So says the Guardian. (Though they also say it might not be true!) Apparently he's highly supported by RTD.

Ho hum. I know he was good in It's A Sin - and he's young enough to be appealing to the target audience. But he's also probably too young for me to feel emotionally engaged in the character. Which would be a shame - I've watched almost from Dr Who's inception.

@JaniieJones

I think rather than c&p offensive comments it's best to report them?

Thanks for the link Simon.

See I watched that and I just see Ritchie Grin

Good luck to him and I'm sorry if I sound over critical but in interviews he does comes across as the same character from IAS and from an acting point of view I do think there needs to be other sides to people if you see what I mean.

MN usually allows comments like that to stand, so a lot of people have given with reporting.

@blaisealex

I'd still quite like Michael Sheen to be the next Doctor but I could also get on board with OA. Though, I really can't stand Chris Chibnall. The writing is pretty naff at the moment. And I don't like the erasure of the shows canon history. My favourite show runner was Moffat and I'd like to see the show return to a similar style of structure and writing to Moffat's era. I'm sort of loathe to watch it until Chibnall goes and I've mentally erased the last couple of series that he's been in charge of. Completing ignoring the timeless child stuff.
Sheen would be good, although I would like it if they continued to have female Dr Who’s, at least for a while anyway.
GrandmasNightgown · 27/06/2021 19:09

I saw tweets suggesting it would be Adrian Dunbar

I was looking forward to a Dalek saying 'no comment', a planet inhabited by wee donkeys and the search for bent cybermen

Maybe the wee donkey would be his companion. Hang on a minute, Dr Who is able to translate every language, so surely she could talk to a donkey?
OnWhatPlanet · 27/06/2021 19:11

Some of the comments online are sounding like when JW was announced and they couldn't stand the thought of a woman getting the role.

He has acted in more things It's A Sin, he doesn't only play roles that represent himself, nobody has to be a fan of him, we all like different things but the talk of "woke points" and looking perverted sound like it's an issue with his lifestyle rather than his talent for some people.

InteriorDesignerrr · 27/06/2021 19:12

@HidingFromTheChildren I’ve reported your post - homophobia isn’t a good look on anyone. What a thoroughly nasty and bigoted viewpoint.

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 19:12

I could get on board with DR Who again if it was a donkey TBF. Liven it up a bit.

SueSaid · 27/06/2021 19:12

It's been deleted already

Donkey from Shrek would make an amazing Dr

@MayIDestroyYou

Had to look up Charlotte Ritchie - never seen her in anything so can't comment.

As Michaela Coel was never going to do it (Sad) I've lately been considering Laura Donnelly, who was perfection in The Nevers.

And I'm longing to see Joseph Gilgun in a tough, non-comedy role. (Apparently he was in a soap!) He was formidable in both Brassic and Misfits - he'd be a gorgeous, lost, damaged Doctor in the Matt Smith vein.

Yes!! Did you watch this is England? He was incredible
lazylinguist · 27/06/2021 19:13

Thirty year olds really don’t look fifteen.

He's 30? Shock Well he doesn't look that much more than 15 to me, but maybe that's because I'm getting old. Grin There's nothing wrong with looking very young, and I have nothing against him (as I'd never heard of him until this thread). I just looked at pictutes and can't imagine him as Doctor Who!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 27/06/2021 19:15

I’m wondering if the name leaked beforehand is a ‘close but not quite’ or has a connection or gives a clue to the actual appointee.

Therefore I’m wondering if it might be Lydia West.

lynsey91 · 27/06/2021 19:15

I doubt it is true but, if it is, I would watch him. I like him and loved his duet with Elton John.

I am pretty sure he would be better than Jodie Whittaker (not difficult). She was dreadful but then I think she is a terrible actress

TrifleCat · 27/06/2021 19:16

I just hope whoever it is they change the writers because it’s been bloody awful since Peter Capaldi days. And I was excited about Jodie and she plays the Doctor so beautifully but my god the scripts are pure drivel.

lazylinguist · 27/06/2021 19:17

I'd love Michael Sheen to be the Doctor!

Ah Lydia would be wonderful, she was brilliant in Dracula
Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 19:18

I had to watch the duet with Elton John through my fingers. Couldn’t believe the pair of them were doing that to the Pet Shop Boys tune. Angry

MayIDestroyYou · 27/06/2021 19:18

@Winkywonkydonkey

I'd prefer to see Mizero Ncuti Gatwa
Interesting. Again, I had to google. He's so young! And I haven't watched any of Sex Education yet - can he do lonely, tortured hero?

(MNHQ have been quick today! Star)

'am pretty sure he would be better than Jodie Whittaker (not difficult). She was dreadful but then I think she is a terrible actress'

She was! Probably before the time of many of you but its like she was channeling Sue Pollard the cleaner from hi de hi.

Booming Carson from Downton would get my vote or Thomas the footman. I miss Downton Grin

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/06/2021 19:26

oh i am a joseph gilgun fan

CargoBobbie · 27/06/2021 19:39
@JaniieJones This is a good representation of what hes really like, just add in a few video games and a love of houseplants.
That's quite outdated and showing him as the shy teenager he was. He's come out of his shell a little more now he's 30 Grin
AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/06/2021 19:43

this is more recent www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p057nfy7/olly-alexander-growing-up-gay

@CargoBobbie He really hasn’t changed a lot since then, apart from his ear and better hair.

He's definitely a lot more outgoing now. More confident in himself.
In my opinion Smile

TheSpottedZebra · 27/06/2021 20:01

I read the comments in the Daily Mail, expecting they'd be brutal.

Not at all, most seemed very positive. My favourite comment was saying how polite he was on the Ken Bruce show (he was! I heard it and thought the same).

I think he'd be excellent: he seems quite playful and like he'd (pretend to?) have fun with all the promotional shite he'd have to do as Dr Who.
