Is anyone watching it out of all the bad press she gets you can see she really cares about Harvey

@Fizbossshoes

I may have misunderstood as I am not familiar with how funding works for disabled individuals but I'm sure one of the colleges said that LAs tend to offer funded places for local placements rather than hours away.

JulieJJ · 26/01/2021 07:56

@PrincessScarlett. The LA will pay. It is normal for them to say the 'nearest' suitable school, but the parents have the right to ask for one of their choice. The LA will then decide between their choice and Katie's. The LA are unlikely to have much choice available to them due to Harvey's complex needs. Once they've checked both schools are suitable to meet needs and able to offer a place they will then compare costs which will include transport and residential fees etc.

Samcro · 26/01/2021 08:14

@PrincessScarlett

I don't think Harvey is reliant on state funding to get a place. One of the colleges was telling Katie that local authorities only tend to fund for nearest college rather than the one best suited to a person's needs so it is likely Katie will be paying for it herself.
that is not always true. you have to prove that local ones don't suit the persons needs. (mine went 3 hours away from home) as he is an adult his parents money does not count.
JulieJJ · 26/01/2021 08:17

The LA have a legal responsibility to meet his needs regardless of financial income. In much the same way all of our children can access state education and the NHS.

Spanielmadness · 26/01/2021 08:23

@TableFlowerss in light of your comment, which I 100% agree with - you might want to google the meaning of ‘cretin’

tryingtocatchthewind · 26/01/2021 08:27

I almost turned this off as it started as I’m not interested in KP or any of the reality gang. I’m glad I stuck with it as what a heart warming bond they have and despite his many medical issues what a fine, polite young man he is. I wish him all the well in the future and hope they find him a suitable college

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 26/01/2021 08:32

KPhas gone through some very tough times in her life , some via her wrong choices and some totally not her fault , but you never see her blubbing to the media trying to get sympathy. I'm sure she does her crying in private but in public she just gets on with it and I think sadly some people resent her for that ,which is odd.

Most do not accept self funding. LEas pay accordin g to need
meow1989 · 26/01/2021 08:36

I'm not a KP fan at all, but I did think this showed her as a loving and dedicated mum who is terrified about the prospect of her vulnerable child reaching adulthood. That college looked so lovely, the staff dealt very well with Harvey when he began feeling over whelmed.

The only bit I didn't like was the talk about the local authority essentially taking children away and sectioning them. I'm absolutely not saying that people with disabilities haven't been and aren't inappropriately admitted to a mental health facility, but it's not a lightly taken decision and should only be taken when a person is at true risk to themselves - there's lots of preventative work that (should) takes place first. I though this bit fed into the "social services just want to snatch your child" reteric which is a shame but it's such a big topic it couldn't possibly be explored in a passing comment in another programme.

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/01/2021 08:38

I’m glad she’s highlighting the importance of him going to college for himself as much as because she needs help with him.

Too many people do see it as ‘putting them in care’ and it’s about what’s best for the young person.

Deathraystare · 26/01/2021 08:41

I am also not her greatest fan! However was interested in the programme, with the idea if she got on my nerves too much I would channel hop. I stayed with the programme, found it fascinating. Yes they do have seem to have a good relationship.

It must be really worrying to any parents who have SN/learning difficulties/etc etc. I often wonder what my friend will do, she has two teens - one on the spectrum, the other gets very depressed. I don't know if she has anything in place for them. She is now a single parent as her older husband died recently.

EmmaC78 · 26/01/2021 08:43

I am not a KP fan either but I have watched a few programmes with her and Harvey over the years and do think she does an amazing job as a mum to him.

Roselilly36 · 26/01/2021 08:49

Katie is a good mum, and doing the best she can for her son, they clearly have a fantastic, loving bond.

Between the two colleges televised I think for she selected the best option for Harvey’s needs, considering Harvey was upset when he arrived, the staff managed to settle him, that to me, spoke volumes.

I think the mum, who experienced her son, being sectioned in the most terrible circumstances, gave Katie great advice, when she said to trust your gut.

I hope they get the funding approved. I would imagine the costs of the specialist colleges are probably very similar, so hopefully, Harvey & Katie will be ok for a place. Of course, Katie would like Harvey to be local, but she is making this decision for Harvey, rather than herself, as any mum would.

Thank you for the clarification on funding. It is easy to forget he is an adult in his own right and entitled to funding because of his own complex needs.

itsgettingweird · 26/01/2021 09:19

There really is 2 Katie Prices.

I don't think she ever really dropped the Jordan persona and we still see a lot of that side of Katie Price.

Yet as a mum, and especially as a mum to a severely disabled young man, she is fantastic. She's a completely different person.

What makes me sad is she can't let go of the other side or her - the self destructive side. The side that needs the audience and validation. What's even sadder is many parents of disabled children often feel like they lose an identity. I fear this has fuelled her other side more.

I really wish she could get proper therapy and a proper job in the spotlight but as an advocate and campaigner for disabled children. She'd do so much and really think her platform would help her get heard - and therefore the voice of millions get heard too.

Ch3rish · 26/01/2021 09:27

I really don't know why but I've followed KP and her documentaries well before she was even pregnant with Harvey. I don't lump her in with all of today's vacuous love island Z listers, she's a bright woman with a personality.

I've always thought she comes across as a nice person who obviously has some issues with relationships and has no doubt been taken advantage of by some people in her life. I didn't watch last night but will find it on the iplayer

its very difficult. I know of parents who have not been able to go down the FE route as their child has money(negligence payouts)
I didn't watch it as I keep seeing her saying he won't go into care.
what colleges did they look at?

Cosmos123 · 26/01/2021 10:26

She has always tried to teach out to Dwight York so many times and he has refused point blank.
Tragically when he was in admitted into hospital with a serious condition she reached out again.
Again he did not get in touch with his son who nearly died.
HOW CAN YOU BE SO CALLOUS?

He is not worthy of the title human.
Well done Katie you are wonderful devoted mother.

@Samcro

They looked at The Orpheus Centre in Surrey and National Star in Cheltenham.

At the first one Harvey got quite distressed but at the National Star he liked it and that's the one they've applied to I think. The staff came across as wonderful with him.

Samcro · 26/01/2021 11:45

wow without outing myself. Star is amazing. cannot think of a bad thing about it.

PrincessScarlett · 26/01/2021 12:17

Harvey felt very calm and settled at Star, so much so that he went off alone with the staff without his mum. It really did come across as an amazing place and I can see why Katie would want Harvey there.

Embracelife · 26/01/2021 12:59

She was mis represented
This isnt about going into care.
She clearly isnt abandoning him or giving up on him

It is about the best placement where he can learn and grow
I totally agree with her about letting go and giving our adult dc with LDs the chance to move on in the best setting possible.

Orpheus will suit some young people but clearly star really suits Harvey

Later the same dilemna what snd where next ?

Thefaceofboe · 26/01/2021 13:14

Katie is an amazing Mum to Harvey, she has done an amazing job bringing him up.

Gottalovesummer · 26/01/2021 13:26

I watched it and it totally and utterly changed my opinion of her.

Katie, I think you're bloody wonderful.
