I'm struggling to find series' that don't have misogyny as a main plot point.
My OH and I have just finished watching the queens gambit and loved it, it was so refreshing to see a female lead that wasnt abused or murdered, it looked great and was generally a pleasure to watch.
So we're looking for a new series to watch together, but all these top shows on netflix seemed to revolve around the suffering of women and/or childrenHmm For example I had to turn off 'You' in the first minute because the creepy voiceover made me feel ill.
I can't face it, I want to be entertained, not made more miserable.

Two films, Yesterday and Blinded by the Light. Nothing nasty at all, just cheerful couple of hours each. Lift your spirits with both.

If you have never watched Mrs Maisel, you must .... SO beautifully made, so funny, so empowering, such great clothes ... as good as Queen's Gambit in a different way...

I loved better things. Really brilliant.

Currently enjoying Mrs Maisel. Both have made me laugh out loud.

I loved queens gambit and am also a big fan of Jessica Jones. She really is badass.
If you don't mind subtitles Empress Ki is fun.

Just watched Finnish drama Man in room 301 on iplayer. No murder/rape of women, a different take on a family with secrets. I enjoyed it.

Another Finnish drama on All 4 All the sins was good as well. Set in a religious village/town in northern Finland, a cop who grew up there and escaped is sent back to investigate a murder (man/non sexual).

I really liked the lead character (cop) thought it was a good portrayal of “having to go back to where you came from”

Halt and Catch Fire.

Star Trek, discovery is the latest, lots of good female characters.

Totally agree with you. We used to watch Criminal Minds and at one point I just said no more. I can’t watch another woman’s body being dug up or listen to a woman scream while being raped, tortured and killed. It’s sick that so many programmes rely on this for entertainment.

DP recommended a series called Big Sky I think, last week, saying it had lots of twists and turns. The first episode was a young transwoman and two teen girls being kidnapped and tied up in the back of a truck and taken to a lock up. He says I should persevere because they get their own back but I spent the whole hour with my heart racing feeling anxious and in peril. Why would I do that to myself for entertainment?!

In fairness I did recently watch an Australian series called Wanted which also started that way and went the way of Thelma and Louise. Something about the pace of it meant that their peril was over reasonably quickly and the “girl power” element kicked in early on, so it was a bit more palatable and maybe I’ve just had my fill of it lately.

Also watching The Wilds about a bunch of teenage girls who get stranded on a desert island. No obvious or apparent misogyny in that one!

Family movies. Unfortunately

I'm watching cucumber on channel 4, easily the best series I've watched in years.

It was made by the guy who did its a sin, so if you liked that you'll love this.

sparklyglitterball · 10/03/2021 13:40

Completely agree. Myself and DH tried to start watching handmaidens tale last night, but only made it halfway through the first episode. I'm also struggling to understand how rape, torture and violence towards women is entertaining?! Keep thinking there's something wrong with me for finding this kind of content so disturbing to watch.

longwayoff · 10/03/2021 19:59

It's not you sparkly it's the misogynistic dominance of the film and TV industries. I hope that in 50 years our children will look at the garbage produced in the name of entertainment and wonder how we could possibly have let it pass unnoticed. But I'm not very hopeful; it seems to be going the other way.

Urgh - just finished the Wilds - it was excellent (& teed up for a second series) but of course a show with 10 teenage girls in it couldn’t get by without at least one of them experiencing something dodgy. At least it wasn’t actually shown for our entertainment but it was alluded to. There is also some violence against an animal, being a survival setting, so not exactly a gentle romp, but at least it centres girls and women - and talks about toxic masculinity at one point.
