Shows WITHOUT rape/sexual violence/women getting murdered

I'm struggling to find series' that don't have misogyny as a main plot point.
My OH and I have just finished watching the queens gambit and loved it, it was so refreshing to see a female lead that wasnt abused or murdered, it looked great and was generally a pleasure to watch.
So we're looking for a new series to watch together, but all these top shows on netflix seemed to revolve around the suffering of women and/or childrenHmm For example I had to turn off 'You' in the first minute because the creepy voiceover made me feel ill.
I can't face it, I want to be entertained, not made more miserable.

Call My Agent. New and last series just arrived on Netflix, series 4. Hurrah am going to ration my viewing to one at a time.

Discovery of Witches

The Good Place? Everyone's already dead.

Lunaballoon · 22/01/2021 07:55

YY to the new series of Call My Agent. Also planning to savour it as a weekly Saturday night treat!

We’re also enjoying the Spanish series Money Heist on Netflix. Strong female characters, interesting plot twists.

Place marking here. Its like a bloody disease.

I started watching Queens Gambit and stopped because it was all going so well for her that I assumed it was time for her to experience some kind of hideous violence (will continue now)

DH was watching the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films and I asked him to put headphones on as I was revolted by hearing her get raped (again). At the end he said it was OK as the bad guys got their comeuppance- but as I pointed out that doesn't usually happen in real life...

longwayoff · 22/01/2021 10:06

Dont understand the love for the Dragon Tattoo books, the author seems to me to be very over invested in describing rape and suffering. Oh, but, she gets revenge . . . as if that makes it OK. It's doesn't, it just adds to it.

IZombie?

The Bridge?

GammyLeg · 22/01/2021 10:13

@Jecstar

Succession is brilliant and would fit the bill I think.
Undoubtedly the best thing I saw last year. What a gripping show!
Somuddled · 22/01/2021 10:17

I won't agree the Good Girls fits the brief. I actually found it hard watching that the main male character is abusive and attempts to rape a character and yet at point all the women show him some sympathy. It really put me off. Same for 'Sanat Clarita Diet' the guy that tries to rape her ends up being a family friend. Fuck that shit. Even for a comedy it made me so uncomfortable.

Somuddled · 22/01/2021 10:25

Also thank you to everyone for making me realize that the Queen's Gambit is worth carrying on with. I stopped when I assumed we were going to find out that the janitor had abused her. As AnyFucker said, how fucking sad it is that we are so exposed to this view that we assume it? It has actually made me so sad.

I'm so sick of being recommended a show, sticking it on and finding myself having to watch a violent rape of a woman or a reference to the abuse of children, sometimes within the first few minutes. I turn it off instantly and wish I had the balls to text who ever recommended it to question their own morals.

Somuddled couldn’t agree more.

I would have loved many aspects of Games of Thrones but the rape/incest and general violence made it impossible. No idea how other people can stomach it and so many people worldwide, they just gloss over it. Also real life crime programmes? Why would you want to go there! Hope you enjoy Queen’s Gambit.

callmeadoctor · 22/01/2021 15:04

Jessica Jones on Netflix, I have a total girl crush on her. She is a Badass!!!! (ok ahem a bit of violence, but not to women as such)

scentedgeranium · 25/01/2021 20:30

Nearly finished first season of Call My Agent and so far so good. Unless anyone wants to pre warn me for future episodes?

Hawkins001 · 25/01/2021 20:35

Star Trek voyager has captain Janeway, there's Stargate SG-1 with Sam carter, there's the show relic hunter, with the lady from Wayne's world,

longwayoff · 25/01/2021 22:09

Calm yourself, geranium it's a little treasure. I havent seen S4 yet but I'm sure it's as charming as its predecessors.

scentedgeranium · 26/01/2021 07:54

oh phew! @longwayoff! I worried because the strap warning at the top with the 15 certificate always warns of nudity!

longwayoff · 26/01/2021 08:57

Hmm. The conception scene might alarm you in that case although, for once, it's a 'sex scene' that really is pertinent to the story. Even then, it's amusing, not salacious. I can't recall anything else at all but it's a while since I saw it. Definitely no gratuitous violence or gore though.

GingerPCatt · 26/01/2021 09:22

While it is about the patriarchy - Orphan Black on Netflix is awesome.

The overarching theme is women fighting against the patriarchy for autonomy over their own bodies and lives. There is some violence, but the women give as good as they get and it never felt gratuitous. There are some interesting issues around sexual consent that I don't think the show explored as well as they could, but in contrast to the usual, it was men who were the victims.

It's a very fast paced show with a lot of action and the main actress is absolutely amazing.

Better Things on iPlayer - American actress single mum raising her 3 daughters. She has no filters. She is 'helped' by her mum played by Celia Imry. Very funny

Chelsea567 · 26/01/2021 13:37

If you want utter escapism try Bridgerton! I binge watched it and didn't think of Covid and all the other shit that's going on for 4 hours straight! It was great! And the Duke is very easy on the eye Wink

CuteOrangeElephant · 26/01/2021 13:52

If you want a murder mystery type show that is more gentle try Father Brown or Miss Marple. People do of course still get murdered in them but neither of them are gory.

You might find does the dog die useful, it has loads of 'does X happen' for most recent media. You can search by category (such as domestic violence or sexual assault) or look up a specific film/series. I don't use it a lot but it seems to be quite well curated.
