New thread - because of the imminent closure of the last.

Also Larry Lamb was disappointingly bullying

MaggieFS · 04/12/2020 23:11

I'm happy she won. Her best bits vid made me smile and I thought it was very telling when she said she wanted to show being mumsy wasn't a negative thing. I don't use insta and wanted her to win based on what I saw not because she "pimps out her family". Just because she didn't squeal and yelp through the eating trial doesn't mean it wasn't bloody difficult.

As for Jordan, I liked him too and he did very well, clearly very scared in a lot of trials but persevered. However, his immaturity reminded me of the girls at school who used to get away with all sorts by playing the cutesy card and I'm not a fan of that.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 04/12/2020 23:20

James Haskell was awful! I liked him before he went in! How wrong i was. Patronising arrogant sod who thought he was better than everyone else.

OytheBumbler · 04/12/2020 23:28

Ah well I've enjoyed it on the whole.

Mainly because of Ant and Dec. The celebs were fine. I didn't love/hate any of them.

This time next year I won't remember them but they've entertained me for a couple of weeks.

I think my favourite year was Jason Donovan and David Gest's bromance. They were hilarious!

Aragog · 04/12/2020 23:30

Ah yes, that's the ones. Such nastiness. It just wasn't nice to watch and definitely wouldn't have been right for 2020 I feel.

dottiedaisee · 04/12/2020 23:33

@Bluntness100

Ah pleased she won, she came across really well.

I think this years show was just a lot of light hearted fun which is really what many folks wanted after a shit year.

We don’t always need ro see folks fighting or falling out.

This..lighthearted fun tv for three weeks..I wanted Jordan to win because I love listening to him on radio 1...but you know what? It actually doesn’t really matter..chill everyone 😊
Fontella · 04/12/2020 23:38

They all seemed like decent enough people.

I didn't feel strongly about any of them although I must admit to having a bit of a soft spot for Russell. I thought he came across really well in this series, and of course, there's that voice. Celebrities get famous for all kinds of reasons, and not all of them have talent, but in Russell's case it's pretty obvious.

After Russell went my votes switched to Vernon, but I must admit, at the last knockings I wish I'd voted for Jordan.

Just watching him absolutely trembling from head to toe in that last trial, you start to realise what fears he's overcome in these few weeks.

Having said that, Giovanna seems like an extremely nice person and I she, along with the rest of them have kept me thoroughly entertained through these surreal times we are living through.

jay55 · 05/12/2020 00:10

I liked that Gi won, because she didn't squeal and whimper and make a fuss during the trials. I liked there being a woman on tv, showing a bit of grit and resilience, just bloody getting on with it.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/12/2020 00:13

I can't believe the woman from Baby Club won. Go CBeebies lady!!

Quaagars · 05/12/2020 00:18

I can't believe the woman from Baby Club won. Go CBeebies lady!!

I'd never heard of her before I'm A Celeb and thought she was a bit "meh" - as in didn't do much, didn't really see anything of her.
Seemed nice enough person though.
Your comment sounds a bit belittling, sure she's a bit more than just a CBeebies lady Hmm
And anyway, even if she is there's nothing wrong with that, you make it sound like a pat on the head type looky down on thing!

Quaagars · 05/12/2020 00:19

Unless I've read you wrong, and it was a compliment, tone never comes across well on the internet lol

SleepingStandingUp · 05/12/2020 00:28

Yeah it wasn't belittling, that's who she is to mem. She's the Baby Club lady on CBeebies. If it was say someone I watched in Holby of have written go Holby Dr! It's only belittling if you think there's something belittling about doing a show on CBeebies

SleepingStandingUp · 05/12/2020 00:30

As for the pat on the head, I'm just happy the person who won it isn't someone massively famous or "cool", she presents a kids show where she plays with Teddy and sings songs. So she likely didn't win because she was the popular vote going in, but because she won over the audience.

showmethegin · 05/12/2020 00:50

I find it mad that a lot of people on Mumsnet spend their time, quite rightly, discussing motherhood and how difficult and challenging it is, and more importantly how it is massively undervalued as a society the role is but then spend their time being quite aggressive about how Gi is "a mum, oh wow!, or "only people who like her are brain dead mummy people" or words to that effect.

