Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

I also thought the homosexuality situation didn't ring true. I don't buy Dr Turner as accepting. But also, the young lad suddenly waxing lyrical about 'what I'm attracted to'? Bullshit.

I agree that Phyllis sounds much more natural in her reaction - not judgmental, but realistic about the dangers while clearly having no moral issue with homosexuality. She's such a great character.

@Optimist1

Why didn't Fred win the accumulator? I heard him say something about trying to be clever, but didn't quite get the sense of it.
The final bet was Germany to win.

What happened to the curate who came to stay?

JanFebAnyMonth · 09/05/2021 23:25

The other thing which is absolutely wrong in the portrayal of lucille’s relationship is the fact that she spends vast amounts of unchaperoned time with him - when this series started I first of all thought they’d married in the interim!

Even today Christians who are members of a black evangelical church like theirs would spend very little time alone together. In 1966 it would be utterly unheard of.

SarahAndQuack · 09/05/2021 23:27

YY, it's very odd the way she's almost treated as an unofficial spouse.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/05/2021 23:29

SMJ ate him.

haven’t watched it yet

@Toddlerteaplease

In a previous series, Dr T was sending a gay man for conversion therapy. So he wasn't that progressive. Missed most of it as at work.
That was the only alternative to prison. And it has been a few years. But Turner was sickly and over - earnest today. Nurse Crane was much more credible.
Palavah · 09/05/2021 23:42

Am excited for the prospect of a happy romantic ending for Trixie but hope it's a slow burner, rather than widower moving with indecent haste.

Would love a spin-off with Phyllis Crane setting the world to rights.

I like the new pupil nurse with no filter

Zzelda · 10/05/2021 00:55

I must say, I was quite pissed off with the Turners assuming the only medical career open to their daughters lay in nursing. It's not as if female doctors were unknown at that time.

Pupil Midwife. She is a trained nurse, SRN, doing her part ll midwifery at Nonnatus.

I watched the episode again and was really impressed.

Soubriquet · 10/05/2021 05:51

I’m currently watching it on catch up

Does anyone else think that Nancy looks a bit like Delia when she’s in her nursing outfit?

Soubriquet · 10/05/2021 06:23

Those bloody costumes Hmm

I would hate living near her. Her children are just so perfect compared to everyone else’s and she just have to show them off all the time

Soubriquet · 10/05/2021 06:40

Lucille and Cyril get entangled

Photograph shows them 2 metres apart.

Yes. That’s realistic

Veronika13 · 10/05/2021 06:50

I came across the books over a decade ago.

If you like reading, please read the books! The series had to cut out a lot of stuff as it was too outrageous to show as a family tv series.
But those scandalous moments absolutely make the stories!

Spending evenings alone with his flat with him! To our eyes that’s fine but as you say to a strict Christian community that would be looked down on.

I love Nancy - brilliant mix of fun, but no-nonsense, get-the-job-done smarts.

And yes, I though she looked a lot like Delia too.

Lol yes! All three children were Turners with three amazing costumes made by their perfect mum!

I do too. And I think that we will hear more of her story. There has to be something in her background.
Ravenclawsome · 10/05/2021 07:38

The nuns said she was in the orphanage. I wonder if it was one of the ones attached to a Magdalen Laundry?
Maybe her mum was sent there for an affair/illegitimate child and dad couldn't cope with kids on his own?

SoupDragon · 10/05/2021 07:43

I thought she went to the orphanage when she was 7.

EastWestWhosBest · 10/05/2021 07:43

She is Megan Cusack. Of the Cusack acting family.

Clawdy · 10/05/2021 08:04

I was thinking what a stroke of luck for a young actress to get a role on CTM. But it's obvious how that happened.

Yes! And also no mention of May, unless I misheard?

He didn't want to do it but it was the only alternative to jail at the time. I think this story was put in to show changing attitudes at that time. 1967 was a crucial year for decriminalising both male gay sex (over age 21 and in private) and abortion.
