Anyone watching? Bench Seat Man has gone!

OP posts:
SudokuMania · 15/06/2021 15:12

Did anyone else notice, at the end, that the dining table (which was too small for a family of five) kept changing orientation.

Didn't really like this one - still seemed quite cramped.

Lifeislikea · 15/06/2021 16:50

I hadn't noticed, but so it did!

It looked like the table from the dining nook so maybe smaller than they would like. But four chairs is daft.

I hadn't noticed that but I did notice that the dining table was tiny, especially for a family with young children who will grow to be big children.

@jay55

The recycling the kitchen and floor man, I'd love to see him solve a small problem, like they do on the garden version. Some of his ideas were mad but both his designs so far have tried to reuse materials creatively, so it would be nice to see that actually in action for someone on a real budget.
Yes I'd like to see that too!
RubyFowler · 15/06/2021 18:35

The dining nook was certainly cramped before but there was no need for the mother to climb over to the seat in the corner

I don't know why they wouldn't have had their dining table at the end of the lounge where they were drying washing etc. Much more room and there was already a hatch and everything!

RubyFowler · 15/06/2021 18:36

Its always a kitchen diner too. I know a PP said that earlier, but when this episode started I thought 'guess what, kitchen diner!'

Yes and used the nook for drying
JamMakingWannaBe · 15/06/2021 19:07

We were stung on this too. The builder quoted for build ONLY. The kitchen, flooring, decorating etc was all EXTRA.

Having never done an extension before - and never again - I remortgaged for the quoted price and it was only an inheritance which helped us with the rest.

I didn’t understand that either. Much more room and you could put up drying racks on the wall in that corner in the kitchen.
JamMakingWannaBe · 15/06/2021 19:10

∆∆ This.
She also said at the start she didn't want to knock through - then they did.

Buggerthebotox · 15/06/2021 19:30

I liked what they did to the garden but I'd be concerned about animals taking up residence under the decking.

I couldn't understand either why they didn't put the dining table at the end of the lounge in the first place.

And yy to the tiny dining table seating 4. And over budget again.

BruceAndNosh · 15/06/2021 20:11

There was such a big area under the deck they should have put some waterproof, rat proof storage crates under there.
Hated the colour of the kitchen, it was the colour of a Bandaid.

I suspect their dining table extends but they closed it up for filming

BunnyRuddington · 15/06/2021 20:47

Hated the colour of the kitchen, it was the colour of a Bandaid.

I was wondering what it reminded me of, so far I'd come up with putty or sickly blancmange.

I suppose it's a change from grey, judging by the houses for sake near me, I was beginning to think that grey interiors were compulsory. Don't think it was an improvement though.

BruceAndNosh · 15/06/2021 21:12

I did actually like the finished result - some couples slavishly follow the architects plan exactly with no input of their own, using the same colours etc.
Laura's kitchen looked very stylish but was quite short on worksurface. The final plan looked much more user friendly although i thought the radiator under the breakfast bar was odd.
They also dumped the reading nook and instead had a larger utility which I think is better for a young family, especially in Belfast where drying laundry outdoors is not frequently possible!

Couldn't understand why they had the TV half on and half off the chimney breast

covetingthepreciousthings · 15/06/2021 21:21

Does anyone else wonder if kitchen diners will fall out of fashion at some point?

I swear years ago they'd have probably been thought of as 'posh' in houses where as now everyone is getting one.

I agree. Ive never understood why people want to congregate in a potentially messy, noisy space. Especially with kids. But then, I dislike cooking and I'm generally a miserable antisocial bugger.

I'd much rather be slobbing out in front of the telly with a plate and a bib on... Smile

BruceAndNosh · 15/06/2021 21:44

I love a bit pf property porn, and looking at new builds in my area they only get a separate dining room at the very upper price bracket.
You can pay 1.5 mill and it's a kitchen diner!

JamMakingWannaBe · 15/06/2021 21:49

Did anyone catch how much the cork wallpaper was?

I thought it said £132/roll - in which case, I wonder why they didn't go with it...?

Buggerthebotox · 15/06/2021 21:58

I think the wallpaper was about that, yes. I thought it was hideous. Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 15/06/2021 22:01

I like the Cork wallpaper idea, but isn't it porous? And the architect planned for it behind the cooker, as a splashback? Surely not practical. And it would retain smells.

BruceAndNosh · 15/06/2021 22:05

Beach architect was all "lets stretch the tiny budget by reusing your old knackered kitchen and rip up your lovely parquet and stick it on the kitchen island" but also spent most of the budget on bespoke terrazzo flooring!
Laura's exposed brick pillars were very trendy but asking for grazed elbows with young children!

JamMakingWannaBe · 15/06/2021 22:21

Beach architect, "...and you'll be lifting the parquet flooring, cleaning it up, and sticking it onto the side of your bespoke kitchen island ... yourselves."

Couple: "Ain't happenin'!"

DH and I said that.....then agreed that it would have to be sealed with some sort of varnish, like you used to do with cork floors back in the day. Not really the chic look they had in mind, I don't think.

JamMaking, I thought it was more than £132 a roll but I could be misremembering. That was for the printed design, though. It was a lot less for plain (I think?).

I struggled to get on board with the beach one, the poly carb was horrendous.

She wanted a brand new kitchen not a rehash of her old one encased in poly carb. Think their faces said it all to be honest.

It was quite refreshing to see a proper lived in house but I would have had to do a mad 10 minute tidy before the cameras arrived, even if they'd told me not to.

Lifeislikea · 16/06/2021 08:40

I had a look on iplayer. The printed cork was £192 per metre Shock.

I suppose you'd just use a little as a feature but it wasn't to my taste anyway.