A lot of people like her because she is normal. She doesn't go on social media with her hair perfect and a full face of make up like some influencers do. And a lot of people really like her because they can relate. She wrote for magazines before she achieved the level in her career (or fame) she has now, which is millions of people listening to her podcasts, buying her books and watching her stuff on CBBC.

It's ok if people don't like her, of course it is but there is no need to denigrate people who think she's pretty sound.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 05/12/2020 00:51

But that's the whole point she can't possibly have won over the audience watching I'm a celeb because we didn't see her do anything much of interest to warrant her being voted over others in there who were far more interesting characters.

She literally did nothing much of consequence which can only mean her votes were by those who were already following her on social media.

showmethegin · 05/12/2020 00:57

But that's always the case. Everyone has something that draws them to a contestant. And different people will like some people but dislike others. I personally though Shane was a bit annoying, felt he was performing all the time but that doesn't mean that people that liked him were wrong, just different.

Shane probably had loads of Eastenders people voting for him for example.

showmethegin · 05/12/2020 00:58

Some people don't like drama so respected the way nothing seemed to phase G. She did a few trials and was cool as a cucumber which a lot of people find impressive, myself included.

tobee · 05/12/2020 01:15

"Shane probably had loads of Eastenders people voting for him for example."

I wouldn't count on it! Grin

showmethegin · 05/12/2020 01:19

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2020 06:48

Omg people are still squabbling that gi won

Might help their career

It’s not like they get a million pounds

Just a flower leaf hat and cane 😂😂

MaggieFS · 05/12/2020 07:14

Well she got my votes for exactly that reason! She didn't need to be the centre of attention. She was kind. She put others first. She displayed a heap of admirable qualities and I wanted her to win.

Why is it so hard to believe?

peboh · 05/12/2020 07:27

The funniest thing is, this thread is the only place I've seen anybody commenting badly about Giovanni winning. It's funny that a place called 'Mumsnet' is the place that has a problem with her being a mum, being a kid human. But I suppose it's so dramatic over here that anybody who isn't willing to get into arguments can't possibly be entertaining in their own little way.

peboh · 05/12/2020 07:28

Kind* human. Bloody hell 🤦🏻‍♀️

ElfDragon · 05/12/2020 07:32

Same here, MaggieFS.

Before the series, I was vaguely aware of who Gi was. My dc love Tom Fletcher’s books, and I knew she was married to him, and that she had done some stuff that didn’t interest me - we’ve only watched selected CBeebies stuff for years, so I hadn’t seen her on there.

From her best bits clips, there was loads of stuff she did that didn’t get screen time (same for a number of others - AJ was slated for being boring and not doing any of the dancing he is famous for, but in many of the best bits clips he is shown being interrupted teaching various bits of dances - but this was never shown in the main show).

Gi was shown as being competent (got stuck in with the cooking and usually did it well), helpful and comforting, and unbelievably strong during the tasks she did. No complaining about grotty jobs (Shane repeatedly said he’d hate to clear out the toilets - happy to use them and let others clear up after him though), just calm, supportive and overall nice.

That is something to celebrate. There should be more people celebrated for being good people, rather than drama queens, or edgy, or ‘reformed’ characters. Out of the final 3, I wanted Gi to win because I hated the childish side of Jordan (although he did really well at confronting his fears), and I don’t like ‘redemption’ arcs - it feels manipulative to me. Whilst Vernon did actually come across as really nice, and surprised me as I previously thought he was a total arse, I’d rather, given the chance as I was with the final line up, support someone without the questionable mistakes in their past.

I also noticed that when Gi just got on and did a task it was ‘boring’, ‘not what I watch for’, etc, but when Vernon smashed it with cyclone - arguably the only task where it is totally enjoyable to see them fail (since there is a lot of discomfort in enjoying them fail with the eating/critters tasks), it wasn’t slated as boring, he was just (again) praised for doing it so well. Men do it well without complaining = great, what a hero. Women do it well without complaining = boring, what’s the point of watching 🙄🤔

Bluntness100 · 05/12/2020 07:36

Yes I’m surprised at the comments on Giovanna. Some women like to put other women down. And to be getting so het up about it. It’s quite unbelievable.
