Stars Emily Watson and Denise Gough.

Cant say I know much about it, but hopefully it will be better than Intruder.

Please!

I thought it was so effective and so shocking and so incredibly sad
I cried so much

Fed up with dramas that don’t give a proper ending. What was Connie’s sentence? Was she going to be in the unit for a short or long time? The ending seemed rushed and not to hear a verdict was a cop out. If I spend time viewing then I expect a conclusion.

stumbledin · 15/04/2021 14:39

So this wasn't in any way a thriller.

This was a campaign dressed up as drama saying that more care needs to be given to people put on medication, ie not just pills but support and so on. (Cant rmember the name of the actress who played the Doctor but the implication was she would be investigated.)

It was about 2 parrallel stories showing how close we all are (or women with multiple demands on their life are) to going over the edge. ie Abigail being killed was because of a mother worn out by lack of sleep etc.. Conne, not remembering what had happened, just challenged EW character as she just thought you are no better than me, and by projecting her problems onto EW in fact hit a nerve.

So the bit in the tree and other implausibilities were to show they were two sides of the same coin.

Not sure what Connie's sentence actually was, but would seem the explanation of total withdrawal from all drugs was the problem - and all the people who should have cared for didn't recognise the impact of her mother's death and her husband's affair. (Although by the end I wasn't sure if Nessa having an affair with Connie's husband actually happened or was part of the drug induced hallucinations.) And was not serving time in a prison but some sort of facility until she was deemed stable enough to be released.

But overall very depressing about women of a certain age losing any sense of themselves, unempathetic husbands, patchy NHS care, the worry of caring for children, and ... .

I definitely think it should have not been billed as a thriller and possibley come with a warning. Not so much the driving of the bridge as we see far worse in crime dramas, but whether some of it might have been quite triggering for some.

Both the little girls survived, Emma told Connie at one point. And all the recaps say they were fine by the end. But Connie's son was not happy with her, and it looked as if her marriage was over too.

2Rebecca · 15/04/2021 15:59

I suspect many of her withdrawal effects were due to alcohol rather than the lorazepam. Visual hallucinations especially of insects are more classical of alcohol withdrawal rather than benzos. The GP shouldn't have given her lorazepam which is known to be very addictive but it wasn't all her GP and husband's fault.

needadvice54321 · 15/04/2021 16:09

I loved it! DH wasn't so keen..

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/04/2021 16:18

To me Connie and Emma seemed like flip sides of the same coin, showing how easily lives can be shattered and fall apart.

Arbadacarba · 15/04/2021 16:42

(Although by the end I wasn't sure if Nessa having an affair with Connie's husband actually happened or was part of the drug induced hallucinations.)

I concluded it was genuine, because otherwise why would Polly have been staying over at their house?

Also, she hadn't started hallucinating at the funeral when Nessa sent that fairly damning text to her husband.

I wonder if it was intentional that both husbands looked the same, although different ages? Or just a consequence of so many men going for that generic beardy look nowadays?

I also wondered if Nessa copying Connie's perfume and tattoos meant she'd clocked her husband very early on and was doing this to attract him, not, as Connie thought, because she fancied her.

The clue is in the drama's name "Too close" (for comfort). It could have easily been situation reverses.

This

Could be any of us

stevematekatemate · 15/04/2021 21:45

I get why they called it too close but I was completely underwhelmed. I thought the acting was dreadful with the exception of a few better moments last night. It was long and drawn out and I didn’t think it was a thriller. Sorry but 3 hours I won’t get back as they say.

dogsdinnerlady · 15/04/2021 21:47

Do we know how they all got out of the car or who rescued them? The water was very deep and the car sank quickly. I think it's hard to open car doors once water pressure builds up outside.
I thought the copout explanation for Emma's husband's 'affair' was very cliched. Would you really conclude an affair from what she saw or at least challenge him about it?

stumbledin · 15/04/2021 23:21

Just came back as I was embarresed not to remember Nina Wadia's name.

In fact quite a few of the smaller parts were played by people with a high reputation.

I wonder if they thought it was going to be a real water cooler event.

I think details such as how did they all get out of the car were just glossed over as it was more about making points dramatically.

Even if the car behind her that Connie reversed into had immediatly phoned 999 could they have got the right rescue team there. I suppose one could just has happened to be close by.

Does anyone know where that bridge is? I never seen anything like that!

Just to answer my own question the bridge is Kingsferry Bridge.

And most of the scenes were filmed in the now closed Holloway Prison!

Was just about to say Kingsferry bridge near me Kent/Isle of Sheppey

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 15/04/2021 23:31

I just finished watching the intruder. Good lord. I tried to find something good to say about it, I really did. 😳😂

I'm the same. Very underwhelmed. I wasn't convinced by any of it.

Blondes squints eyes.

Do I know you

You are my area

Blankscreen · 16/04/2021 09:51

I thought it was a load of crap as a thriller.

It was about a woman having a breakdown and should have been billed as that.

I also don't think the children would have survived the fall into the water, but that would have fitted so well with the story or having a second chance with the correct treatment.

RaraRachael · 16/04/2021 12:05

We gave up on if after half an hour which is 30 minutes less than we lasted with Intruder Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/04/2021 12:07

It wasn't really a thriller at all was it?

stumbledin · 16/04/2021 14:37

Off topic!

Never having seen Denise Gough before (didn't know she ws Irish) I saw her last night in the film Collette via BBC (a really horrid story dressed up as costume drama) and it had Eleanor Tomlinson in and I spent most of the film thinking where have I seen her before!

Bridge - it looks really monumental, does it dominate the landscape? What happen when the lift function breaks down half way?!!

What a load of old tosh. Terrible script, utterly unbelievable and hammy acting.

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2021 14:46

I've been to the Isle of Sheppy as a child, but I don't recall this bridge at all.
Dh said he has been over it before.
Looks a horrible structure and dangerous too.

theliverpoolone · 16/04/2021 16:52

I didn't think Denise Gough was hammy, I thought she was amazing. I bet she's great on stage. I think she did a good job with a hammy script.
