Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

I was wondering how Shelagh got her hospital uniform and induction training etc so quickly, when she started at the hospital. I did wince when she described the lady as overweight in the middle of the ward though.

Oncemoretwicemore · 03/05/2021 11:55

@Emmelina

Are we going to lose Sr MJ this series, do you think?
Please God. I now fast forward every time she appears on screen. Never has a character been so woefully overused.
EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology · 03/05/2021 12:31

I don't think Cyril will marry Lucille until his prospects have improved.

2021hwg · 03/05/2021 12:49

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

I was strangely unmoved this week - my black little heart was only gladdened by the sublime Phyllis and Miss Higgins.

I love Phyllis. Love her.

I want to be Phyllis. I reckon I’m as annoying as Dr Turner. But not as sickeningly compassionate and understanding.

I do a mean eye roll and a tut better than Ankhamun.

I could have his kids tutting like an old fashioned teleprinter. They could have him doubting himself and questioning his ability to tell which was the sharp end of a scalpel.

And he’d leave. With Trixie.

And Shelagh could have his baws in a jar to show her students.

I’ve it all worked out. Grin

I agree. It's so nice that That they have become such good friends. Shows they don't need a man
GreenClock · 03/05/2021 13:04

Miss Higgins and Phyllis are fab. I also love the Buckles and of course, Sister Julienne.

Rooting for Trixie. I really want the character to be happy! Not necessarily as a wife, maybe as a high flier career-wise.

Sister MJ is a character that ran its course a couple of years ago.

I’d like Timothy to rebel. Join the young conservatives or something. 😀

jay55 · 03/05/2021 13:08

When SMJ was pretending to be asleep I did wonder aloud if she was dead. Alas not yet.

Phylis and Mrs Higgins were my fave part too, the conspiratorial looks they share are brilliant, far more chemistry than Lucille and her chap.

And it was lovely to see Sandra Marvin as Mrs Williams, yes she was on Emerdale(don't watch so don't know who she was), I love her for being Motormouth in Hairspray.

Lepetitpiggy · 03/05/2021 13:16

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

Loved Mr Williams.

Not loving Dr Turner docsplaining everything in a mansplainy way and being the best doc since sliced loaf.

I am praying that his yaying bairns learn to eyeroll and tut at him soon.

Really praying.

And if it happens, SMJ will get her faith back quicker than a wink.

Oh my goodness, Dr Turner is the most annoying character on tv EVER. He is so irritating. And Sheila. Could they be more bloody perfect. And his acting is appalling. Grrrrrrr
iminthegarden · 03/05/2021 13:17

Love the way the Shelagh Turner singlehandedly solves the age old medical conundrum of Gestational Diabetes 🤣

Lucille pointed it out to her but I'm not sure Shelagh mentioned this to Dr Mansplainer. It was absolutely this week's lecture though.

I think Cyrill and Lucille's wedding will be the series finale. With the closing scene a close up of Sister MJ in a chair, tea cup slipping slowly from her hand as she shuffles off this mortal coil.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 03/05/2021 13:23

Must admit I did eye roll when Dr Turners waa standing behind Shelagh, grinning like a doped up Cheshire cat as Shelagh solved all the issues in the world after having discover the existence of gestational diabetes.

I would likethe Turners to next sort out that arrogate male hospital consultants next.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/05/2021 13:25

Aye. Shelagh is as glory grabbing as Dr T. Lucille sniffed out the diabetes first.

Smug is not becoming Shelagh. Just because you stopped being a nun doesn’t mean you can start being a cahnt.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 03/05/2021 13:38

I think the most annoying thing about the gestational diabetes storyline is that it felt like it was health education targeted at modern audiences.

Nurses, midwives & Drs would not have been surprised by GD in 1966.

Emmelina · 03/05/2021 13:43

Lucille is totally getting robbed on the GD thing. When she asked Shelagh’s advice, Shelagh was all “well that’s certainly an interesting theory...” before taking off on this big crusade, and the doc telling the kids they have a very clever mother (yAaAy) when it wouldn’t have occurred to her to look for the underlying cause of the weight gain and huge baby without the seed being planted.

The thing she wrote that prompted the nauseating ‘clever mummy’ comment wasn’t anything to do with the GD though, it was a proposal for the Nonnatans to do some midwifery training and put up student midwives in order to make a bit of money to help pay their increased rent…

SoupDragon · 03/05/2021 14:01

I assumed the "diabetic round" was to give insulin. I just thought it perhaps wasn't self administered then.

When Shelagh settled down at her typewriter, I thought she was preparing a research paper into GD 😂

I don’t know about you but it isn’t making me want to plonk myself in the front seat at his real life sciunce talks. Because that is certainly what it smelled like.

viques · 03/05/2021 14:20

@WinterHoliday

I have also done the Call the Midwife tour at Chatham Dockyard and would definitely recommend it. They've used a number of buildings there for different scenes in the early series. I presume they'll be back once lockdown is over.

It annoys me that Lucille and Cyril are always so far apart. Could they not be in some kind of bubble and stand closer together?? There is a complete lack of chemistry between them because they are always standing as far as they possibly can from each other.

The funniest scene was the one in the dining room where they sat so far apart from each other at the enormous table it would have been impossible to pass the sandwiches with any semblance of politeness .
Rockbird · 03/05/2021 15:20

Thank you Sunbird. She wasn't taking the glory for the GD, it was her cunning plan to save Nonnatus. Yaaaay! Grin

Rockbird · 03/05/2021 15:22

I've been to lots of his talks, back in the day before I realised he was a twat and he's actually very engaging as a speaker, just not so much as a TV doctor. Although go back and watch the Christmas special where he and Shelagh get married, that was fantastic TV (sniffle)

OverTheRainbow88 · 03/05/2021 15:23

I can’t believe and baby and mum have passed in 2/2 episodes. Was not expecting such heart break

Yeah...no one died last episode

A baby died in the first episode but that was it

Soubriquet · 03/05/2021 15:28

In fact, I can’t recall a single episode where both mother AND baby died

The diabetic round was giving insulin. They were district nurses as well as midwives.
