TV ads that really grind your gears...

Lighthearted and a chance to vent!

Right now for me it's the Dairy Milk icecream one (Magnum ripoff), where the kid is grating chocolate onto vanilla ice cream, and then pouring melted chocolate on it...an older guy (meant to be a brother or parent?) then gets two Dairy Milk ice creams out of the freezer and tells the kid he can have one after he's cleared the mess up. Tagline is "You already know blah blah blah"

Grinds my gears because it's just so stupid! Surely the kid would already know those ice creams are already in the freezer? When I was kid we knew exactly what was in the fridge and freezer at all times!

And the only thing I already know about Dairy Milk chocolate is that it's now vile...

Any ad for online bingo. That show people dressed up and ready to go 'out out', singing, dancing, having fun, with a crowd of mates, in the sunshine. What they never show is someone actually playing online bingo, sitting on their own or surrounded by children, indoors, bent over a screen, pumping money into a fools game.

zukiecat · 23/07/2021 12:35

That stupid Oooooooooooo one

I cringe for the actors in that.

I can't even remember what it's for, just annoys me so much.

Bibidy · 23/07/2021 12:47

My pet peeve for adverts is when companies hire a recognised celeb to present or do voiceover and then they keep talking about "we" do this and "we" do that...........like, I know Olivia Colman doesn't (normally!) work for M&S. The whole reason you've hired here is because we will know it's her......so why are we pretending she works for M&S?????

And breathe.

ChristinaRussell · 23/07/2021 13:09

@earminted

Co-op, 'It's what we do' . That voice!!!!!
I am SO glad someone else thinks this! I think they've re-recorded it recently because it's not quite as simpery as it was last year.
ChristinaRussell · 23/07/2021 13:21

The toothpaste one where a young woman with perfect teeth looks in the fridge and says "I know how to keep my body healthy, but how do I keep my teeth healthy?" Er, brush them, love?
I might say this to the tv every time it's on

The JanePlan one with one American woman - "It's so eezee? Everything is pre-prepared". Her voice/accent is like nails down a blackboard.

Winniewonka · 23/07/2021 13:41

Honestly, all of them. I've muted the sound when the ads come on weeks now. Don't get me started on how every ad now has to somehow incorporate the Olympics no matter how tenuous the link.
I think Aldi with the glam rock band on top of a bus with bonkers woman on a mobility scooter is probably the worst one.
Oh, and the one of the few non Olympics where two elderly ladies are at the seaside sitting on a bench with all sorts of wonderful seaside attractions surrounding them but they prefer to ignore all that to look at a smart phone that lets their faces be distorted and they howl with laughter. I presume the implication is No need to get on the pier and visit the hall of mirrors! Why just why?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 23/07/2021 13:56

There's one in which lots of different women dementedly gleefully show us their armpits 🤢🤮

Don't know what it's supposed to be advertising - and I've no wish to know, either.

MoreRainbowsPlease · 23/07/2021 19:25

I can't stand the verisure tv adverts. They are so contrived. Especially the one where it's 2 couples having a dinner party discussing how many houses get broken into when people go on holiday and how they really must get an alarm fitted. Argh!

Itstheprinciple · 23/07/2021 20:32

There's an advert for Ribena I think, where the man is distracted by being an artist with the berries or something equally ridiculous and the woman says 'Come on, we have to get these berries to the presser.' The way she says presser really irritates me.

lynsey91 · 25/07/2021 09:59

Just about every advert annoys me which is why I prefer to record programmes on the channels that show ads and fast forward through them.

The new McDonalds one though that is just lots of people laughing like total idiots is awful and really winds me up. I don't very often go to McDonalds but feel now like I will never go again

SirGawain · 25/07/2021 16:26

The Santander ads with Ant and Dec. I’ve always found these to stupid a and annoying. Makes me want to close my account.

I came on here just to mention these bloody adverts. So cheap, annoying and unrealistic. I wouldn’t buy one of their products now out of sheer principle.
LadyCatStark · 25/07/2021 17:01

The Innovo pants one. It doesn’t explain what hey are or what they’re for and it really pisses me off when they do the stamp!

Fernticket · 25/07/2021 19:36

The simpering woman on the Oral B advert, along with the equally simpering dentist.
Perf with Surf.
The Tena Lady ones, especially the last one featuring the skinny lady and the mini skirt.
ANY advert with Phil Schofield in it, he had gone right down in my estimation since he started doing them.
But the ones I hate the most are the Purple Bricks add with that stupid estate agent 🤮

ODFOx · 25/07/2021 22:29

There's a company that is aimed at 'men's issues' that has an advert for (presumably) viagra that goes:
'DONG DONG DONG DONG'
And another for a baldness cure that goes:
'DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR'
I do not get it and DH laughs and chants sling. It makes me shudder.

ODFOx · 25/07/2021 22:30

Chants 'along', not 'sling.'.

ahoyshipmates · 25/07/2021 22:43

Yep. And the latest one where they are chucking bricks around saying how cheap they are, and a woman says "They're basically sand."

No they're not, love. Bricks are made from clay.

Etihad · 25/07/2021 22:51

Another note about the Motability advert - sorry not read the whole thread, but it’s been on just now and I am still raging!!

It’s doesn’t show a single person in an actual wheelchair adapted vehicle.

It’s all people in cars (which I know they do, and have no problem with) However, it implies that their customers like my DD are just too ugly to be seen and associated with their company.

Which is nice.

QueenCarrot · 25/07/2021 22:58

@midsomermurderess

An Insurance one. 2 women driving cars singing 'I wish I knew what is is to be free' or something. It's an abomination. Screeching voices, unlistenable too. It must be muted instantaneously. So many ads seem obnoxiously loudly shrieking these days though.
That’s not for insurance, it’s about the motability scheme and features disabled people who benefit from the scheme.

The oooooo one is really annoying, it goes on so long

Etihad · 25/07/2021 23:02

‘That’s not for insurance, it’s about the motability scheme and features disabled people who benefit from the scheme’

Some of them Grin and it is shrieky, but that’s the least of my issues with it!!

butterpuffed · 26/07/2021 07:59

That Omaze ad where they're giving away a house worth zillions for free. It's the woman's voice that triggers me, sounds like she's trying to pacify a small child .

brokenbiscuitsx · 26/07/2021 11:24

The Santander advert where Ant and Dec talk about giving away a brick every month so that people will get on the property ladder (“have a shed in a week”) really insulting tbh especially from one of the industries that is making it hard for younger people to buy a first home. Quite gross actually.

Cheeseandlobster · 26/07/2021 15:02

The ITV drama one with screaming woman in a helicopter. It makes me rage and rage. The screaming is anger provoking

SeeYaBeYa · 26/07/2021 15:07

Those ones that aggressively flash a whole load of upper case words for penis up ending with ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION. There's a loud banging noise for each one and a bloke shouts the words as they appear onscreen.

Is it some kind of EDMR campaign to make men have ED and then buy the product?

Antiquestuff · 26/07/2021 15:22

The Vax advert ‘what does that mean?’
Angry
