I like to think that Buckells is an accidental stooge rather than corrupt

For me he so perfectly embodies those twats you get in every workplace who have been promoted beyond their ability. He's stupid and lazy, toes the party line unquestioningly, likes a quiet life and doesn't notice things going on under his nose. He is easy for the OCG's corrupt officers to manipulate but I don't think he is one of them.

I'd be disappointed if that was all a double bluff and he turns out to be some criminal mastermind.

30not13 · 31/03/2021 18:39

@Buggerthebotox

That BBC programme was a shocker. Real - life OCGs in action. Scary stuff. Those cops must be made of strong stuff.
What's the programme called?
CovoidOfAllHumanity · 31/03/2021 18:49

The Detectives: Fighting Organised Crime

It's a really good watch
Scary that incredibly violent men with guns are doing incredibly violent things on the streets of Manchester in real life
Love the female DS calm in the face of these horrible aggressive thugs
The OCG criminals are a lot more thick and stupid than in LOD though (thank goodness). They forget to pull their balaclavas down, get caught on CCTV, leave forensic evidence and send incriminating messages to one another. It wouldn't be great fictional telly

Walkingtheplank · 31/03/2021 19:10

Oh yes, the female detective appeared as cool as cucumber. She was most impressive.

BobBobBobbin · 31/03/2021 19:36

I’ve just been watching it - fascinating stuff! They’re more a gang of violent thugs than LoD-style OGC.

Yes the female detective was great.

Yes, I watched that programme too. The violence was horrendous and I agree that the thugs were careless, leaving clues everywhere. When the first one of the gang was arrested and turned really aggressive and was goading the police, I was surprised that they just stood there and took it. I was fully expecting a couple of coppers to shut him up! They all looked scared to death of him.
ceeveebee · 31/03/2021 19:48

Did anyone else think that the female officer (DS Julie Connor?) looked and sounded just like Caroline Aherne (Denise Royal?)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/03/2021 19:50

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

I'm going to have to get this aren't I? Grin

That mug is . . . BEAUTIFUL . . .

ceeveebee · 31/03/2021 19:52

Interestingly in the Manchester programme they said that OCG often prey on the vulnerable or those with special needs, taking over their properties and using them as a base. Looks like Jed Mercurio did his research well coming up with the Terry storyline

PawFives · 31/03/2021 20:14

I think the OCG target Steve storyline will play out. I really hope it’s on his terms (undercover). He’s not as smart as Kate so more likely to get into a compromising situation. But he’s pretty straight up so would be coerced rather than bent.

JustLyra · 31/03/2021 21:43

I just saw that on Twitter 😂

ImAncient · 31/03/2021 22:13

The real life program was a real eye opener. Vicious thugs. Glad they got sent down.

CheekyWeeShite · 31/03/2021 22:24

We were told he used to caddy as a kid really early on in the first series, yet it took several series before AC12 worked out it was him.

I’m pretty sure that he didn’t mention being a caddy until he was talking to Hilton in the penultimate episode of S1. So it wasn’t long before he was revealed to be the caddy properly.

As for Buckells, I’ve been saying for ages now that he’s my lead suspect.

It would be really unsatisfying if Jed made the big bad someone we don’t know, or who’s only come into it near the end. It’s also hard to conceal if it’s someone we know well, as everyone is examining everything. Buckells would be the ideal candidate as most won’t suspect him as he’s so inept.

Buckells has been hiding in plain sight all along - and he does just keep coming back doesn’t he, even though there’s no real narrative purpose most of the time. And he was the one who was given the Laverty case by Hilton in S1.

I wish I’d put a bet on when this idea first came to me in S4. To paraphrase Dwight Schrute, he is the person I most medium suspect 😬

easterholidays · 31/03/2021 22:53

I can imagine Steve, grumpy and addicted and thinking Kate's abandoned him, being a target for blackmail/coercion by the OCG and not realising that Kate is still onside but deep undercover, with complicated consequences for all.

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 01/04/2021 01:02

There's got to be something with Gail's laptop being replaced with another. Remember when Ted took a laptop to be destroyed in the last series? and when questioned said it was because he had been looking at porn sites...

LutherRalph1 · 01/04/2021 06:02

I was going to rewatch from Series 1, again, but this time round I couldn't face the raid on the man with the baby in the carrier 😩 so upsetting

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/04/2021 07:34

It was upsetting Luther - and so was that entire series 2/3 with all the dreadful things that happened to poor DI Lindsay Denton.

I haven't been able to watch that series because it just breaks my heart - that poor girl! I know she "done wrong" but she was so human - and so intrinsically good.

LadyEloise · 01/04/2021 08:11

For those watching LOD in Ireland, the entire seasons 1-5 will be shown on the RTE Player.
I got an email from RTE stating this.
They are working on getting Series 6.
This is great news for those of us who missed the earlier series.
We in Ireland can't access the BBC player ( I'd be willing to pay and have emailed the BBC in relation to this ) or Brit Box.

Pomegranatespompom · 01/04/2021 08:59

I wouldn't be able to rewatch either. Fele the same about spooks, such great drama but very hard hitting.

For something light - Agatha Raisin is good and she has a fantastic wardrobe. It's the opposite of LOD ...

I didn’t realise that you couldn’t access BritBox from Ireland. Surely that’s a missed opportunity- I’d imagine there’s a fair amount of demand given that you’re barred from iPlayer.

Totally agree with this, feel exactly the same.

I've rewatched all the series many times (sad, I know). Some of it is really grim, so I fast forward, or hide behind my hands (like I did when I was a kid, and those pesky daleks appeared!) Grin

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 01/04/2021 10:23

Rewatched the end of S3 last night, Kate was recording Dot's dying statement... and there was no one near them to be recording the "H/four dots" on their body cam. Doh! Grin

LadyEloise · 01/04/2021 10:25

@FourWordsImMuNiTy "....Surely that's a missed opportunity - I'd imagine there's a fair amount of demand given that you're barred from iplayer."

Yep !
I know the BBC is rather strapped for cash so I emailed Head Office with my ground breaking plan ( not ) to open up BBC IPLAYER for a fee.
They have no plans to do that.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 01/04/2021 10:27

See? No one anywhere near them! 😂
