/2021 14:29

@colouringindoors Gilead is North-Korea style level of secrecy. When June and Janine turned up at the front Steven was shocked to find that Gilead had been keeping sex slaves

When June escaped when pregnant, when she was caught she was chained to a bed for a considerable period of time. I'd say that was a form of punishment.
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/07/2021 14:53

Oh, I just thought of something else that piqued my attention.

Before they left that bloke tried to get June to chat, he told her his name and she said she was called "not interested". Then they left but she was civil to him after Janine pointed out that she was being well, it was really just a #bekind speech.

Is he the first man who's been nice to her without exploiting her or wanting something from her since she got caught (so far, since Nick and her were at the Waterfords?)

Maybe he'll come back as a character. We are a bit short of nice blokes at the moment.

WitchSharkadder · 19/07/2021 15:27

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria I completely agree with your thoughts on Commander Lawrence. I do t think he ever cared for children, fertility or religion. He's an economist who went a bit power-mad building what he thought was this brilliant, innovative economy and now is pissed off that other Gilead 'ideals' are getting I the way.

He doesn't really have any emotional intelligence, only respect for others who are highly intelligent. He said as much to June when they were discussing Emily and why he helped her escape because she could contribute to the world (but obviously, as a woman, couldn't in Gilead). He only gained respect for June after she demonstrated she had some smarts.

Re June and escape attempts/punishments. I do agree mostly but I don't think the 'escape attempt' in the house when she gave birth counts. She didn't orchestrate that, Fred did. Yes she hid in the attic when the Waterford's came to find her but Fed would've made sure the out for a drive cover story was believed as otherwise it was his neck on the line not June's.

I think it's from the sitcom happy days where fonzie wind surfed over a shark!

Oh yes I remember now!

OnTheBoardwalk · 19/07/2021 16:06

Haven’t they confirmed that Fred isn’t the father of Nicole?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 19/07/2021 16:10

I'm sure they would have DNA tested Nicole

GoingGently · 19/07/2021 16:20

Maybe they've kept June alive because her escape antics are useful in showing them the weaknesses in their system... kind of like an ethical hacker. This is not a serious suggestion!

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 19/07/2021 16:25
@colouringindoors Gilead is North-Korea style level of secrecy. When June and Janine turned up at the front Steven was shocked to find that Gilead had been keeping sex slaves
I’m not sure. The way he said ‘I can’t believe there are sex slaves in America’ or whatever it was, I thought could just easily have been “I can’t believe…” . And then of course he showed himself to be just as bad.

Breathmiller · 19/07/2021 16:27

I quite liked this episode. I wasn't sure about there being another escape but I think it makes sense that June keeps going. She won't settle and accept any other life than being free and her loved ones being free. In fact I think she won't settle until Gilead has been brought down now.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 16:36

I think that they have or will test Nichole as that is part of the evidence to show that June and Nick had sex. The charges against Serena are that she basically had June raped by Nick which is beyond the Gilead rules and therefore the "crimes" the system is responsible for and she can hide behind e.g. accessory to the rape of June by Fred.

Freecuthbert · 19/07/2021 16:45

So about the whole Serena thing... I'm a bit confused. So are they saying Serena essentially raped June via Nick, or that Nick raped June and Serena was an accessory to that/facilitated it? I do understand that Nick and June had to have sex in order to produce a baby for Serena, but who is the rapist? Serena or Nick? June says the baby was born out of love and she obviously doesn't feel that she was raped by Nick, and it seems Nick didn't exactly have a choice either. Am I even making sense??

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/07/2021 16:45

I think her crime is that she essentially acted as a 'madam' to June forcing Nick to rape her

Freecuthbert · 19/07/2021 16:48

Is there a specific name for this crime? And could Nick get tried for rape if he went to Canada? Excuse my ignorance! Blush
