Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

It's getting very annoying that the Turners are the first ever people to diagnose gestational diabetes, radiation from nuclear testing and thalidomide and yet they still haven't been awarded a Nobel Prize.

Grin Good point, well made, and of course that barely scratches the service of all the other conditions they've uncovered over the years.

I am praying that his yaying bairns learn to eyeroll and tut at him soon.

Immune to Covid?

That must have come in handy when he was developing the vaccines aged 107....

PurpleWh1teGreen · 03/05/2021 23:04

Spoiler alert for next week. Dr T fixes Geoffs leg and advises him to to play football to help him recover...

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 23:23

Is that before or after he scores the winning goal for England?

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 23:35

Not Geoff. Doctor T.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 23:38

I’ll bet he trained Pickles to find metal.

And helped Neil learn about gravity.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 03/05/2021 23:40

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

Not Geoff. Doctor T.
I don't know. Considering some of his storylines I wouldn't be suprised it ir was Dr T.
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 23:45

And I’ll bet he inspired the Bay City Rollers after Shelagh hemmed his breeks with some remnant tartan tea towels.

Shangalang.

(What he called chlamydia until he thought of something more catchy)

Holothane · 04/05/2021 00:03

Haha

EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology · 04/05/2021 00:15

Dr T would have been in the Rolling Stones but was too busy talking sternly to the Board of Health about what women want.

Shelagh said Ooh, Patrick, and had another wee baby.

Patrick looked pleased.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 04/05/2021 00:23

Only because he is still potent.

Dr T. And Mrs T. Cracking one off and popping one out annually for Queen and country.

Catch that one will ye Deirdre...

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/05/2021 07:04

Recently there have been fewer midwives than there used to be? Isn't that part of the issue with Dr Turner getting more involvement in everything? With the new arrival next week and Trixie's return, hopefully his over-appearances will become less of a thing.

With Fred and Sister Monica-Joan, they always have had an interesting relationship though haven't they? Even though they're chalk and cheese.

Maireas · 04/05/2021 07:35

It needs to revert to being midwife centric. The lovely thing was that it was a show from a woman's perspective. I think they could have kept it in some unspecified 1950s years, and not bothered with the contemporary references which update it.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2021 07:37

Yes, they lost that Eastend midwife, whose name escapes me (the one with the abortion ist grandmother) and never replaced her so they're one down.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 04/05/2021 07:41

I guess they're merging it away from the midwives for the changing times - it'll go from call the midwife to two spin offs, "call the dr (Turner, obvs)" and then one (need to think of a name 😂) for the drug addiction work the nuns changed to.

Then as time goes on, nhs doctors will become as rare in the wild as at home midwives, and the programme will change to "call 111"...

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2021 07:41

I think that reflects the actual history of the order, though. They became less necessary as midwives after the pill and started working with drug addicts.

DH and I like to see if we can guess the diseases of the week before Dr. T. I agree with whoever said the Turner children are incredibly annoying speaking in unison and nobody said 'Yay!' like that in 1966.

Maireas · 04/05/2021 07:42

She was good. There are the two nuns who seem a bit underdeveloped as characters, Trixie who I feel has run her course, Lucille and Phyllis. Phyllis is great and should be more central, I feel, rather than Dr Nobel Prize.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2021 07:42

Cross posts there re changing times.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2021 07:44

Will Trixie end up marrying the bereaved father from the first episode?

SoupDragon · 04/05/2021 07:45

Or at least dating.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2021 07:49

@SoupDragon

Will Trixie end up marrying the bereaved father from the first episode?
I hope so. Then they can go and live somewhere else because I can't stand her voice, it really grates on me.
Maireas · 04/05/2021 07:54

Me too, Captain. I used to find it mildly irritating, but now it just grates. Times have changed, which is why I think it should have stayed in the 50s to keep it about women and midwives. Dad's Army was on for longer than WW2!

Itwasjustresting · 04/05/2021 08:31

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

Ah resting

Dr Turner made the picnic sandwiches. And sliced the eggs from the chickens he keeps in the back garden. And garnished it with the cress he grew on the kitchen window sill.

Only after baking the bastard bread he made from wheat he genetically modified to make people not want to eat more than two slices of said bread a week.

There used to be a similar couple of series I think.

Breaking SMJ
and
Better Not Call Dr Turner

We will know they are cooking more than sponge cakes and Spicy pigs trotters in the kitchen when Trixie’s noggin ambles past Nonnatus House on the back of a tortoise.

Sunbird24 · 04/05/2021 08:56

It was Valerie they lost - where did she go?
