My goodness, planning renovations with baby twins and other young kids, brave/daft?

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:09

Right, so a £60k budget tonight.

Any predictions for what it'll actually cost?

90,
Though I do think moving the furniture around and sorting the kitchen would sort most things out,

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:13

Dh and I were just saying that, jay. There's loads of space. They can't see how to use it.

OP posts:
Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:14

And why haven't they got the kettle and toaster in the kitchen?

OP posts:
jay55 · 06/10/2021 20:16

They've space for an island or another row of base units and worktop.

jay55 · 06/10/2021 20:17

Bench seating Gin

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:20

Drink!

This first design is so not in budget. Milton Keynes is going to be near on London prices for labour.

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:26

I really, really hate it when they show a lovely period property that's been stripped of all its character and turned into something out of an interiors magazine. I truly loathe the place they're looking round now.

OP posts:
jay55 · 06/10/2021 20:39

I don't think either designs work with two toddlers, as they'll have in no time. The gardens in both are not kid friendly.

Agree on the stripped out old places and I always hate the step down from an accessibility standpoint.

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:54

I think they chose the better design of the two, but I'm not massively sold on either.

100k!!!!

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:57

100k 🤦‍♀️

How, how do you find that much extra with four kids?

Halsall · 06/10/2021 20:59

And are those the twins who were tiny babies at the start?! How long has all this taken?

My thoughts exactly!

jay55 · 06/10/2021 21:01

I know Laura can't do every week, but I do feel she would have come up with good storage and a fancy utility room.

And I was Shockat the babies growing up.

EsmaCannonball · 06/10/2021 21:15

It's a bit unfair that the architect who paid some heed to the budget was the one who didn't get the commission.

Bench-seating guy is back next week!

RubyFowler · 06/10/2021 21:59

The second design didn't sort the hallway, so they had to go for the first option really.
But yeah agree, sometimes they just need better furniture and more interior design than actual renovation.

Squiz81 · 06/10/2021 22:30

We converted our garage to an entrance hall and it made a huge difference…but I do massively miss having a place to store bikes etc - with 4 children I hope they put in a decent shed!

absolutelynotfabulous · 07/10/2021 10:23

I thought the house looked fine before the renovation. Masses of space. Can't get why walking through the lounge to get to the kitchen is such a big deal.

Did I imagine the kettle in the utility room not the kitchen? Confused

The end result was lovely, but £100kShock. Hope the work has added to the resale value.

We didn't get to see the upstairs did we?

I prefer the more modest homes and budgets because they're more relatable, like the mother/son renovation featured in a previous episode.

Halsall · 07/10/2021 11:57

Did I imagine the kettle in the utility room not the kitchen?

Yes, that bugged me too! It was never explained but for some mysterious reason it ‘had’ to be in there Hmm

RubyFowler · 07/10/2021 12:29

They hardly had any worktop space at all. Even though it was quite a large room. It was a poorly designed kitchen to be fair.

EsmaCannonball · 07/10/2021 15:29

The end result was better but they could have saved themselves about £75 000 if they just decluttered, bought some shelving and storage, repurposed the existing extension as a snug, thought about the usage of the two spare bedrooms, reorganised the open-plan kitchen and living room space (as in the second design), and bought more kitchen units. I've got a reasonably big hall and, except when you're having furniture delivered, most of the time it's unused space. It felt like an expensive solution to a few small problems.
