Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

The most talented actor on it is Daniel Laurie, he absolutely blows me away.

RoseMalone · 21/04/2021 15:49

Can anyone remind me why Nurse Valerie left. I can't remember.

Pyewackect · 21/04/2021 15:53

They weren't just midwives, they were district nurses.

I love Call the Midwife, but forgot it was starting this week, so missed it.

I am an oldie, and love seeing all the clothes from yesteryear, as I have mostly worn all the same types of styles over the years, as I was born in the 1940 era..

Her gran died and she went to the place in Africa to get away

I absolutely love Call the Midwife, so happy it's back on TV. A shame each series is so short though, only 7 episodes this time, why can't we have more? Also, come back Chummy!!

Rockbird · 21/04/2021 18:09

Timothy was meant to be 11 in series 1, the girls are a lot younger. I have my suspicions that May was brought in to keep Angela on side. The girl who plays her seems very shy and possibly they thought she'd be more forthcoming with a friend.

Vikingintraining · 21/04/2021 20:07

Just reading back through some comments saying the programme isn't as good as it used to be and I agree. I think it's fallen victim to being a popular series that the TV makers then drag out to keep it running when sometimes it's better to end on a high. There's also a noticeable change in dynamic I feel, from the earlier series' that were based on real life memoirs, and the later series' that were purposely written. In the later ones when the true-life stories ran out the characters change, too much happens for the sake of drama. In real life both Trixie and Cynthia got married, well now fictional Cynthia is a nun so that won't happen. I still enjoy watching it, as a true life east-ender it's nice to see my home area talked about on TV. I do think an end should come in the near future though. The nuns left Poplar in the 1970s for Hastings so perhaps we should switch to Call-the-Midwife-on-sea.

I still adore this program. It was always a tonic seeing me through January and February, it’s a shame it’s delayed this year but at least it’s on!

I do think maybe it’s time for Sister MJ to go to the big mother house in the sky. And for gods sake please give Trixie a lovely uncomplicated handsome and financially comfortable man, no more hunky wholesome vicars or weekend dad dentists.

A cameo from Chummy would be appreciated, maybe she could have inherited her father’s fortune and save Nonnatus house once and for all so we can drop the never ending threat of closure that’s been looming since Jimmy was an aspiring young architect.

Maggiesfarm · 21/04/2021 23:29

I would like to see Cynthia again. She was so ill and now she isn't even mentioned.

Rockbird · 22/04/2021 07:02

Miranda Hart pissed them off so I'd be very surprised if she came back.

Oh, that’s a shame. I did wonder why Chummy is never spoken of these days! I wasn’t always fond of the character but I think some of her storylines highlighted the darker side of how we relate to our own mothers.

Oooo what did she do?
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/04/2021 07:50

When Sister MJ does pass on I would love them to bring back all the midwives... Jenny, Patsy (plus Welsh girlfriend). Cynthia, Chummy... And the Nun ones. Tom. The police officers.

Alternatively, I'd love follow up to some of the previous stories. Did the Spanish woman have more babies? How are the disabled babies? The blind mother...did her sister help her cope?

MagicSummer · 22/04/2021 07:51

A lot of you seem to dislike Dr Turner - not sure why, as I really like him! My father was a GP in the 60s and this IS what is was like. Doctors were far more involved with their patients, you rarely saw a 'strange' Doctor unless it was a locum for a holiday, and they didn't spend all their time tapping on a computer keyboard! It was much more personal and they really did research into an unfamiliar condition!

RoseMalone · 22/04/2021 08:05

For me it's that I don't think he's a good actor, unlike all the others.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/04/2021 08:10

He's an engaging person on Twitter, but no, he's not the best actor. However, being married to the series creator, executive producer and sole scriptwriter probably ensures he will never, ever be written out. Grin

I find him quite convincing as Dr Turner. I saw a bit of Classic Emmerdale earlier and he was in that with a Yorkshire accent (he was good looking too), so he is quite a good actor. However he is a scientist, writes and lectures.
Rockbird · 22/04/2021 09:47

He's blocked me on Twitter for disagreeing with him so I think he's a twat Grin.

Miranda Hart decided literally days before filming started that actually she wasn't going to come back. Led to a huge rewriting and rethinking of the whole series at the last minute. Let's just say they weren't best pleased Grin

RoseMalone · 22/04/2021 15:18

That's OK Maggiesfarm. We can agree to disagree Smile

Just read that he's Leslie Grantham's son!
woodhill · 22/04/2021 17:56

It's the lack of music that irritates me. In earlier series there was often a hit in the year of the series as background like a music video, so good but now there is some drivelling rubbish instead

Maggiesfarm · 22/04/2021 18:40

I didn't know Reggie was Den Watts's son! His dad would be proud. Reggie is a lovely character, I hope we see a bit more of him this series.

I also want Patsy and Delia to return but the producers don't take much notice of me. Anyway Patsy was busy playing Camilla Shand/Parker Bowles in the Crown.

He is a cheeky sod for blocking you.

@YouWerePrettyIWasLonely

I remember that episode with bathing the children who were neglected and then the sent them to Australia on the child emigration programme where they faced more neglect and abuse. Heartbreaking.
I sobbed for ages at that episode. Some get to me more than others & that was one of them.
