Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

I was quite moved by the whole placenta thing, tree roots, my body being the roots of the tree of my children's green shoots, all part of the universe/nature, god's plan etc but tbh I have had Wine

Maireas · 09/05/2021 21:07

I think you're right, @RoseBearx. Maybe Turner is a tolerant and forward looking man, it's just that I find it all a bit much that he's a social justice warrior every week.

Emmelina · 09/05/2021 21:08

@Sunbird24

Anyone else got the fear for Sister MJ? I’m worried that she’s not longer for our screens now that she’s refound God…
Sister Evangelina was the same. Went off to the motherhouse to find herself/God again, came back and was gone within a handful of episodes.
hopscotchz · 09/05/2021 21:09

@RoseBearx totally agree! It defeats the purpose, he’s so annoying that I keep rolling my eyes every time he bloody speaks!

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 09/05/2021 21:11

So glad to hear of football and rugby loving nuns! 🤣 Not so sure about Dr Turner and his liberal views.....especially when the young lad in question is only 17?? Even when it was decriminalised, it was only for men over 21 wasn't it? Very pleased to see Sister MJ looking happy again though😀

woodhill · 09/05/2021 21:12
@SoupDragon. I think it’s the way he’s written to express his opinion that doesn’t feel authentic rather than the views he holds. It feels like the BBC is using the character to preach to us about current issues, and it’s not subtle at all. It’s very THIS WEEK’S PREACHING TOPIC IS HOMOSEXUALITY EVERYBODY, NEXT WEEK IT’S MENTAL HEALTH and they are using the character of Doctor Turner as a vessel for it. It affects the immersion of the programme IMO.
Definitely and I'm not convinced that the team would be always so modern thinking

Just not feeling the love - so obvious that the pupil midwife was going to deliver the baby.

My friend’s mother reacted as the young boy’s mother when her brother said he was gay. She never accepted it. His father did as he had guessed but his mother never. I’m going back more than 45 years. So sad.

Maireas · 09/05/2021 21:15

My aunt and uncle never accepted my cousin being gay. In 1987.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/05/2021 21:15

In a previous series, Dr T was sending a gay man for conversion therapy. So he wasn't that progressive. Missed most of it as at work.

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 21:17

How was the nanny old enough to have been the handsome widowers nanny?

Me too. But then I've found God's love, and beauty in some unexpected places.

Didn't Dr T only send that lad in the previous series for hormone treatment because he had to? It wasn't his choice. Maybe his past experiences with that kind of "treatment" would have changed his opinion. And someone had to disagree with "gay = wrong" or the laws would never have changed.

@Maireas I know people now who's parents wouldn't accept them being gay. In 2021 :(

Sunbird24 · 09/05/2021 21:22

Future episode: Timmy Turner gets together with Michael Leeks 🤔

dotty12345 · 09/05/2021 21:22

I was born in the 60's and my mum and dad had friends who I called Uncle Alan and Uncle Dennis, we used to all go on holiday together, was many years after I realised they were gay but clearly my parents knew and didn't judge.

Now that would be interesting.

Funnily enough when the scene cut from Michael (was that his name? Shows how much attention I was paying) to Timothy I thought then... hmmm... maybe Timmy is the boyfriend.

I thought this. In the future maybe...

I can't imagine Tim not going to med school but the way they're building it up makes it seem that there's going to be a hiccup.
Maybe he'll turn rebellious in time for the Summer of Love Grin

eggandonion · 09/05/2021 22:07

My daughter reckons he will become a nurse and midwife, and the daughters will be doctors.

TopBlogger · 09/05/2021 22:09

Even my teen dcs were Hmm at the Dr and parents being so "woke" - their words. As if after a couple of days the parents would be "yes son, you're only 17 but off you go doing something that'll land you in prison and subject to vile abuse there". Ridiculous writing.

And MJ, well she really needs to get a better script's if looking at a placenta answers her prayers

Maggiesfarm · 09/05/2021 22:16

Placentas have great spiritual significance.

Maireas · 09/05/2021 22:19

A bigger issue about the young man was surely that he was prostituting himself, not just in relationships with men.

Yes! He will have failed his A levels. He said "all I have to do is pass my a levels...".

Mind you, this is Call the Midwife rather than Eastenders so he has probably passed with flying colours.

GreenClock · 09/05/2021 22:44

It’s definitely lost a lot of the grittiness and realism but i am still a fan. Great acting from the actors portraying the young gay man and his parents.

Social distancing is highlighting the lack of chemistry between Lucille and Cyril. I like both actors but they’re wrong together.

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 22:45

Well I thought so too. But that was barely mentioned.

I hate in any series or film when the characters have views that would have been greatly at odds with the views of the time but right by today’s standards.

Optimist1 · 09/05/2021 22:54

Why didn't Fred win the accumulator? I heard him say something about trying to be clever, but didn't quite get the sense of it.
