Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

Sorry I’m an episode behind. First episode a baby passed, then second the mum died of non birth related problems albeit.

Soubriquet · 03/05/2021 15:39

Ahh I forgot about the mum

Yes so far is 2/3 for death

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 15:51

It is actually 3/3.

Cyril’s dreams of getting down and sandy on the beach with Lucille died a death.

Poor Cyril

I mean I know Lucille has her work and it’s very important but Cyril always seems to be rebuffed

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 17:38

And little Cyril is destined to be unbuffed.

Itwasjustresting · 03/05/2021 17:43

Meh. It’s become Call Dr Turner.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/05/2021 17:51

Joining the club. My goodness this series is shit and it isn't just the social distancing.

What's with simpering Mrs T's amazing idea of hosting pupils? They've had pupils before ages ago. I think Jenny was still there. There was a montage. Jenny etc were pupils themselves at the start, there would be teaching sessions with the nuns and a blackboard etc.

Also, The Samaritans was founded by an Anglican vicar - so was it really secular in the 1960s?

Yeah I thought that, they've definitely had students before. I remember Jenny moaning about them!!

We thought SMJ was dead until she opened her eye and made us scream 😵🤣

I was a bit sceptical that GD wouldn't have been known about in 1966, I'll have a Google...

Yes, especially with that name
MelissaVonStressel · 03/05/2021 19:07

I thought the evil receptionist commenting she had too much admin to do, plus Louise being an unemployed hospital clerk would equal slightly less evil receptionist plus happy clerk but no.

It's getting very annoying that the Turners are the first ever people to diagnose gestational diabetes, radiation from nuclear testing and thalidomide and yet they still haven't been awarded a Nobel Prize.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 19:19

They HAVE their Nobel prizes.

The little yay kids use the medals as coins in their toy shoppy.

They’re positively minted with them.

Grin Oh well played, @MelissaVonStressel, absolutely sterling work.

I don’t understand, sorry - the Good Samaritan is one of the parables of Jesus.

woodhill · 03/05/2021 19:52

Exactly, so it wasn't secular. That was my point

PurpleWh1teGreen · 03/05/2021 19:59

Yes you're right. It's not centred enough on the women's stories any more. The women of the East End and the midwives who were with them.

The female characters whose value is to be part of a couple are far less interesting. No wonder Phyllis and receptionist lady are so fabulous.

I also think it's suffering from setting a series about Miriam Margoles.

Itwasjustresting · 03/05/2021 20:31

Thanks! Sorry, I was being dim.
woodhill · 03/05/2021 20:37

No problem but it was a daft comment by the scriptwriter imCTM otherwise why would it have been called Samaritans😊

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 03/05/2021 21:48

According to their site Samaritains was set up by a CoI vicar, and he handed it over to volunteers in 1954 when it became what it is today.

No reference to religion, so still not clear!!

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 03/05/2021 21:49

CoE sorry, not CoI

Itwasjustresting · 03/05/2021 22:09

It seemed an odd point to make. But it’s only a diversion from my rage at the Dr Turner show. He seemed to be in all the storylines this weekend, except the failed picnic. And as PP said, this was originally a series that centred women - mothers, midwives, nurses and nuns.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 22:43

Ah resting

Dr Turner made the picnic sandwiches. And sliced the eggs from the chickens he keeps in the back garden. And garnished it with the cress he grew on the kitchen window sill.

Only after baking the bastard bread he made from wheat he genetically modified to make people not want to eat more than two slices of said bread a week.

MelissaVonStressel · 03/05/2021 22:46

Yes and Fred Buckle was singlehandedly going to resolve Sister Monica Joan's crisis of faith. Perhaps the new curate can do that now. Anyone other than a woman, basically.

Or perhaps as well as being married to the show runner and curing world poverty, Dr Turner is immune to Covid so was able to keep on filming throughout.
