Olly Alexander tipped to be the next Doctor Who ...

So says the Guardian. (Though they also say it might not be true!) Apparently he's highly supported by RTD.

Ho hum. I know he was good in It's A Sin - and he's young enough to be appealing to the target audience. But he's also probably too young for me to feel emotionally engaged in the character. Which would be a shame - I've watched almost from Dr Who's inception.

I think it’s time to call it a day. They aren’t going to bring back the glory days. I don’t know anyone who watches it any more TBF.

MayIDestroyYou · 27/06/2021 15:51

It needs immediate improvement in terms of show runner and current actors. The concept is still as strong as ever.

I'm nowhere on the cycle yet.
I think JW deserves a better script - and better companions.

Olly Alexander tipped to be the next Doctor Who ...

Although - between Misfits and The Nevers it does have serious new competition.

It's never who gets reported in the papers beforehand.

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 15:55

I think even the concept is a bit tired but I might be a bit weary of it due to age maybe.

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 15:55

That’s true. It’s like they pick names randomly.
nancy75 · 27/06/2021 15:57

I think they throw out names to put everyone off the scent

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 15:58

When it’s announced it’ll either be ‘who?’ or ‘nooooo’. Grin

SueSaid · 27/06/2021 16:12

Oh no. He was great in It's a sin, but character wise he just seemed to play himself (barring the dying bit). That awful writhing (lip synced?) performance at the Brits with Elton was just cringe.

I quite liked Dr Who in the Tennant and Capaldi days.

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 16:16

Yes I’d forgotten about the Elton John cringe thing. Leave It’s a Sin to the Pet Shop Boys please!

Cheguevarahamster · 27/06/2021 16:25

Loved him in its a sin. Thought he was excellent. I'd give him a chance but would prefer someone like David Harewood, Jo Martin or Charlotte Ritchie.

DinosaurDiana · 27/06/2021 16:34

It’s in the Mail too.
I don’t watch the programme, but he will be great. I’ve watched a few things he’s been in and he’s very watchable.

MayIDestroyYou · 27/06/2021 16:39

Had to look up Charlotte Ritchie - never seen her in anything so can't comment.

As Michaela Coel was never going to do it (Sad) I've lately been considering Laura Donnelly, who was perfection in The Nevers.

And I'm longing to see Joseph Gilgun in a tough, non-comedy role. (Apparently he was in a soap!) He was formidable in both Brassic and Misfits - he'd be a gorgeous, lost, damaged Doctor in the Matt Smith vein.

Hes definitely too young.

Just seems to be getting worse and worse with every new doctor

Too young and inexperienced. It's a sin was fantastic but every single character shone which made you wonder if the writing was more to do with its success rather than the ability of the actors.

Talking of writers isn't It's a Sin script writer the very same one from Dr Who.. there's a coincidence!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/06/2021 18:08

I miss Stephen Moffat's writing tbh, its never been as good since he left. RTD is good, but their combination was excellent!!

He wasn’t lip syncing, and he most definitely wasn’t play someone anywhere near himself in IAS
hazandduck · 27/06/2021 18:15

I love him! He’d make an exciting Doctor.

AGoatsbawhairaway · 27/06/2021 18:17

I think he would be good, Matt Smith was a few years younger when he started playing the Doctor, and he was fantastic!

FrippEnos · 27/06/2021 18:26

Unless they sort out the story lines and find a balance between what Dr Who is and was, its not going to work whoever they put in as the Dr.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 27/06/2021 18:28

I guess they’re after woke points.

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 18:30

I don’t think it’s true.

What do you mean by that?
