Stars Emily Watson and Denise Gough.

Cant say I know much about it, but hopefully it will be better than Intruder.

Please!

She is billed as a forensic psychiatrist ie a medical doctor who can prescribe medication, authorise section orders etc. She is assessing Connie before she goes for trial I think. Not sure a psychologist would be of any help to Connie.

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 14/04/2021 09:31

Yeah she is a psychiatrist not psychologist

clawdy Leah is Vanessa’s wife who left her in ep2. She’s a famous newsreader which I guess is why the doctor gossiped about her lorazepam use

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/04/2021 09:32

I'm enjoying it, so is DH who is normally ridiculously critical.

The parallels between Connie's and Emma's lives, and Connie's ability to read Emma are I think what is bringing them too close together.

dottiedodah · 14/04/2021 09:33

I thought last evenings episode was much better than the opener .Also could see more into the events behind Connies breakdown .Very well acted .Waiting for conclusion this evening!

the80sweregreat · 14/04/2021 09:38

Having had a dad who had all the dementia tests a few years ago , that bit with her mum was hard to watch.
Yes, the men are coming out of this badly !

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 14/04/2021 09:45

I bet, the80s :( I’ve not experienced it myself but the scene was so sad, I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that Thanks

I’ve found some of Connie’s comments quite poignant as someone with (different) MH issues. One in ep1 about not understanding how people function normally, and last night one about not being strong enough to ask for help when you lost need it.

I quite liked Paula which had Denise Gough in it. I bet she’s absolutely mesmerising in a dramatic stage role.

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 14/04/2021 09:46

Most, not lost

the80sweregreat · 14/04/2021 10:17

She is a good actress, so is Emily Watson.
She was good in Apple tree yard.

stumbledin · 14/04/2021 14:48

I am wondering if this was written as a stage play, and they sort of expanded what would have been dialogue between the two women into actual scenes.

I get muddled as i cant recognise the difference between the two husbands.

But is all very sad. Not really a thriller at all. Sort of saying marriage doesn't really work, unless you become an unfeeling automoton.

And also very sad about becoming old, as though everyone who is old will get dementia.

I think the point about the nurse asking about changing shifts is either to show that EW isn't being as professional as she should be. ie if it is her role to look after these things she cant just ignore someone lower down the food chain because you have become obsessed by a patient. Or that the nurse is going to throw some sort of scene or do something mean to Connie because of being ignored.

Well, I was sort of right about nessy but not in the way I thought.

It does have a stage play feel to it I think.

Arbadacarba · 14/04/2021 16:30

Struggling to sympathise with Connie, other than over her mum, whether or not driving over the bridge was her fault.

She brings up the subject of shagging other people so she can shag Ness, then when it turns out Ness isn't interested, gets pissed off that her husband does what she's planning to.

And what was she thinking with that professor - that he'd hang around on the back burner while she got married, just in case she might want some extra-marital sex?

She should have done some work (is she supposed to be a journalist?) rather than spent all her days smoking weed and ogling Ness.

the80sweregreat · 14/04/2021 17:01

I don't like Connie, if we're meant to feel sorry for her then I don't at all. Her husband is staying in touch , which is odd considering that their daughter is fighting for her life because of her actions ? I suppose there are other things going on we don't know about yet?

Arbadacarba · 14/04/2021 17:08

I suppose there are other things going on we don't know about yet

Things that are being set up:

The lorry driver - guessing he ran over Emily's child - he must come into the conclusion somewhere. Probably turn out to be Connie's brother or something.

The nurse who wants to work nights - what's she up to?

Ness and the husband (forget his name) probably in collusion over something to do with the bridge incident. Possibly they tampered with the brakes on the car to get Connie out of the way, but didn't realise she'd have the children in the car with her?

Just random guesses.

Clawdy · 14/04/2021 20:12

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble* thanks! I remember her now - very small role for that actress!

Forensic psychiatrists don't normally visit the same patient every day for days on end and with someone that unstable I'm surprised no-on sits in on the conversations. She'd have other clients and would have to have multidisciplinary meetings so she'd be meeting with the ward nurses etc not just swanning in and out and casually chatting to just Connie. If she's been charged and is in a hospital (the only reason there would be a nurse hanging around) then there would usually be a policeman watching she doesn't abscond, even in a psychiatric hospital. I missed at the beginning where she was supposed to be. With all the bruises I would have thought a general hospital initially but that looks less likely as she'd have been transferred by now. I think the nurse's night shift moans will become relevant today but it annoys me that they have decided that doctors, even freelance ones (we know Emily could have refused to take on Connie) are the bosses of nurses. It shows a lack of attention to detail and absence of research that makes me think the ending will also be implausible

Having worked in psychiatry, including forensic, I'd have to agree with all the above. It wouldn't take very much research to know this, so I'm puzzled as to why nobody bothered.

For this reason, I'm out.

the80sweregreat · 14/04/2021 20:31

I guess a lot of this is just ' poetic license'
Authors normally research all these things, so maybe the book is a bit more realistic?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/04/2021 20:50

I’m working tonight so won’t see till tom

Will avoid thread from 9pm

Last one tonight

stevematekatemate · 14/04/2021 21:34

The story just isn’t going anywhere.

Honeyroar · 14/04/2021 21:39

Really? It’s coming together for me.

Elephanttrunk · 14/04/2021 21:42

Anyone else finding it a hard watch? Her breakdown is just heartbreaking.

TheZeppo · 14/04/2021 21:43

I thought the earlier episodes were slow, but I think Denise Gough is outstanding tonight.

20questions · 14/04/2021 21:43

So achingly bad, it's cringeworthy.
This is entertainment??

the80sweregreat · 14/04/2021 21:45

It is a tough watch isn't it? Very surreal.

Honeyroar · 14/04/2021 21:45

@Elephanttrunk

Anyone else finding it a hard watch? Her breakdown is just heartbreaking.
It made me feel sorry for her poor dad having to deal with that straight after burying his wife.
