I'm struggling to find series' that don't have misogyny as a main plot point.
My OH and I have just finished watching the queens gambit and loved it, it was so refreshing to see a female lead that wasnt abused or murdered, it looked great and was generally a pleasure to watch.
So we're looking for a new series to watch together, but all these top shows on netflix seemed to revolve around the suffering of women and/or childrenHmm For example I had to turn off 'You' in the first minute because the creepy voiceover made me feel ill.
I can't face it, I want to be entertained, not made more miserable.

Great thread! I also hate watching women being tortured, but I can't stand 'chic flick' type things either. I like exciting things, but without it having gratuitous violence. Spy things can be good - homeland, can be violent but not misogynistic. Poirot, murder mysteries but not gratuitous and not misogynistic.
Luther was particularly grim and the series that opened my eyes to how 'normal' this type of tv has become.

AnyFucker · 21/12/2020 08:01

I also realised that I was just waiting for the female lead in Queen's Gambit to be sexually abused by the janitor in the school basement. Instead, they really did just play chess.

It just shows how much we have become brainwashed to accept it in everything we see. Sad.

carlaCox · 21/12/2020 08:02

Completely agree with you OP but I'm also tired of gratuitous female nudity (without any male nudity!). It's almost as if on some shows they worry their male viewers are getting bored so just throw in a random pair of tits every 20 minutes to keep them interested. Yawn.

I'm watching Borgen on Netflix atm which is like the West Wing / House of Cards but set in Denmark with a female prime minister. It's so good! And so refreshing to see a woman take on that kind of role. (Warning: it's in Danish so only watch if you don't mind subtitles).

Longtalljosie · 21/12/2020 09:37

I watched Borgen when DD2 was a tiny unsettled baby. I didn’t hear a word of Danish but it was a good read 😬

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 21/12/2020 09:45

How about Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries?

A friend recommended it and I LOVED it. Yes, women do get murdered, but the lead character is a female private investigator who defies all sorts of conventions (the series is set in 1920s Australia 😂) and has such a great chemistry with the male detective. I promise you will love it.

mrsfeatherbottom · 21/12/2020 10:48

Borgen is brilliant - highly recommend.

This Is Us is also very good.

TimeQuest01 · 22/12/2020 07:11

@longwayoff, and next season is coming out in January, can’t wait!!

If you like french humour, I have watched a few episodes of Family Business and it’s a bit silly but quite fun.

TimeQuest01 · 22/12/2020 07:21

I usually don’t go for this type of show, but have recently seen Home for Christmas and really enjoyed it.

It’s about a Danish young nurse trying to find a boyfriend before Christmas day.

Does sound very cliché, but it’s better than any typical American version would have been.

lomojojo · 22/12/2020 07:46

Kdrama - 90% of the writers are women and all the women characters are people. No gore, no sexual violence, just storylines and plot and humour and romance. I've completely given up being terrorised by western television.

TasslesandFringes · 22/12/2020 07:48

I’ve been going to write this same post for a while. When will screenwriters learn that women don’t want to watch -

  • women being abused, raped, tortured, murdered
  • women who are naked most of the time - when the men aren’t
  • films that are all about men where women don’t do more than play an attractive sidekick / mother or caretaker role

Find it really hard to find a film that is exciting and maybe even a thriller - yet that excludes the above. Thank goodness we have some quality tv

Loved Schitts Creek, very funny telly. Killing Eve was very good although very brutal at times obv.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/12/2020 07:50

The Good Place
Little Fires Everywhere

TasslesandFringes · 22/12/2020 07:51

Lomojomo - yes also given up being terrorised by western TV’s VIOLENCE TO WOMEN.

Kdrama - ooh never heard of it but I see there’s lots on Netflix

lomojojo · 22/12/2020 08:02

TasslesandFringes If you go on the kdrama thread on this board, the regulars will do you a rec list based on your likes/dislikes. That's how I got into it. They know drama.

longwayoff · 22/12/2020 11:08

@TimeQuest01, o thank you, I didnt know that, something to look forward to. I found a Spanish film on Netflix which was quite amusing, A Remarkable Tale. If we share similar tastes, I think you'd like it and will make you smile.

TimeQuest01 · 22/12/2020 13:17

@longwayoff, I’ll check it out (I’m actually Spanish!)

whataboutbob · 23/12/2020 18:08

This thread title just jumped out at me. I have been heartily fed up, for years, with shows ( including BBC radio 4) that are predicated on women’s suffering. The misogynistic murder porn which seems to be such a safe bet for TV and radio producers really exasperates me.
Haven’t read the whole thread but I loved Call My Agent (French, Netflix). No woman gets murdered or raped.

CrimsonSqueak · 02/01/2021 10:31

I started watching Bridgerton, it's...fine. It looks really good but it's a bit flat, it doesnt really make me want to keep watching. I've watched the first 3 episodes now and just got bored and stopped.

VienneseWhirligig · 02/01/2021 10:35

After Life is good, the lead is a male but its about his grief over his dead wife and he develops strong platonic friendships with women. I have rewatched a few times now.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/01/2021 10:39

I made a decision to stop watching 'pornography of death' programmes, especially those where women and children are killed. It certainly reduces the time I spend watching the TV.

It's just so depressing, and the plots so often replicated the well worn she deserved it/ it was provoked/but he was so nice crap you see in the news.

Jecstar · 02/01/2021 10:43

Succession is brilliant and would fit the bill I think.

scentedgeranium · 02/01/2021 22:21

Joining and following. I comb IMBD carefully to check advisories on shows these days. I can cope with drug taking, violence generally, and bad language. But violence a giant women and gratuitous naked women really piss me off. Thank you OP!

IdblowJonSnow · 22/01/2021 01:27

I loved queens gambit too and also get heartily sick of needlessly scantily clad women, bludgeoned women, women who are 20 years younger and 3 x more attractive than their male counterparts etc.
I was quite annoyed at one or two episodes before the finale in queens G where she was always pissed and twirling around in see through tops and a pair of knickers. I felt like a different producer/director was in control of that one or two episodes. Did no one else notice?

LizFlowers · 22/01/2021 01:47

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit sometimes has men being raped and murdered for a change.

RAOK · 22/01/2021 02:04

@WaltzingBetty

I came in to suggest the a queens gambit.. it's brilliant, and so refreshing.
Me too!
Catsup · 22/01/2021 02:24

I keep casting an eye towards Starzplay as there seems to be quite a lot of female lead genre type series on there that I think 'ooh that looks good?', but I'm also a bit reluctant to add yet another subscription to my many 🥴 Anyone given it a go?
