Olly Alexander tipped to be the next Doctor Who ...

So says the Guardian. (Though they also say it might not be true!) Apparently he's highly supported by RTD.

Ho hum. I know he was good in It's A Sin - and he's young enough to be appealing to the target audience. But he's also probably too young for me to feel emotionally engaged in the character. Which would be a shame - I've watched almost from Dr Who's inception.

@lazylinguist

I'd love Michael Sheen to be the Doctor!
He would be amazing

Eh?

So predictable. Starting to get fed up of Olly Alexander. He is everywhere now, no escaping.

takingmytimeonmyride · 27/06/2021 20:45

I saw his performance with Elton John, which I wasn't too impressed with (maybe because I'm a huge Pet Shop Boys fan and love the original song too much) I didn't even know he was an actor who was in the TV show, so have no clue what his acting skills are like.

I've liked all the doctors. I did stop watching when Peter Capaldi was The Doctor, but that's mainly because it became the Clara show and i got fed up with her. I started watching again once she left.

Eh?

Sorry! I meant that I don't think willingness to engage in publicity should be of primary importance choosing an actor. Shouldn't it be all about how they'd embody the character?

I read that too. Loved Olly in It's A Sin and can see him in the Tardis just not alongside John Bishop - don't know why as we haven't seen what Dan is like have we?
Haven't seen much of series 12 - didn't Yaz have a crush on Jody?
As long as DW doesn't start using it as more of a woke agenda on pansexuality then I don't care who takes over the mantle...not because I'm against social issues/relationships but because it was quite refreshing to have for e.g. Catherine Tate not crushing on the Doctor at all. Even Rose did for me in the end. The only doctor rapport I have shipped was River and that was because of Alex Kingston.

Ah, got you! Apols.

I disagree, the publicity is part of the deal for this role. It's one of the bbc's biggest grossing dramas and they literally could mot afford to have someone who won't engage with all sorts of media occasions. So the actor, whoever it is, needs to be able to 'be' the role, plus be charismatic and willing to participate.

I am a massive Pet Shop Boys fan but I loved Olly and Elton's version.

I saw Olly sing with the Pet Shop Boys in 2019

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 21:42

The original version of It's a Sin is the best and should be sung by Neil Tennant only. No 'versions' allowed IMO. Don't spoil it.

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 21:45

Thinking about it-Neil Tennant can be Dr Who. Grin

MyShoelaceIsUndone · 27/06/2021 22:02

I’ll throw Idris Elba’s babe in the ring... ifs all fine quiet in the James Bond front so he may need some work

southeastdweller · 27/06/2021 22:06

He's OK but not a great actor. I expect they'll choose a BAME actor - maybe Richard Ayoade?

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/06/2021 22:13

his management have denied it

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/06/2021 22:14

i dont think it matters whether or not you liked him singing with Elton John though

Sparklingbrook · 27/06/2021 22:15

I’m not sure why we’re discussing him still TBF.

cosmopolitanplease · 28/06/2021 09:30

I would say I'd like to see Damson Idris in the role but then he wouldn't be able to do any more Snowfall.

MayIDestroyYou · 28/06/2021 12:02

Really, I thought I'd watched (streamed) TV non-stop this year - but there are so many names here I've barely heard of.

Anyway, it looks as if the Olly Alexander excitement has died down for now ...

As AbsolutelyPatsy says, his management has denied it. I think there’s usually all sorts of conjecture when the Doctor vacancy is open.
