I'm struggling to find series' that don't have misogyny as a main plot point.
My OH and I have just finished watching the queens gambit and loved it, it was so refreshing to see a female lead that wasnt abused or murdered, it looked great and was generally a pleasure to watch.
So we're looking for a new series to watch together, but all these top shows on netflix seemed to revolve around the suffering of women and/or childrenHmm For example I had to turn off 'You' in the first minute because the creepy voiceover made me feel ill.
I can't face it, I want to be entertained, not made more miserable.

I don't often see it mentioned but after we watched Schitts Creek which was good we watched Kim's Convenience, a feel good 20-odd minute show.

Bonsai49 · 09/12/2020 22:25

I’ve felt this way for years and as a result I watch virtually no TV that isn’t some kind of documentary ... I’ll definitely be googling some of the ideas posted

LemonOrange · 12/12/2020 14:26

Totally agree Op, my DH gets a bit irritated when we start a film and 5 mins in I say no, can’t watch domestic violence, rape, abuse etc etc and it’s so hard to find tv without it! The Queen’s Gambit was fabulous, great female characters and the lead had good male friends too!

West Wing series (old but I don’t think it has dated)
The Good Doctor (like House but a bit softer).

Yonderland on Now TV

Randomrebel · 19/12/2020 23:53

Any more recommendations also interested in similar;

Enjoyed: Queens Gambit, Virgin River, Emily in Paris (light and fluffy) fab scenery, Grace and Frankie, Offspring, Suits etc. Anything else I’m missing for easy viewing over Christmas hols?

smileannie · 20/12/2020 02:32

Definitely The Marvellous Mrs Maisel.

Randomrebel · 20/12/2020 16:21

👍 will try that

alliejay81 · 20/12/2020 16:27

What a great post. I'm going to have a look at some of these!

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 20/12/2020 16:29

I was surprised but really like Grace and Frankie on Netflix, good cast and the development of the characters and relationships over the series is good, it's funny but also has more emotional storylines at times

Ninbus · 20/12/2020 16:29

I am always saying this too. Why do so many shows have to be about rape and murder of women. I think that’s why I liked killing eve as it was a bit different. I also liked dead to me on Netflix and the stranger on netflix

Ninbus · 20/12/2020 16:32

I also liked breaking bad. There is violence but not really against women so much

Ninbus · 20/12/2020 16:43

We tried watching the fall the other day and I couldn’t understand why it was so popular. It’s just grim

Ninbus · 20/12/2020 16:46

When we watched the queens gambit I spent the whole time thinking soo er or later she was going to be abused by someone. You almost expect it to come in every storyline

Mangermaid · 20/12/2020 16:54

After Life. Some good female characters.

Tigger03 · 20/12/2020 16:56

Easy viewing I’m enjoying:

Queens gambit, virgin river, Lost (yes I’m 10 years out of date), desperate housewives, modern family, dead to me, grace and frankie, ms Maizel.

Not been mentioned so far but Upload on amazon prime was good - from the writers of parks and rec.

Longtalljosie · 20/12/2020 16:56

Exactly that @Ninbus. It really opened my eyes to how prevalent it is
sofiaaaaaa · 20/12/2020 16:58

The crown? I have only watched the first season. There’s a touch of misogyny in an olden day “women’s housewife role” way, but not in a violent way

Ah why did you watch You?? You couldn’t get more anti-women😂

Maybe something tame like Riverdale or Pretty little liars would work? Or house of cards, homeland and designated survivor?

LittleRa · 20/12/2020 16:59

@flapjackfairy

Virgin River is easy viewing.
Virgin River does have a storyline of a woman who is fleeing her abusive ex, he beats her up then she pushes him down the stairs and kills him. So might not quite fit the OP’s brief.

OP, Sweet Magnolias on Netflix, as some others have mentioned.

BinkyBoinky · 20/12/2020 17:36

The Mandalorian! Women fighters, the cuuuutest green baby, and a man who is the nurturing type! Really brilliant show!

CrimsonSqueak · 20/12/2020 17:47

Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions. I've started watching Dead to Me, which is great! No rapes and a really good female friendship.
Me and my husband couldnt agree on a series to watch together so we've started going through and rating all the made for TV christmas films that are on netflix, 'A Christmas Prince', 'The Knight Before Christmas', Dolly Parton's 'Christmas in the Square'
They are all pretty terrible but usually under 90mins, so it's been quite fun and festive to pop one on and have a glass of wine in the evening. Bonus is there's almost certain to be no women getting raped or murdered Xmas Grin

Yes longtalljosie I was thinking, I was thinking oh no please don’t let her be abused at the children’s home. Then I kept thinking the grand masters or other men would abuse her. But it just never happened which was so nice !

Randomrebel · 20/12/2020 23:14

Offspring and Grace and Frankie are quite dated.

gurglebelly · 20/12/2020 23:17

Sorry coming to this late but what about things like Designated Survivor and New Amsterdam?

Longtalljosie · 21/12/2020 06:18

Perhaps it is because the book was written in 1983, pre-mass online porn and the mainstreaming of degrading women for kicks?

longwayoff · 21/12/2020 07:37

I spent part of yesterday watching Klaus on Netflix, much to my surprise. Cartoon, European, story of how Santa came to be. It's reminiscent of Tim Burton, so not for younger children, but is touching and amusing.
