Oh the absolute irony of the words of the character played by Dominic West in this trailer!! Wasn't he start shagging Lily James when he was filming this TV series???

This will be on BBC from 9th May - looks good.

Just trying this

AbsolutelyPatsy · 09/05/2021 22:34

Love Andrew Scott

Clawdy · 09/05/2021 22:34

The two girls looked far too old, though I realise they are going to get older, and that's a difficult one.

Forestdweller11 · 09/05/2021 22:36

I liked it. I liked the brashness and brightness. Think it captured the sadness and feelings of being trapped. It's made me want to re read the book.

SoupDragon · 09/05/2021 22:39

I enjoyed it.

Cottagepieandpeas · 09/05/2021 22:41

I liked it. Obviously quite different from the book. I really enjoyed the modern music, I think that worked well.
Loved the outfits!
I agree with pp who said both girls looked a bit old.
Highlight was Andrew Scott, he can do no wrong in my eyes!

EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology · 09/05/2021 22:42

I enjoyed it, but the music seemed deranged.

MaMaLa321 · 09/05/2021 22:42

I think there should be a law against writers/directors looking at the source, and saying 'fuck that. MY ideas are far more entertaining' and totally buggering the whole thing up.
Beyond awful.

FourteenthDoctor · 09/05/2021 22:44

Andrew Scott is the only gay man I've ever been attracted to - I love him Grin

UCOinanOCG · 09/05/2021 22:45

I might try and finish it tomorrow I so want to like it.

mermaidsariel · 09/05/2021 22:46

I switched off halfway through. It just seemed like more ridiculous nonsense full of dialogue that would never have happened .

Now Mitford’s fan girling over Hitler isn’t the worst thing about her.

Nancy Mitford wasn't a fascist. Diana was married to Mosley and Unity tried to kill herself after Britain declared war, she was a friend of Hitlers and was in Germany when war was declared. Decca was a communist who married her cousin and ran off to Spain to fight in the civil war. Nancy was a fervent anti-fascist and life long moderate socialist.

Nannyamc · 09/05/2021 22:49

Nah not for me switched off halfway through

LaMarschallin · 09/05/2021 22:49

I thought of Boris IcedPurple

I assumed we were supposed to.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/05/2021 22:49

I couldn't get into it at all and thought it was rubbish, DH loved it and thought it was amazing! Might have to give it another go next week

Dogmatix34 · 09/05/2021 23:02

I really liked it. Thought Linda and Fanny a bit old but probably better than casting different actresses for the younger versions

Maria53 · 09/05/2021 23:03

@Cottagepieandpeas did Lily James not say she was 29? Actually that cant be right for a coming out party!

How old are they in the book?

OpusAnglicanum · 09/05/2021 23:03

Love the book, hated this, for many of the reasons PPs have said already. Lily James was all wrong.

Plus, there were some very un-aristocratic table manners. Shocking.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/05/2021 23:04

@Serpenta

To be fair, it was Diana and Unity who were the fascism fans and Hitler lovers. I don't think Nancy was? (I may be wrong)
Nancy reported Diana and Oswald Mosley to the authorities as dangerous Nazi-loving traitors and they ended up in the Tower of London for much of WW2. I would imagine the authorities were already keeping a close eye on them but Nancy's letter must have added weight to the case against them.

I was looking forward to this but it sounds as if it's going to be a disappointment. Sad

In the book they go from very young (about 10 or 12?) to late 20s. Coming out happens at about about 18.

So I think they were supposed to be 16 to 19 ish in this episode.

That was said at the beginning during the war.
The story then went back in time to Fanny's first Christmas at Alconleigh, when they were mid- to late-teens.

Ilovelblue · 09/05/2021 23:14

I sat down to watch this as I saw some of it being filmed in Bath last September but fell asleep after about 15 minutes. I won't be bothering next weekend. Utter twaddle.

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/05/2021 23:30

@lollipoprainbow

I can't watch Andrew Scott without being reminded of Declan Donnelly !!
Someone said this on one of the Fleabag threads and I hadn't seen that until they pointed it out and can't unsee it now!
Ostara212 · 09/05/2021 23:44

@EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology

Andrew Scott does make everyone else look piss poor. How did he agree to be in this mess? Did he know it would be butchered with modern music?
I've only seen some clips on Twitter but I have often thought period drama would chime well with more modern music.

I didn't know Scotty was in it until I saw him trending on Twitter. Yes, we missed you!
