Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

@Maggiesfarm

I didn't know Reggie was Den Watts's son! His dad would be proud. Reggie is a lovely character, I hope we see a bit more of him this series.

I also want Patsy and Delia to return but the producers don't take much notice of me. Anyway Patsy was busy playing Camilla Shand/Parker Bowles in the Crown.

Patsy is too busy writing and producing stuff and being nominated for oscars.
LaBelleSauvage123 · 22/04/2021 23:00

I found episode 1 very stilted. All those shots of people talking to one another taken from behind one of the pair - surely there are other ways to SD? Cyril and Lucille’s dancing was cringeworthy. Agree with the comments about Trixie - I also think posh new mum is going to die and she will get together with Hugh Grantesque dad - he was given far too much air time to be just a passing character. The nuns fashion show - just no. The woman who lost her baby was a good character though.

desperatehousewife21 · 23/04/2021 20:58

The shoe horned in ‘2 scoops of Nescafé’ Hmm who says that?

The posh dad really did look like Hugh Grant didn’t he! Grin could def see Trixie with someone like him.

In all honesty though I did not even notice it was filmed SD. The mum who lost the baby wasn’t distanced from the dad tho? So maybe there were bubbles for filming certain scenes.

Maybe people did then. Poor-ish people always had instant coffee of varying quality, you wouldn't expect nuns to have anything too sophisticated. Sis Julienne obviously wanted a caffeine kick!

In a previous series I remember Nestle's tinned cream being put forward as a treat :-), does that even exist now?

Rockbird · 24/04/2021 01:01

They've specifically mentioned Nescafé since day one. It's always been presented on there as something a bit special.

SheldonesqueTheSecondComing · 24/04/2021 01:28

I fear that Lucille and Cyril are going to be awfully disappointed on their wedding night if the dancing is anything to go by.

Please god they won’t rely on the rhythm method as there was no rhythm there.

They were dancing like they were wearing clothes made for 12year olds.

I can bust better moves than that and my area of expertise is the squaddie two step.

You would think Trixie would be a bit of a catch. All the pointers are there to suggest it. So it must be something we cannot see.

I reckon she absolutely honks of foushty clothes which haven’t dried properly and can knock suitors out at 5 paces.

I’ve had people cross the street rather than acknowledge what had happened.

The soap bit was the bit that tipped me.

SMJ had better find her faith. Or gin.

ferryblue · 24/04/2021 04:04

I wonder how/when they’ll end CTM? With SMJ’s death? They’ve covered pretty much every weekly story they can do I think, and they are well info the 60s now and the midwives will be quickly becoming obsolete with the rise of hospital births.

Maggiesfarm · 24/04/2021 06:06

It does depict a particular era within which there were many changes, in a rather deprived area. The series will come to a natural end but is very charming while it lasts.

Itwasjustresting · 24/04/2021 07:02

Apologies to those who don’t like Daily Mail links but this is a nice piece about the actual nuns Jennifer Worth worked alongside - it says they left Poplar in 1978 and moved to Birmingham.

Nuns in 1980s Birmingham would be quite the series!

Maireas · 24/04/2021 08:35

Bless you, Sheldon - the squaddie two step and foushty clothes!! GrinGrin
I'm crying here! Who knows about Trixie? She's about 40 now, surely? I find her voice too irritating.

diddl · 24/04/2021 09:19

"You would think Trixie would be a bit of a catch."

For whom though?

listershologram · 24/04/2021 09:49

I hope it's a normal episode and not the case notes which wasn't at all good.

SheldonesqueTheSecondComing · 24/04/2021 10:04

Och I don’t know diddl. Maybe folk think she is out of their league with the blonde and the clipped tones.

You’d think auntie mimi (or whatever she’s called) in Portofino would have had her spliced with an Italian chap by now. A doctor might have snapped her up.

I reckon she has something negative going on like the foushtiness. Unless she wears eau de fuckrightoff and her tights have spikes on them.

I do speak shite of course. But if Shelagh the nun can snag herself a doc...

SheldonesqueTheSecondComing · 24/04/2021 10:05

And aye, I know it would all be different nowadays and no one would bat an eye Wink

As it should be.

diddl · 24/04/2021 10:20

Trixie is a bit of a contradiction isn't she?

Well spoken, well dressed & I suppose the blonde hair is supposed to look glamourous?

But to me it looks Bet Lynch barmaid!

(Showing my age there)

So great fun & a "heart of gold" but not marriage material to some men?

Maggiesfarm · 24/04/2021 10:25

She is a nice young woman, I've met people like her. She isn't 'brassy'. Nobody is 'marriage material' to all men, the dentist would have liked to marry her but she felt he should go back to his ex wife for the sake of his daughter (if ex wife was on MN, we'd be telling her to LTB!). She was also engaged to the curate at one time.

Hopefully the new series will produce a new man; or Trixie could find another path to fulfilment. Don't forget, she did surgery in South Africa and was left in charge of the clinic for several weeks while the doctor recovered.

SheldonesqueTheSecondComing · 24/04/2021 10:32

Bet Lynch is not a stranger to me. Grin

She stands out with the posho clothes and the blonde - everyone else seems very much lass next door in comparison.

She sticks out like a sore thoomb.

But the good thing about her singledom is that she clearly has standards. She would have been a magnet for spivs and gangsters.

diddl · 24/04/2021 10:36

Oh yes I'm not saying that she's not nice-just like a lot of people-not everyone's cup of tea.

Perhaps she'll marry & keep her career!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/04/2021 10:38

Maybe she puts men off by being too competent?

(Was the sixties still the wives should stay at home era?)

I suppose it might have depended who you married?

Some women had to work & there must always have been those who worked because they wanted to!

I agree. To paint with a very broad brush I suspect the kind of man who would be attracted to her wouldn’t want an intelligent woman.
cheapskatemum · 24/04/2021 23:31

It was the reference to "due diligence" early on that got me. Surely to goodness that wasn't a thing in the 60s, when there didn't even seem to be any Health & Safety.

JackieLavertysWeirdVoice · 24/04/2021 23:48

I want Trixie to go to medical school now.

BackforGood · 25/04/2021 00:10

Alternatively, I'd love follow up to some of the previous stories. Did the Spanish woman have more babies? How are the disabled babies? The blind mother...did her sister help her cope?

I often think this. How is it that none of the families involved in the 'big story lines' ever have another baby, and those individual babies are never seen again ?

I agree the Nun's fashion show was just ridiculous.

I didn't notice any social distancing ruining the show though.

.....

I don't think she does put men off, she just hasn't yet met the right one and indeed she may not. There could be other things in store for Trixie.
