Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

Of course the yay kids are the only ones dressed up as mascots, when did Sheila find time to make those?

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 09/05/2021 20:44

The yay kids 😂

MynameisJune · 09/05/2021 20:44

Yes Ladycatlover, I’ve just come here to find this comment. It’s so unbelievable, along with the kids parents.

whatsthestory123 · 09/05/2021 20:49

omg freds 1k would be worth approx £16k

jay55 · 09/05/2021 20:50

It is lovely to have Reggie back.
And I love the pregnant woman's green mac.

RoseBearx · 09/05/2021 20:51

@LadyCatLover2. I agree, they’ve turned him into some kind of expert on wokeness. He just isn’t true to his time.

Maggiesfarm · 09/05/2021 20:51

@theresnoonequitelikegrandma

I know it's the World Cup but....nuns watching football? 🤣🤣
Oh yes! I boarded at a convent school for two years and some of them were mad about football on TV. The Head even had a rattle she swirled around when anyone scored a goal.
Nannewnannew · 09/05/2021 20:52

Homosexuality became legal in men over 21 in 1967 so only a year after this episode portrays, so it is possible that some Drs would have been more accepting.

RoseBearx · 09/05/2021 20:54

BBC has always loved making current issues prevalent in their dramas through the characters, but it’s bloody stupid to do it in a period drama by having a character incredibly woke about issues that were taboo and rarely discussed in that time. Dr Turner will be giving his opinion on Brexit and gender neutral bathrooms next.

Sunbird24 · 09/05/2021 20:54

Sister MJ regains her faith from a placenta… Sure, why not 🤷🏻‍♀️

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 09/05/2021 20:55

A nun at our church is mad about rugby!

SoupDragon · 09/05/2021 20:55

I also thought his speech about mental health last week a bit stretching

He did suffer a breakdown though so has a personal understanding of mental health issues.

hopscotchz · 09/05/2021 20:55

Placenta on the table, nice! Confused

Maireas · 09/05/2021 20:56

It was still regarded with shame and disgust, unfortunately the 1967 law did not mean acceptance. Maybe Dr Turner would have been progressive, but he's doing this every week and it's getting a bit improbable.

Maggiesfarm · 09/05/2021 20:57

@LadyCatLover2

Is it just me who finds Dr Turner unbelievable? They're trying to insert today's 21st century values and beliefs into a period drama set in the 1960s. I just don't think Many doctors would have openly said 'there's nothing wrong with homosexuality' in a time when it was still illegal...

I also thought his speech about mental health last week a bit stretching. Mental health was not well understood in those days, hell there was still a fair amount of stigma 10-20 years ago.

I think you are right about that but there were probably some people who were more enlightened about homosexuality in the 1960s and 1970s. Dr Turner is a GP and ex army, who has seen practically everything going and knows more about human issues than a layman would.

In an earlier series there was an episode about a young, homosexual man (married), and the only way he stayed out of prison was if he subjected himself to hormone treatment, which Dr Turner had to administer. It was awful. Later on there was an older man, a cinema projectionist, who had a male 'friend'.

When I think how things were back in the day, when I was a child and before that, I feel ashamed that people like homosexuals were so persecuted. Alan Turing is an example of that.

SoupDragon · 09/05/2021 20:58

Awwwwww!

Maggiesfarm · 09/05/2021 20:58

Aw! Cyril proposing.

RoseBearx · 09/05/2021 20:59

@SoupDragon. I think it’s the way he’s written to express his opinion that doesn’t feel authentic rather than the views he holds. It feels like the BBC is using the character to preach to us about current issues, and it’s not subtle at all. It’s very THIS WEEK’S PREACHING TOPIC IS HOMOSEXUALITY EVERYBODY, NEXT WEEK IT’S MENTAL HEALTH and they are using the character of Doctor Turner as a vessel for it. It affects the immersion of the programme IMO.

Emmelina · 09/05/2021 21:00

Ohmygosh.

Sunbird24 · 09/05/2021 21:00

Anyone else got the fear for Sister MJ? I’m worried that she’s not longer for our screens now that she’s refound God…

SoupDragon · 09/05/2021 21:01

I think she will shuffle off this mortal coil in the final episode. Quietly, in her armchair, we will see her nod off and drop her cup of tea.
CaptainMyCaptain · 09/05/2021 21:02

@Maireas

Sadly, being gay was still widely regarded as a sin and a wilful perversion. Dr Turner was well ahead of his time. I've read of very tragic cases where such men never got treatment for fear of repercussions.
He can't have been the only person thinking that way. It was legalised the following year following a long campaign.
Maireas · 09/05/2021 21:03

@hopscotchz

Placenta on the table, nice! Confused
I thought she was going to eat it
Maireas · 09/05/2021 21:04

Cyril proposing was sweet. He's lovely, but I find Lucille strangely hard to warm to.

Taswama · 09/05/2021 21:05

I thought it was an issue as he was under 21, then realised it was completely illegal back then.
Still, my first thought was it was another story revolving around a man. And I've always liked CTM as it centres women.
